2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements inbed lamps, the principal object in view being to provide a simply constructed, inexpensive, strong lamp for attachment to the head of a bed and which is equipped for conditioning to either direct light forwardly and downwardly for reading purposes, or, upwardly and rearwardly to convert the same into an indirect lighting bed fixture.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of my improved lamp in its preferred embodiment.
Figure 2 is a view in rear elevation,
Figure 3 is a view in vertical transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 4 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 and also drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view similar to Figure 3 showing the lamp conditioned for indirect lighting, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view in side eleva- .tion of one ofthe side frames and panels.
Reference being had to the drawings by nu merals, my improved lamp, in the illustrated embodiment thereof, comprises a pair of vertically elongated side frames I substantially c-shaped with horizontally straight upper and lower ends 2, a vertically straight front 3, rounded corners 4, and upper and lower vertically straight rear terminals 5 spaced apart for a purpose presently seen. The side frames I are of channel construction providing guideways 6 in the inner opposed faces thereof extending around the same and closed at the ends of the terminals 5.
A pair of side panels I, preferably of hardened plastic material, are fitted in the side frames I to fill in the same, said panels being thinner than the frames I and fitted therein flush with the outer faces of the frames, whereby said frames I form ledges 8 extending around the same from the inner faces of said panels I.
An internal frame of rod-like material connects the side frames I and comprises side pairs of front and rear vertical rods 9, I0 fitted in the ledges 8 to extend between'the ends 2 of the frames I and which are suitably secured to said ing purposes.
ledges flat against the inner sides of thepanel I. Front and rear pairs of upper and lower horizontal rods II, I2 connect the front and rear rods 9, I0, and upper and lower cross-rods I3, I4 connect the front and rear rods 9, Iii, as best shown in Figures 3 and 5.
,A hook I5 extends from the center of the upper rear rod II rearwardly past the terminals 5' for attaching the lamp over the head of a bed, not shown, or the like, in the usual manner.
An electric light I6 is provided in the lamp and which is mounted on the upper rear rod II centrally thereof by an angular arm H.
A flexible, curtain-like shade extends between the side frames I, said shade comprising slats I8 connected together by a flexible tapes I9 for relative hinging movement and having the ends thereof slidably mounted in the guideways 6 with a friction fit. The shade is shorter in length then the guideways 6, the arrangement being such that said shade may be adjusted to engage one end thereof with the upper rear ends of the guideways 6, in which position it will extend along the upper ends 2 of the frames I, along the upper terminals 5 and part way down the' fronts of said frames I so that the light will be deflected downwardly and forwardly for read- On the other hand, said shade may be adjusted to engage its other end with the lower end of the guideway 6 and in this position extend along the lower terminals 5, the lower ends of the frames I, and part way up the fronts of said frames I to deflect the light upwardly and rearwardly for indirect lighting.
In Figures 1, 2- and 3, the shade has been shown as adjusted into the first-described position to condition the lamp for reading purposes,
whereas, in Figure 5, the shade has been shown as adjusted into the second-described position to condition the lamp for indirect lighting.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A lamp for attachment to the head of a bed or the like comprising a pair of opposed side frames of C shape providing thereon horizontal upper and ,lower ends, a front vertical portion and upper and lower vertical rear terminals spaced apart whereby the backs of the frames are open, said frames having channels extending aroundthe inner sides thereof, side filler panels secured on said frames, an internal skeleton frame of rod-like material'connecting said side frames, means extending rearwardly from said internal frame for attaching the same to the head of the bed, an electric light in the transverse center of the internal frame, and a curtain-like shade of hinged together slats having side edges slidably mounted in said channels for adjustment of the shade along said channels into different positions to deflect the rays from said light in different directions.
2. A lamp for attachment to the head of a bed or the like comprising a pair of opposed side frames of C shape providing thereon horizontal upper and lower ends, a front'vertical portion and upper and lower vertical rear terminals spaced apart whereby the backs of the frames are open, said frames having channels extending around the inner sides thereof, side filler panels secured on said frames, an internal skeleton frame of rod-like material connecting said side frames, means extending rearwardly from said internal frame for attaching the same to the head of the bed, an electric light in the transverse center of the internal frame, and a curtain-like shade of hinged together slats having side edges slidably mounted in said channels for adjustment of the shade along said channels into difierent positions to deflect the rays from said light in different directions; said ends of the slats having a friction fit in said channels for trictionally locking the-shade in different adjusted positions.
