ADJUSTING DEVICE FOR MOTOR BRACKETS Filed Oct. 18, 1943 I INVENTOR. ROBERT A; JOHNSTONE.
Patented Jan. 30, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ADJUSTING DEVICE FOR Moron BRACKETS Robert A. J ohnstone, Cincinnati, Ohio Application October 18, 1943, Serial No. 506,684'
1 Claim. (01. 74-44214) This invention relates to a device for adjusting a bracket arranged to support an electric motor. 1 I v Motor-driven machines usually have the power imparted to them through a belt drive. My invention contemplates means for quickly and accurately tightening the tension on the belts as they wear or stretch.
The object of my invention is to provide a movable motor support bearing against a cam.
A further object is to provide a ratchet and pawl with the cam to maintain the cam in adjusted position.
A still further object is to provide means for rotating the cam and means to release the ratchet.
My invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claim and from the drawing, in which latter:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken in the plane of the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a detail section, taken in the plane of the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the exemplification shown in the drawing, the supporting structure II is mounted on a column support [2 of a drill press. The motor support l3 comprises a-pair of right angle plates 14 and I5 welded together. The plate [4 has a pair of elongated holes l6 for receptionof cap screws I! which are threaded into the, supporting structure H for clamping the plate in adjusted position. A motor I8 is attachable to the plate l5.
The upper face of the structure H is provided with a recess [9 in which a disc 20 is receivedand is rotatable on a stud 2|. An eccentric disc22 is integral with the disc 20 and has a handle 23 attached thereto to provide means for rotating the discs. A portion of the face of the'disc 20 is provided with ratchet teeth 24 arranged to .*be engaged by a tooth 25' on a spring pressed plunger 26. A threaded guide bushing '21 is threaded into the support and forms a guide for the plunger 26. A spring 28 normally urges the plunger into engagement with the ratchet teeth. A'handle 29 is provided to withdraw the plunger from engagement with the ratchet teeth.
. With the device in the position shown in Fig. l, the belt 30 canbe tightened by a movement of the handle in a clock-wise direction or the tension released by a movement of the handle in an anti-clock-wise direction. When turning the handle in an anti-clockwise direction, the plunger handle 29 is, pulled out to permit the eccentric and ratchet wheel to revolve in its guide. Upon making adjustments the cap screws I! are loosened to permit the motor support plate to be moved forward or backward. After adjustment the cap screws are tightened to hold the plate in place against the cam 22.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have devised a simple adjustable motor support wherein the belt can be readily and easily adjusted.
Having thus fully described my. invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
An adjusting device for a motor support, oom-.
prising a support, a motor mounting plate slidable'in a straight line on said support, a ratchet. wheel rotatable on said support, an eccentric on said ratchet wheel engaging the end of said plate, a pull pin engaging said ratchet wheel, a handle for rotating said ratchet wheel and eccentric and cap screws extending through elongated holes in said plate and threaded into said support for clamping said plate to said support.
