Y., 'assignon by mesne assignments, to Weco Products Company, Chicago, Ill.,V a corporation of Illinois Application March 29, 1943, Serial No. 480,943
This invention relates to improvements in a snood or fascinator, although theinvention may have other uses and purposes as will belapparent to one skilled in the art.
In the past, many and various types of snoods, fascinators, and the like have been developed, but these formerly known deviceswere too frequently impractical, diflicult to put on, Wear, or remove without damage to a coiffure, would not perform any but a solely decorative function, could not be wom with a desired degree of universality so as to be adaptable for use with various types of Costumes, and Were objectionably expensive.
With the foregoing in mind, it is `an important object of the instant invention to provide a snood or the like capable of not only functioning as a decorative adjunct or accessory to other apparel, but also being cap-able of functioning in the manner of a, hair net preventing wisps or strands of hair straying Without the confines of the snood in an unsightly manner.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a snood or the like arranged for attachment to the head of a user in any of numerous different positions so that the snood ray be used as a proper adjunct or accessory to various types of apparel.
Also an object of this invention is the provision of a snood or fascinator which carries its own anchoring means and which is so arranged that the anchoring means may be associated With substantially any desirable part of the device itself.
A further feature of the invention resides in the provision of a snood or fascinator arranged for attachment to the head over substantially any type or style of coiffure, and Which may be put on, worn, or taken off Without damage to the coiifure. v
It is also a feature of the invention to provide a snood or fascinator so constructed as to be readily reversible and adjustable to fit substantially any size head and to intim-ately enclose any desired portion of substantially any type of coiffure. f
A further object of the invention resides `in the provision of a snod or fascinator made of open-Work material, carrying. a fastening element, and of such shape aslto define certain prominent locations readily susceptible for engagement with the fastening element, all in a manner to adapt the snood or fascinator for attractive disposition upon the head ina multitude of different positions.
While some of the more salient feaures, characteristics and advantages of the instant invention have been above pointed out, others will 'become apparent from the following disclosures,
taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in Which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a snood or fascinator embodying principles of the instant invention;
Fgure :2 is a diagrammatic view illu'strating i the use of the snood or fascinator of Figure 1 on the head of a Wearer; and v Figure 3 is another diagrammatic viewillustrating the use of the snood Vor fascinator n a different position on thelheacl of -a wearer. As shown on the drawings: y With reference to l'i'gure 1, it Will be seen that the illustrated embodiment of this invention comprises a snood or fascinator whichis preferably in the form of a single substantially flat sheet 5 of open-Work, Which may be made of any suitable or desirable material. The material may be woven, knitted, crocheted, or made in any other desirable manner into an open-work pattern having numerous openings 6 thereinjas illustrated. It may, of course, be'desired to have a decorative design embroidered or formulated in some. other fashion in the intermediate part of the snood, or to have the intermediate part of the snood either solid' or Vof much finer open-work so that the openings Will be considerably Smaller, but in keeping With the instant invention it is desirable to have the snood completely bordered therearound by' an openincluding relatively large work arrangement openings.
Along one side of the snood a border 'I isprovided, which is preferably integral with the fabric forming the remainder of the snood. This border may be fashioned With openings of slightly less size, as indicated at 8, vthan the remainder of the snood i-f so desired, so that the border will have greater durability. Near one end thereof the border is preferably provided With -asuitable securing element which may be in the form of a button 9. At the other end thereof a buttonhole l is preferably worked in the border through which the button 9 may be anchored to hold the snood in position on the head of a wearer. It will be appreciated of course, that the button 9 may likewise be anchored through any of the openings or interstices 8 in the borderl 1. This feature, coupled with the fact that the border is stretchable by virtue of the way the fabric is cut or formed, enables the user to positively and securely anchor the snood to the head.
One of the main features of the instant invention resides in the fact that the snood may'be adjusted, shaped, or arranged in substantially any manner to fit the head in any desirable position and enclose at least a portion of substantially any type of coiffure. Such adaptability of the snood results in part from the fact` that the button 9 'may be engaged through any of the openings 6 in the fabric of the snood, and particularly through any of the openings bordering the snood. This adaptability vof the snood is also augmented by the general shape of the article Whichis'prefer'ably substantially irregular so as to define certain prominent points as indicated at Il and l2;
The openings in the fabric in the.
hair and eiectively retains the hair in place without damage to'the coiifure.
