My invention relates to improvements in printing presses, particularly bed and platen presses of the Gordon type in which both platen and bed are rocked forth and back to and from impression position.
An object of the present invention is toprovide a press of the Gordon type having embodied therein simple, durable and inexpensive means interposed between the bed and platen structures and serving efficiently to prevent racking play between the press parts through which the rocking of said bed and platen structures is effected.
Other objects of the invention reside in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter illustrated and/or described.

Referring to the drawings, wherein similar parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several views, it will be seen that the illustrated press includes side frames ll] connected by cross stays II. A power shaft l2 journaled in said side frames Ill carries a fly wheel I3 at one end thereof and keyed to said power shaft I2 is a pinion [4, which meshes with a cam-gear wheel l5 fixed to a main shaft [6 journaled in the side frames I0. Trunnioned in said side frames in is a platen rocker l1 carrying a platen l8. Secured to a trunnion l9 of said arm 20 serves to oscillate said platenrocker ll 1 and the platen l8 carried thereby. Back of the side frame Hlis a bed 23 having a form-receiving recess 24 thereinand having legs 25 pivoted on a bed shaft 26. mounted at its ends in the lower rear portions of the side frames I0. J ournaled in ears 21 projecting rearwardly from the bed 23 is a back shaft 28 to the ends of which are connected side arms 29, 30, side arm 29 being also connected with a crank wheel 3i on the main shaft l6, and side arm 30 being also connected with the cam-gear wheel I5 on said main shaft I6, Power applied tothe power shaft l2, as
through a pulley thereon (not shown) causes the platen l8 to tip back and forth from open position (Fig. 2) to closed impression position and causes a relatives movement of the bed 23, bringing a form therein againstthe platen I8 in its impression position and substantially retractingfthe bed 23 from the platen l8 in the open position of said platen.
The inside-outside cam 22 of the cam-gear wheel I5 has a way 32 for the cam roller 2| on the cam arm 20, said way 32 being formed between an inside cam wall 33 and an outside cam wall 34. Corresponding with the conventional operation of a press of the instant nature, the cam roller 2| occupies a position within the reach 35 of the cam way 32 at its high side, when the platen I8 is disposed in its open position (Fig. 2) and while said cam roller 2| occupies a position within the reach 36 of said cam way 32 at the lower side thereof, the platen i8 is closed in impression position. Operating as in the ordinary following the reach 38 of said cam way 32, would ride the inside cam wall 33, breaking the impression and opening the platen rapidly. Thus operating as in the ordinary press, this reversal of movement of the heavy platen l8 and platen rocker ll, coupled with the corresponding reversal of movementof the bed 23 through the side rods 29, 30, would be accompanied with successively opposed stresses in the bearings of the back shaft 28, side rods 29, 30, platen rocker ll,

Furthermore, the outside cam wall 34 along the reach 31 of the way 32 and the inside cam wall 33 along the reach 38 of said way would be battered and undulyworn by the cam roller 2!, especially after the occurrence of wear in said cam walls and roller. It is the main purpose of myinvention to avoid such noisyand injurious racking of press parts and to minimize the wearing of the cam 22 and cam roller 2|. In carrying out my invention, lugs 44 re formed on the locking extension 39 at the rear thereof, one lug bein located at one side of the clearance slot 40 and one at the other side of said slot. Said rods '49, supported at their forward ends on the locking extension 39 of the platen rocker l1, have a rear support on the legs 25 of the bed 23, said rear support consisting of a rail "or cross tie 50 reaching from one of said 'legs to the other. This rail 50 has two spaced bores therein extending therethrough from front to back thereof and providing eyes '51, one for each of said rods 49, each eye slidably receiving the rear end portion of its respective rod 49 and being flared outwardlyv both to 'tlie front and to the rear, as at 52, 53 (Fig. 5) to admit of relative tilting movements between the rod 49 and rail 50 without undue looseness of the rod within the eye. The front face of the upper portion of the rail f5"'0 is beveled, as at 54, from a line intersecting the axe of the eyes 5| to the upper edge fof said rail. springs 56 are thereupon confined between thet then fixed collars and the abutment bosses 48 and are rendered ineffective. The rods 49 with the springs 56 :borne thereby and temporarily, abnormally compressed may be readily removed from the press with no interference thereto due to the presence of said springs on said rods.
