I 7 Claims. (Glaze- 95) This invention relates to conveyers which may be used for conveying containers to filling means,
and my object is to devise simple apparatus of this character which operates smoothly and quietly with a minimum of power, and which facilitates the replacement of fresh containers for those filled.
I attain my object by providing an endless conveyer having one portion thereof moving at a predetermined speed while the opposite portion moves intermittently orat varying speeds or in different directions.

I is a frame or plate having anti-friction rollers 2 for running on a bed 3 of a packaging or filling .vided with a depending bracket II on which is journalled an anti-friction roller I2. On the I hub I is secured a spiral gear or Worm wheel I3 having a pitch diameter equal to the pitch diameter of the sprocket 4. l v
- Slots I4, I5 are formed 'in' the bed 3 to guide are reciprocated by the cam., The spindle I8 is driven by bevel gearing from theshaft I6. Any suitable means such a an electric motor (not shown) may be employedto drive the shaft I6 continuously. The length of the spiral pinion I9 is such that the spiral gear I3, when moved with the frame I will-not be moved out of engagement therewith. v n
With the above construction having the pitch diameters of the spiral gear or worm wheel l3 and the sprocket 4 identical, the velocity of the portion of the chain 6 at the near side A of the frame I is always equal to the axial pitch speed of the worm and the said near portion ofthe chain moves in the same direction as that of the helix or helices of the worm,
"Assuming theworm I9 is stationary and the frame I, with the stud 9 carried thereby, s moved to the right or left, the portion of the chain at th near side A of th frame would remain stationary (as the worm is stationary) and the other portion of the chain at the rear side B of the frame would move in the same direction as-the frame and stud but at twice the speed of the frame and stud'became the worm wheel I3 rolls along the worm I9.

the hubs I and 8,,thesprockets 4 and 5, and the spiral gear or worm wheel I3, longitudinally on the bed -3. On the bed 'is suitably journalled a spindle I8 which carries a'spiral pinion or worm I9 which is meshed with the spiral gear or worm wheel I3 to drive the sprocket 4 while the frame I and the above mentioned parts carried thereby Assuming the frame I and stud 9 are stationary and the worm I9 is, rotated, the speed of the portion of the chain at the rear side B of the frame is equal'to that portion of the chain at the near side A .of the frame, but in the opposite direction.
From the above it follows that if the worm I9 is, rotated and the frame I and stud Brare moved to therightor left, the velocity of the portion oftheichain Eat the rear'side B of the frame is the algebraic sum of the velocity caused by the worm I9 and th velocity, caused by the move- 'ment of the frame I; In the following example all velocities to the left are termed fplus and those to the right are termed minus. Emampl'e.-Assuming the frame I and thus the studs 9 and Ill carried thereby are stationary and that the worm I9 causes a-velocity of plus two feet per second on therear portionrof the chain whereby the rear portion of the chain "would.
travel at four feet per second. Since the cam l1 continuously reciprocates the frame I and stud 9, the portion of the chain at the rear side B of the frame I is alternately stopped and speeded up relative to the constant speed of the portion of the chain at the near side A of the frame.
In other, words the. speed of theportion of the chain at the man side of the frameil always; equals the axial pitch speed of the worm and therefore is moved continuously at a constant. speed while the speed of the portion of the chain at the rear side B of the frame ismovadfit vary ing speeds.

Mechanism of the class described comprising filling means; means for advancing containers to the filling means, the said advancing means including, a reciprocable frame and an endless flexible member rotatabl y supported on said frame; means for reciprocating said frame; and continuously operated means for driving said member while the frame is being reciprocated The conveying mechanism is particularly adapted for use with a maqhine for fillipgfiooth paste or shaving cream tubes which are carried by pockets 2| secured to certain of the links-of the chain 6,.
