FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,632,

dated January 11, 1881.

Application filed August 7, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS ROGERS, of Millersburg, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, .reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ofthis specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of an end view of my improved fence, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.

This invention has relation to improvements in fences; and it consists in a fence constructed substantially as hereinafter fully shown and described.

In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a panel of my improved fence, composed of the rails a, united together by the wires b and supported by the oblique stakes c. The unitingwires 1) are first looped around the lower rail, a, twisted a sufficient number of times, looped again atd around the second rail, again twisted, and so on until all the rails are secured together; hence, if the panels be supported from the top rails, thelower ones are suspended therefrom vertically. The stakes o are arranged on each side of the fence,- at proper intervals, and in line with each other. They rest at their lower ends upon the surface of the ground, and their converged upper ends bear against the top rail of the panel. are deeply notched at t for the reception of the binding-wires e, which are passed around the said stakes in the notches, under the top rail of the panels, and their ends tightly twisted together. These stakes bear upon the upper panels, where the upper loops of wires, 1), engage said panels, and as the binding-wires e are applied, the said loops are forced into the wood of the stakes. Thus these wires are held fast and all movement of them is prevented, by which construction a short joint only need be made in the panels, thus rendering them stronger, and there is no danger of the loops slipping past th e joints and allowingthe panels They to separate. At the same time the stakes are prevented from slipping sidewise. The lower ends of the stakes are then spread apart.

To prevent the panels from swaying they are stayed to the stakes by means of the wires f, which are looped around the wires Z) and the stakes, as indicated atg and 9. At such points as the rails a lap each other the lapped ends are included in the loops of wires 1).

A fence thus constructed is in contact with the ground at no point except the ends of the stakes, and is not liable to rot at this part, not being buried in the ground, the weight of the panel and the relative position of the stakes being relied on wholly to keep the fence upright.

I am aware that a fence has been made in which the panels are held by looped wires, and that the stakes crossed at tops brace said fence where the wires are placed, and I do not claim such, broadly; but in such construction the tops of the wires are looped around the stakes and the top panels, and it the stakes should give sidewise, the leverage would strain the wires and cause them to brealqwhereas in my construction the stakes bearing against the wires and squeezing them against the panels would be prevented from such side slip, and would not strain the wires.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A fence consisting of the rails a, the looped wires I), uniting said rails, the diverging stakes 0, having their upper ends bearing against the ends ofthe top panels and binding the upper loops of wire, I), between and against said ends, the wires 0, passing around said stakes under the top rail, and the stay-wires looped around the wires 1) and stakes c, substantially as specified.
