,rec aims:@(ol; 197 :1 86) This invention relates ltortypewritingmmachines and, more particularlictolcomposite masking structures for such machinesgor portions thereof.
Although composite masks are wellknown in the art, their construction isusually such,,that it is :awkward or inconvenient to; removeornassemble the: component sections on the machine.
Also composite masksofteniare unstable in construction and invariably the componentmaskling sections. are held together: by exposed, unsightly fastening devices reducing, the;attractiveness and salabilityiofthe machine.
component'portions thereof,.are ,convenientlyxdisplaceable ,an'd/or removable togain access to certainmechanisms normally covered thereby.
,It is also an object of th invention to, provide an assembled mask which, although qnicklyvand conveniently assembled upon 1 the machine, will notrattle. l 1 i wAdditional ,cbjects ,and features of the novel maskstructure will becomeapparentfirom the drawing, particularly when the drawing is read in-thelight of the description and, the appended claims. wardly to form open pivot seats 36 normally resting on pivot studs or pins 31. These pins extend toward each other from the rear portions of the side covers l8, each pin being preferably supported on an ear 38 bent from one of the forked ears 26. From this it will be seen that the shroud 2| is pivotally displaceable about the said pivot studs 31, to and from masking position; or may be, if desired, entirely removed fromithe machine. Means are provided whereby in moving the shroud 2| to masking position, the covers or members I8 become firmly interlocked with the shroud in the direction in which the covers are moved from the carriage unless it is first moved rearwardly about the pivot studs 31.
To insure against accidental dislodgement of the mask assembly from the carriage, each car-' cannot be dislodged from-the pivot pins 21, 28,
I :as long as the shroud 2| is interlocked with the 1 side covers.
spaced. More specifically, each of the side covers |3 has, near its upper rear portion, a, .groove-' forming protuberance or ear 4| into which one of the inwardly extending rims 35 of the shroud When it is desired to remove either one or both of the side covers l8, the shroud 2| is first swung rearwardly and, if desired, removed. Either of 2| fits. It may besaid that the protuberances 4| and the rims 35 fitting therein constitute tongue-;-
and-groove joints. The ears 4| are so disposed and formed that the shroud 2| is movable to and from masking position. In some cases, it may be desirable to provide a tongue-and-groove in:- terlock along the entire adjoining edges of the composite masking members I8 and 2|.
Themeans by which the composite mask is held assembled upon the carriage will now be described. Upon each carriage end plate I2 is pivoted a rearwardly extending arm 42 having Strong springs 44 which areanchored on the end plates I? of the carriage, draw the arms downwardly. The ears 43 overlie tongues 45 reaching forwardly and upwardly from the shroud rims 35, and act thereupon to urge the shroud 2| forwardly as well asdownwardly. The result is that the shroud is seated and forced firmly onto the pins ,31 of the side covers l8 and against the bottom of the grooves in the'ears 4|, wherefore in turn the side covers are firmly seated on the pins,
' pivot studs 31. Stop lugs48 on the arms 42 are engageable with frame-projections 5| to limit downward movement of the arms when the tongues 45 clear the ears 43. As seen in Figures 1 and 3, the lugs 48 normally stand off the projections 5| so that normally the ears 43 bear effectively on the tongues 45. The front edges of the tongues 45 are so formed as to be capable of forcing the arms 42 upwardly when the shroud 2| is swung to masking position. As the shroud 2| nears masking position, the tongues pass in front of the ears 43. and draw the shroud forwardly and downwardly.
In the absence of an intermediate front masking member-,it is desirable to steady the front ends of the side covers I8. To this end, a rubber collar 52 may be interposed between each frame end l2 and adjacent side cover I8 while screws 53 passing through the covers and the collars may hold the side covers onto the frame ends |2.
In its ,masking position, the shroud 2| is blocked against upward movement by ledges 51 underlying the protuberances 4|, see Figures 3 the side covers, after loosening the screw 53, may then be swung outwardlyfree of the pin 54. The ears 25 and 25 being provided with open seats, allow then the removal of the outwardly swung cover from the machine.
In the aforementioned patent to Helmond No. 2,172,008, draw bolts 6'! are provided which form part of a platen lock-down device. Corresponding draw bolts are numbered 56, in the present drawing, and protrude normally from the op posite carriage ends |2 through clearance holes provided in the side covers I8. It will beobserved that the draw bolts remain on the carriage and that the side covers I8 are swung into position over them.
Figure 4 illustrates a slightly modified structure whereby a side cover |8 may be placed upon the carriage. ear 25 and the pin 21 have been omitted,- and the side cover is located on the carriage atits lower front by means of a pin 58 which projects from the carriage rail l3 into the side cover l8.
The carriage is shown to embody a paper table 6| which may be hingedly displaced for gaining access to adjustable margin stops 62.
While the form of the structure herein described is admirably adapted to fulfill the objects stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the form of embodiment herein described; for the invention obviously may take many forms, all comingwithin the purposes and scope of the present im-' provements.
