Description

Dec. 19, 1944. L. J. F ORTIN 2,365,260
DRILL ADAPTER Filed Feb. 2, 1945 ALLA wya ral ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 19, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DRILL ADAPTER Leon J. Fo -tin, Bath, Maine Application February 2, 1943, Serial No. 474,461
1 Claim.
My invention relates to drills, particularly the type known in the trade as a Corner Machine,
and has among its objects and advantages the provision of an improved adapter designed for for illustration, I make use of a collar l shaped to fit over the top arm l2 of the old man. This collar is tapered slightly, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, and may be secured to the top arm through the medium of set screws l4 threaded through the collar and nuts "5 welded to the collal side walls l8.
To the bottom wall 20 of the collar are welded the ends of a U-shape strap 22 as indicated at 24. The drill feed screw is, indicated at 26 and includes a square end 28 on which is mounted a double acting ratchet handle 30. Such handles are old and well known in the art. Above the square part 28, the feed screw 26 terminates in a short shaft 32 upon which is mounted a collar 34 fixed to the shaft 3.2 by a pin 36. Thus the collar 34 lies between the strap 22 and the bottom length 20 of the collar I0, but the shaft extendsloosely through a bore 38 in the strap 22, so that the feed screw may be rotated relatively to the collar and the strap 22 but is restrained from relative endwise movement.
My invention enables the work tobe set up more accurately and operates to provide a more uniform feed, in addition to preventing the drill from going down through the deck and destroying cable that might be located therebeneath- The present methods of drilling holes with .devices of the ,old man type particularly in stretched underneath the decks of ships.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain my invention, thatothers may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service.
I claim:
In a drill adapter, a tubular body adapted for slidable fitting on a drill arm, said body being of elongated rectangular cross section and tapered axially, means on said body for releas- 1 J ably fastening the same on the drill arm, a U-shaped member fixed to the bottom wall of the body and depending therefrom to provide a wall spaced from and parallel with the bottom body wall, said last mentioned wall having an opening .therethrough, a feed screw depending perpendicularly from said member having a shaft portion rotatably extended through said opening, and a collar fixed on said shaft portion of the screw between the spaced walls.
