Description

Dec. 26, 1944, UNK 2,366,059
COLOS'I'OMY APPLIANCE Original Filed May 25, 1940 I Patented Dec. 26, 1 944;
2,366,059 COLOSTOMY APPLIANCE Fred A. Schunk, Lincoln, Park, N. J. Substituted for abandoned application Serial No. 337,130, May .25, 1 940. This application March 29, 1943, Serial No. 479,853
This invention relates to surgical appliances and more especially to a detachableapparatus forthe use of persons who have had a colostomy, or similar' abdominal operation, by reason of which the natural use of the colon is prevented from functioning as an evacuation outlet,
It is known that devices exist for the purpose of receiving excrement from openings in the body,
and it is als known that such appliances are worn only with great personal discomfort and pain, rapidly become foul with fecal matter, and are difficult, substantially impossible, to thoroughly cleanse to an inodorous, sterile condition. Having this matter in mind, it is anobject of l the invention to provide an appliance composed wholly ofnonabsorbent material, such as metal, glass, ceramics, hard plastics, etc., capable of being rendered aseptic, and entirely eliminating fibrous substances, rubber and similar porous material.
A further feature is in the provision of a colostomy apparatus designed tobe supported onthe body, in a balanced condition and deliver matter entered therein to a suitable place of disposal.
Another purpose is to produce an apparatus for this purpose having, in addition to a form fitting attachment flange, a hermetically scalable, op-
posed opening for the entrance of a douche, or
' other instrumentalities.
These and other important purposes, which will later appear, are accomplished bythe noveland practical construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, constituting a. material part of this disclosure, and in which:
t Figure 1 is a general perspective view showing a complete embodiment of the invention and indicating the manner of its application.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the apparatus. a
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the same. Figure 4 is a fragmentary view, similar to figure 3 but showing the shutter as opened.
Figure 5 is a, fragmentary longitudinal secconstruction. 3
Figure 6 is a similar sectional view of stopper to replace the plug.
tional view of a hollow removable plug used in Referring in further detail to the drawing, a
belt, designated by the numeral I5, is provided with a buckle l6 whereby it may be adjusted to the body of a person, as clearly indicated. a
, The belt or strap is connected at itsends to loops ll extending from opposite sides of a hollow head 2|] having opposed angular faces, one of which is provided with an annular flange 2| conformableto the surface of the body and to be applied in a manner to cover the surgically made aperture therein.
The opposite face is provided with a circular flange 22 and at its lower edge is a hinge 23 con necting a cover 24, having an outstanding, slightly bevelled, annular ledge 25 adapted to snugly engage within the interior margin of the flange 22 l to form an impervious joint when closed; a pull handle 26 is attached to the cover by a lug 21, and a snap catch 28, fixed to the head, is arranged to retain the cover when closed.
In addition, the cover has a centralopening covered hermetically tight by a transparent member 3D,.through which a view of the interior isobtainable. l a
Extending from the larger portions of the head 20 is a tube 32 of considerable diameter, bent midway its lengths to project, as at 33, and of,
such length as to extend alongsidethe lower limbs of the individual to a place of disposal.
At a point approximately at the junction of the tube 32 with the head 20, is a tubular projection 35 conically tapered within its outer end portion and adapted t be closed by a corresponding plug 36, having a knurled head 31 for convenience in operation.
Insertible through the bore of the plug is a flexible hose 38 by means of which a douche or catheter may be enteredand extended inwardly as far as may be desired, thus affording means to enter liquids in cleansing the bo-dy'opening in the person, orof entering medicaments.
When the hollow plug is not in melt is readily removed and a solid plug 39 is substituted.
It is to be noted that the entire apparatus is so designed as to normally hangjdf its own volition, in a suitable manner; that all, parts are readily amenable to thorough cleansing, and being rendered aseptic.
It will thusbe seen that there is provided a device in which theseveral objects of this invention are achieved, and which iswell adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
The instant application isa substitute. for my 1 priorapplication, SerialNo. 337,130, filed May As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment, above set forth, itis to be understood that all matter herein set forth is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my, invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A colostomy appliance comprising a cylindrical tube having a hollow head, said head comprising a pair of angularly disposed projecting faces each having an outwardly extending annular flange, one of said face flanges adapted to be applied to the body of the patient, the flange of the other face having a cover pivoted thereto, said cover having an opening and a transparent plate in said opening, a catch secured t said last-mentioned flange in opposed relation to the pivot of said cover, said last-mentioned face further having a pair of opposed loops, a belt secured to said loops, and an irrigating tube mounted on said head at the junction of said cylindrical tube with said head.