In the operation of the press, the platen l8 and bed 23 rock toward and away from each other, but since the locking extension 39 and platen l8 are disposed at opposite sides of the jected only to a limited lengthening and shortening thereof, exert a substantially uniform strong pressure against the locking extension 39 of the platen rocker l'l. Thereby, the cam roller 2| is caused constantly to ride the inside cam wall 33 of cam-gear 22 eliminating all noise and injury caused by the usual battering of inside and outside cam walls by a cam roller shifting from one cam wall to the other. Other battering and noises in important bearings in the press structure are likewise folestalled, notably in the bearings of the back shaft '28, side rods 29, 3'0, platen rocker Ii, and main shaft It. The outside cam wall 34 function chiefly as a safety member.
My invention is highly advantageous in use. The springs 56 require virtually no attention. Being flexed but slightly, they are extremely durable and they are readily installed and removed. The improved press runs quietly and efficiently long after the wearing of parts, which ordinarily would necessitate repair or replacement. Furthermore, the improved press operates efiiciently at higher than usual speeds, not only when the press is new, but after the parts become substantially worn, the desirability 'for platen presses of relatively high speeds being in complete lack of slurring between the impression form and platen upon the making and breaking of the impression, which desirable condition obtains even after substantial wearing of the cam roller 2 l and other press parts.
Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the-scope of what is claimed without departing from the spiritofimy invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as'new and desire to'protect'by Letters Patent is:
1. "A press including a frame, an oscillatory platen r'ocker mounted'on said frame and having an extension at one side thereof, "a platen carried by said r'ock'e'r at the side thereof opposite said extensioma rockable bed having supporting legs therefor pivotally mounted on said frame, a power shaft'and a m'ainsh'aft revolu'ble in theframe, a cam-gear anda crank wheel fixed to said main shaft at opposite sides of said frame, said camge'ar being driven from said power-"shaft, aback shaft-on the bed, side arms connectingsaid carngear and crank-wheel withsa-id back-shaft, a cam arm on the platen rocker, a cam roller on'said arm, said cam-gear having a cam cooperating through said cam arm and side arms oppositely to tilt the platen and bed back and forth from open to closed relationship, the movement of the rocker extension being generally in the same direction as that of said bed, a pair of abutments pivoted to the back of the rocker extension in horizontal opposition relative to the center thereof, each of said pivoted abutments having a companion abutment on its corresponding bed supporting leg and further having a guide rod issuing therefrom and slidably supported at the extremity thereof by such companion abutment, compression springs encircling said guide rods, each spring being interposed under compression between its respective abutments, said springs acting through said bed and platen rocker yieldingly to hold said cam roller against its said cam and acting further yieldingly to prevent lateral shifting of said platen rocker, back shaft, side arms, and main shaft in their respective bearings.
2. A press including a frame, an oscillatory in said frame revolu-bly supporting said cam wheel, means for driving the cam wheel, a back shaft on the bed, a side arm connecting said back shaft with said cam-gear, a cam arm on the platen rocker having a cam roller thereon coact-' ing with said cam, said platen and bed being rocked throughsaid cam arm and side arms oppositely to tilt the bed and platen back and forth from open to closed relationship, the movement of the rocker extension being generally in the same direction as that of said bed, an abutment pivoted to the back of the rocker extension and having a companion abutment carried by a leg platen rocker mounted on said frame and having an extension at one side thereof, a platen carried by said rocker at the side thereof opposite said extension, a rockabl bed having supporting legs therefor pivotally mounted on said frame, a cam wheel having a cam thereon, a main shaft of the platen, said pivoted abutment having a guide rod issuing therefrom and slidably supported at the extremity thereof by such companion abutment, a compression spring encircling said guide rod and interposed under compression between said abutments, said spring acting between said bed and platen-rocker yieldingly to hold said cam roller against its said cam and acting further yieldingly to prevent lateral shifting of said platen rocker, back shaft, side arm and main shaft in their respective bearings.
