Application September 11, 1943, Serial No. 502,036
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in boat-s and more particularly to outboard motor boats.
An important object of the invention is to improve the riding qualities, speed and strength of a flat bottom type boat without materially increasing the cost of production.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view.
Figure 3 is a rear elevational View.
Figure 4 is a front elevational View.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken on a line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 6-6 of Figure 2, and
Figure '7 is a fragmentary sectional view through the bottom of the. boat taken on a line 1-1 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 5 designates the flat bottom of the boat, 6-6 are the straight vertical sides and 'l is the square vertically straight stem. The sides 66 converge toward the bow to produce a sharp vertical front end 8.
v A short front keel 9 formed of a thin strip of wood is recessed in a longitudinal groove in the bottom and the remainder of the bottom is provided with a V-shaped keel ll formed of a thin strip of wood l2 secured to the bottom and to the-opposite lower edges of which are secured one edge of longitudinal planks l3 and M, the other edge of the planks being secured to the bottom 5.
Both the keel 9 and strip l2 have beveled longitudinal lower edges.
Interposed between the rear end of the keel 9 and the front end of thekeel H is a block I having rearwardly inclined beveled side edges merging with the side and front edges of the planks I3 and I4 and having a, pointed front end l6 and sharpened inclined bottom edge I I in 1ongitudinal alignment with the'strips 9 and 12.
A triangular block [8 is secured centrally on the rear portion of the block l5 having a pointed vertical front edge I9 and flat bottom 20, in the horizontal plane of the strip I 2, andhaving a transversely extending rear edge in the plane of the front ends of the planks l3 and M. The block I 8 functions as a cutter in traveling through the water, while the block l5 closes the front end of the space between the planks l3 and I4 and the bottom 5. v
The bottom edge of the stern is formed with a tapering extension 2| to close the space at the rear end of the keel formed by the planks l3 and I4 and the rear end of the keel strip I2 is inserted in said extension to support the strip.
Seats 22 and 23 are provided in the boat.
The V-shaped keel strengthens the bottom of the boat and theflat portion of the bottom facilitates a more rapid getaway.
It is believed that the details of construction and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A boat including a flat bottom, vertical sides and a stern, the sides converging forwardly to form a sharp bow, a strip secured to the bottom along its longitudinal center line, and planks ex--' tending longitudinally of the bottom at opposite sides of the strip with one edge of the planks secured to the sides of the strip and the other edge of the planks secured to the bottom inwardly of the sides of the boat to provide a hollow V-shaped keel, said stern having an extension on its lower edge closing the rear end of the hollow keel, and a beveled block having rearwardly inclined side edges and a, pointed front end closing the front end of the hollow keel.
2. A boat including a flat bottom, vertical sides and a stem, the sides converging forwardly to form a sharp bow, at strip secured to the bottom along its longitudinal center line, and planks extending longitudinally of the bottom at opposite sides of the strip with one edge of the planks secured to the sides f the strip and the other edge of the planks secured to the bottom inwardly of the sides of the boat to provide a hollow V-shaped keel, said stern having an extension on its lower edge closing the rear end of the hollow keel, a beveled block having rearwardly inclined side edges and a pointed front end closing the front end of the hollow keel, and a triangular-shaped block secured on the bottom of the beveled block, the rear edge of the last-named block being in the plane of the front end of the hollow keel and the front end of the last-named block being sharpened to form a cutter.
3. A boat including a fiat bottom, vertical sides and a stem, the sides converging forwardly to form a sharp bow, a strip secured to the bottom along its longitudinal center line, and planks ex- I end of the hollow keel, and atriangular-shaped 1 block secured on the bottom of the beveled block. the rear edge of the last-named block being in the plane of the front end of the hollow keel and the front end of the last-named block being sharpened to form a cutter, said hollow keel terminating at its front end rearwardly of the bow, and a keel recessed in the bottom of the boat and extending from said blocks to the bow thereof.
