2 Claims. (our-55) This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in drill press attachments and more particularly to safety-device for drill presses or other machinery having an adjustable table or work plate and has for its principal object the provision of an improved. construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture.
While I have illustrated my improved safety device in association with a drill press it is to be understood that the same may be used with other having a work table. In drill presses of the type shown the work table is usually adjustable longitudinally with respect to a vertical column and secured thereto by a wedge screw. It is not infrequently that this screw, by reason of vibration, becomes loose and as a consequence the table gradually works itself down with respect to the column. Also it has been known that serious accidents have resulted because of dropping of the table by accident or careless workmen. It is therefore one of the salient objects of this invention to provide an attachment for a drill press in the form of a safety device which will function to prevent the accidental movement or dropping of the work table and one which will effectively hold the same against slippage due to shaking or vibrations.

The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:

The drawing illustrates the preferred form of construction of. my invention.
The usual and conventional drill press cludes a work table l carried by a sleeve I I. sleeve H is movably mounted upon a column 12. This column l2 carries the operating mechanism including the driving motor l3 and the driver chuck l4 carrying the drill IS.
The sleeve H is usually secured in an adjusted position by a wedge screw l6 of the conventional construction including the operating handle I1.

The collar section 20 is provided with a handle 23. Mounted on this handle 23 is a block 24. The forward end portion 25 of the block 24 is provided with a bor 26 terminating into a reduced bore 21 formed in the rearward portion of the Mounted in the bore 26 is a bolt 28 having a flat surface portion 29 to provide a stop shoulder 30 adapted to bexengaged by stop pin 3| carried by the block.
The bolt 28 is freely mounted in the ,bore 26 and is urged outwardly by a spring 32 mounted in the bore 21. This arrangement is such that when there is no weight upon the collar the bolt 28 being projected against the column l2 will hold the collar in position upon the column. This permits the operator to adjust the tabl l0 without fear of the collar l8 dropping.
When the weight of the work table I0 is disposed upon the collar through the sleeve H and the collar is in effect wedged upon the column l2 and therefore securely holds the work table in place. f
From the above it is apparent that the construction of this invention is and highly efficient in use.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable 'of. variation and modification w'thout departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited tothe precise details of set forth, but desire to avail of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A safety device for a machine having a column, a sleeve adjustable on the column, and a table carried by the sleeve, comprising collar embracing the column with a portion engageable by the sleeve to effect wedging of the collar against the column by collar under the means for releasposition upon the weight is imposed upon the comprising a bolt carried by weight of the sleeve and table, ably holding the collar in a column when no block 24.