It is obviousthat a combination of the showings in Figure 2 and 3, with 'the band 1 brought over the headv behind the'p'ompadour'and secured Vat the back beneaththe neck roll and other openregion of these points may be readily engaged with the button 9 and the snood will still retain f and various arrangements of the snood or fascian attractive and decorative configuration when on the head.
' Usually, the button 9 will be engaged through..
one or more openings in the border of the snood. Frequently these openings will Vinclude .the buttonhole Ill and one or more of the openings emphasized for the purpose of clarity in Figure '1 and indicated by reference numerals L3, I4, 15 and IG. For example, a pouch-like arrangement may be made by engaging the button`9 through the buttonhole lIl] and 'the openings |3 and 16', permitting the remainder lof the snood -to hang from the head in agraceful manner, or tucking vit under the hair, as may be deemed most expedient or pleasing to the individual user.
It will be understood, `however, that while .the openings ID, I3, 14, I5 and .Hi may be most utilized with the button A9, lthe button 'may be engaged through any opening in the snood, 'thus permitting substantiallynany desirable arrangement of the article. The flexibility of the snood and the fact that it is stretchable vin substantially any direction aid materially in the proper fitting of the snood to the head and the proper shaping of it over a portion lof a coiiure, and the lproper adjusting of it to a desired degree 'of tightness,-so that it may not only function as -a decorative accessory to the other apparel of the wearer, but Will perform the additional function of retaining the hair in place in the manner of a hair net. y
VIn Figure 2.1 have illustrated onemanner in Which the 'snood or fascinator may be worn, v'for example, With a sports costume. In this instance, the coiiure embodies a pompadour,fgenerally indicated by numeral l, :and the band 'l of the snood is brought'over the top-of -the'head behind the pompadour, downwardly over `each babushka, but by virtue of its 'general:construct-.-V tion and shape giving a neaterjand more-,iat-
tractive appearance vthan is possiblewith a babushka. f
In .the arrangementillustrated .in Figure 3,-the snood .is worn in somewhat the manner'of afsoft tam-o'-shanter. -In this instance, lthe coifiure includes a high pomp roll,.generallyvindicated by numeral 19, and a loW-hangingfneckroll,-;generally -indicated by -numeral l211,;and -all of'ithe hair is aenclosed -by Vthe snood. The band 1=`| is brought over the forehead, downwardly atfeach side of the head over'orgjustl in lfrontiof 'the Years; and secured by anchoringthe =button 1:9 through the buttonhole .IO at the-back beneath the neck roll. Certain'of -the openings 1-3, -|;4, .and l'fi supplemented by certain-of 'the other openings 6 around the border of the Aarticle, if necessary, may lkewise be vengaged over -thebuttont v:to
lprovide'thepouch-like arrangement. The other tumes.
ings in the snood engaged vover the button if defsired,y may be had With equal facility. Other lnator may be made in keeping with the other ap- Such a aptl provided a snood, fascinator, :or similar article of apparel which is simple in construction, v'may :be made in any desirable colorv and provided with any desirable ornamental formations or embellishments, may vreadily be applied to the head in any of numerous positions and vover substantially any type or style of coiffure, andfso it is adaptable for Wearing with various :different types of cos- 'F'urther, it will 'be `noted Vthat the article mayfunction .to hold the hair 4in position in the manner of` a hair net as vWell as functioning as a decorative adjunct to the other apparel ofthe user, the article being so made and arranged'as to lbe applioable to the head AWithsubstantially any desired degree of tightness. It Will also 'be appreciated that .the article is economical vto manufacture in a durablerandlasting quality.
-It Will,I of course, be understood that .various details of construction may be varied through a Wide range Without departing from the princples of this invention, .and it is, therefore, not the purpose to tlimit the patent granted hereon otherw'ise than necessitated by thescope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A snood including asubstantially fiat openv Work piece of material of irregularishape, and an anchoring element carried by said -piece of vmaterial and lockingly engageable through any Vof the openings in said material.
2.\A snood including a fabric 'open-work, a border along one sidethereof having van opening adjacent an end thereof, and a securing element adja'cent the other `end of said border 'lockingly engageable in said opening and any of .the *openings in the fabric to permit shapng yof.. the snood to the head in .any of a plurality of different arrangements. e 7 v v 7 3. A snood including a substantially .flatfopenwork sheet. an integral `border along one side'of said sheet having openinlgs ofllesser size thanthe remainder of said sheet, and a seouringelement carried by said lborder and lockinglyrenga'geable in any of the vborder -openings as Well as any of the openingsin vthev remainder of the sheet.
