- The arm 1 is pinned in such a way as to allow template. While this construction'is for the most part satisfactory, sometimes it is not desirable to notch or slot the template and in such cases the clamp of the type described in the present inven tion is more useful. l
The type of clamps described in the present invention and that of my copending' application mentioned above are specifically 'usedfor forming dies to templates and in this connection it will be noted that the template is clamped in a horizontal position and the die element in a vertical position at the edges of thetemplate: Further, in the present type of clamp, the template must be accurately held to the cutting die, and
must/be sufficiently yet the clamp for this purpose small so as not to interfere with the operator in forming the die with the forming machine. The clamps therefore of the present invention have these distinct purposes and special uses over other clamps for other types of work.
Further advantages and merits of the present invention will be more fully explained and under'stood from the specification below illustrating an embodiment of the invention in connection with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows an elevation of the clamp with the template in section.
Figure 2-shows the clamp in elevation with one portion thereof in section.
Figure 3 shows a plan view of the invention as viewed from the top of Figure 1, and,
Figure 4 shows an exploded perspective view with parts in the approximate position in which they are assembled.
Referring to the figures in which the same elements are indicated by the same numbers, the clamp comprises, a base plate I, and angle plate 2, and a top clamping screw 3. The base plate I is provided with two clamping surfaces 4, the top horizontal clamping surface as viewed in Figure 1, and 5, the side vertical surface as viewed of the plate I the clamp 2. The pin toclamp the die strip the base clamp platell to pivot freely to the angle plate 2. The angle plate 2 has two arms, one, i I, the horizontal arm as shown in Figure l in which the arm 1 is pivoted, and I2, the vertical arm, which extends opposite to the face 5.

The pin at one face of the arm 2 is provided with a supporting bracket l3 from which there extends a second pin element 18. This pin element l8 when in place passes through the hole [9 in the plate H at or nearthe corner of the arm 12. This whole assembly of the pin it], the bracket 13 and the pin I8 is, permanently assembled in position in the bracket arm 2, so that while it may be pushed transversely back and forth in the arm II, it will remain located in the holes byyirtue of the enlarged head 20 at the end of the pin l8. When the head 20 is pushed against the. arm II, the end of the pin I0 is clear of the slot 9 so that, in that position the base clamp 1 with the bar 1 may be disassembled from the top clamp plate 2. This construction permits the template M to be removed from the clamp and a new template inserted. Each template M, before it is used with the slot l5 which is removed from the edge 2| of the material of the template so that the edge of the template is, smooth and continuous. The horizontal surface of the base plate 4 is used ,to clamp the template, while the vertical surface 5 is used 22. When the device is assembled for use, the template 14 which has already been pierced with the slot 15 is'put in i1 and L9 clamp, is pierced with the place between the clamping surface 4 and the top clamping arm ll through which the screw 3 passes holding the template I 4 against the clamping surface 4. Before the screw 3 is tightened, the die strip 22 is put in place along the edge of the template and the whole assembly with the template and the die strip is held together by means of the clamping screw 3. The template l4 may be provided With a number of slots l5 near its edge in the position indicated in Figure may be changed if the template is very large or if it has a great number of sharp bends. In many cases however the die strip can be formed to the template without changing the position of the clamping plate during the operation.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
1. A clamp for forming a die strip to a template form, comprising two clamping elements of which one is an L shaped clamping head, providing pairs of opposed clamping surfaces positioned substantially at right angles to each other, one of said clamping elements having a bar member projecting from one of its surfaces, the bar bein located in spaced relationship to the edge of said surface and extending into a slot in the other of said elements and means pivoting said bar in said slot comprising an adjustable U shaped connecting member having its side element extending in apertures in said L shaped clamping head, said apertures being substantially parallel to said clamping surfaces with one side of the U shaped elements extending through said slot and said bar and the other at the junction of the arms of the L shaped clamping head, said U shaped element being adjustably mounted so that it can be withdrawn from said slot to permit the elements to be separated one from the other.
2. A clamp for forming a die strip to a template form, having a perforation therethrough, comprising a base element and an angle element, having an arm with a slot therein, a bar projecting from one surface of the base element, said bar being located in spaced relationship to the edges of said surface and extending through the perforation in the template and into the slot in said arm of the angle element, and means pivoting the bar in the arm of said angle element comprising an adjustable U shaped and pivoting member having its side element extending in apertures in said angle elements with one side of said U shaped element extending through said slot and said bar and the other side extending through said angle element near the junction of the angle, said U shaped element being adjustably mounted so that it can be withdrawn from said slot to permit the elements to be separated one from the other.
