Description
MACHINE FOR INTERFOLDING STRIPS I Filed Sept. 26, 1942 26 [Q I 27 26 O i v v IN V EN TOR. F/P'DER/ K R. SLA vs.
ATTORNEYS of the mechanism.
Patented Dec. 26,1944
application September 2 This invention relates tomachines for the production of doubled, re-enforced strips from thin,
fiexible, tape-like, material, with particular, reference to Cellophane. 1 t
1 Such strips, ,or strands, invarious colors, when braided or woven, form acceptable foundations for ornaments forwomens hats, and other millia new uses, being;. waterproof, permanent in colori .zation, easy of application :and moderate in cost .of production. l
910 ltisaniobject of therinvention to prolvide a ,mechanism which, progressively, places a, relatively narrow lining. or re-enforcing strip of dense material, as paper, midway between the side edges of the fCellophane strip, foldsthe edges thereover. refolds the combined strips, supplies an adhesive, and presses the sides together to complete ,cohesionj A further feature'is in the provision of means for adjusting and maintaining the paperliner strip centrally of the Cellophane strip; acon- Idition that can be visually, ascertained during progress of the operation, the strip serving to prevent light'fromfpassing through the translucent 9 material infwhichlitis enclosed.
Another purpose is to provide a novel means to apply an adhesive to the inner surface of oneside tity required, so that afterseamingthe sides, no
excess adhesive appears, both edges being smooth' and uniform throughout.
6, 1942, Serial No. mean, 4 Claims. (01454- 1) fixedupright spindles [6, 11101. which reels t8,
[9 respectively, are revolvablymounted. i The reel l8carries a supply of..Cellophanef'or likethin, pliable material, 20, tape-like, in form,
having a glossy surface, preferably waterproof, in
i any preferre'dcolor and, translucent in its nature.
The reel .l9tis supplied with a liner strip 2|, of opaque, material, such as ,paper, oflesser width than. the strip '20., of the 1 same color and adapted to prevent penetration oflight therethrough when the productis complete.
The mechanism is,;.however, not limitedmerely to two strands, casing and liner, asobviouslya plurality of eithermay beemploye'd.
The strip .is provided with aguide 22 ad,-

of this disclosure, and in which: i r Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the folding elements in greater detail.

scale. i
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are similar sectional views taken on corresponding lines of Fig. 2.
Figure '7 is a perspective view showingin detail a portion of the combined strips 'as they are advanced through the folding, and adhering stages Figure 8 is a plan view of a piece of goods formed by braiding several of the strips together.
Referring to the drawing in detail, a bench,
generally designated I5, forms the foundation of the mechanism, which, as shown, comprises two drawn to an enlarged h ered, turn ed at aj slight angle an'dalso moved "lengthwise. i
This is'accomplished b reason ofa longitudinal slot 283m the controller shank, and a slot 29 in thebracket at a. right angle thereto, through which passes a clamp bolt 30,- whereby to retain the controller, togetheriwith the folder, in adjusted position. i
Spaced in advance ofwthe folder 24 is a final be positioned centrally of the casing strip, at the initial folding, see Fig. 7, which position is at tained by proper adjustment of the ccntroller;
another feature, also accomplished by the conf f 9 trailer, is that of spacing the folders sufficiently apart to permit a clear view of the relative positions of the casing and liner as they emerge from plane of the folders, has as a feeding means, a fibrous, brush-like wick 34 extendingdownwardly, 1
its end engaging in a slot 35 in one of the side walls of the final folder, in a manner to apply an even coating of the adhesive directly upon the inner surface of one side only, of the redoubled strip, just as it passes out.
The issuing strip enters between a pair of pressure rolls 3t, 3], relatively upper and'lower, by which the sides are closed and seamed, as at 38, in Figs. 2 and 7.
The upper roll 36 is fixed'on a shaft 39 extending transversely across the bench and driven by a pulley 40, over which is trained a belt from any convenient power source.
Alongsidethe pulley 40 is a smaller belt pulley 4|, driving a belt 42 trained over a sleeve pulley 43, frictionally engaged with a cone 44 fast upon a shaft 45; thus the shaft is frictionally, not positively, driven but may slip under excessive load.
The shaft 45 is mounted in bearings on the bench, parallel to the shaft 39, and has fixed upon it a drum 46; another similar drum Ill is mounted in bearings 48, 49 adjustable on the bench in such manner that the axes of these drums are at aslight angle; for thepurpose of spacing the finished stripv 38 as it is wound on the drums, after leaving the rolls 36, 31, so that the adhesive may be thoroughly dry and set.
Thereafter the strip is wound on a reel 50, fixed on a shaft having a pulley 52, driven by a belt 53 from a pulley 54, on the main drive shaft 39.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought to secure by Letters Patent, is: a

wick extending through the opening, means to sup-ply said wick with an adhesive, compression rolls to squeeze the united sides of the strip, and a pair of drums over which the finished strip is wound, one of said drums being frictionally driven, the other loose and its axis obliquely inclined to the driven drum whereby the combined strip is coiled in spaced convolutions under moderate tension.
4. In a machine for making a compound pli able strip of uniform width and thickness, comprising reels to supply individual casing and liner strips, said liner stri being of lesser width than the casing strip, an initial folder to turn the side edges of said casing strip over and upon the liner strip to encase the same, adjustable means for guiding the strips to said initial folder, a final folder to complete folding the side edges of said strip, means to adjust said initial folder relative to the final folder laterally, longitudinallyand angularly, wickmeans for coating one only of the inner surface of the side walls of the doubled strip just before extrusion from'said final folder, positively driven compression rolls to consolidate the side walls of the strip after emergence from said final folder, a friction driven drum and a
