My invention relates more particularly to adhesive labels, tags, stickers, and the like, having adhesive on one side for securing them to other members, and more particularly, my invention relates to articles of the character referred to which are provided with pressure sensitive adhesive with a protective cover member over said adhesive and adapted to be removed therefrom just before the label or sticker is to be applied to another member.
Considerable difiiculty is experienced in removing the protective cover member at times, and one of the objects of my invention is to provide improvements therein whereby said protective cover members can be more easily and quickly removed without damage to the label or sticker.
Another object of my invention is to provide in an article of the character referred to a protective cover member or strip which is split or divided longitudinally, intermediate the edges of the label or sticker, with the adjacent edges of said cover member overlying a longitudinal area uncoated with the adhesive, whereby when the label or sticker body is bent at the uncoated area, the edges of the cover member are raised for ease in grasping said edges for removing said cover strip or member. l,
Another object of my invention is^ to provide a device to be used in connectionvwith such a label or sticker strip with guide means for the cover strip or member whereby such cover strip can be pulled laterally from the label or sticker members, leaving such members at an angle to the longitudinal and thus facilitating the removal without damage to the labels or sticker members.

Other objects and advantageous features of my invention will be apparent from the embodiments thereof shown on the accompanying sheet of drawings, taken with the specifications thereof. In the drawing:

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, my device as here illustrated for explanatory purposes, includes a metal member I I, of iat sleeve like form, with its top end portions rounded at angles, as I2, I2, to form guide members for the removal of the cover or protective strip or member, designated I3. and which is placed over the adhesive nside of a label or sticker strip, designated I4, which may be scored or cut at intervals, as at I5J to form separate labels or' stickers, I6, I6. In the opposite end of the device II is shown a friction insert member I1, the outer end of which is shown hooked over the end of the member I I, and the inner end of which is formed into a friction-end l1' to bear yieldingly on the members moving through said device. Thus the split cover or protective member I3 is pulled from the label or sticker strip laterally in opposite directions, as indicated in Fig. 4, the adhesive matter being designated I8. The pulling of the portions of the cover or protective strip laterally in opposite directions oiset each other and the label strip is caused to move forwardly, while the cover strip is removed at an angle over the rounded angle guide portions I2, I2 of the member I I.
In price marking machines such as the Monarch illustrated by the Kohnle Patent No. 1,327,241, dated January 6, 1920, special forms of label strips of the character illustrated in Figure 7 of the drawing of said patent are used; such strips being provided with slits extending transversely of the strip for substantially one-third of its width, so that the feeding fingers of the ma- 2 2,304,607 chine can engage and feed the strip as described I claim: in said patent. 1. An article of the character referred to com- In order to make possible the employment in such machines of a label strip having a split, removable backing, I make the two portions of the backing strip of unequal width as shown in Fisure 5, with the transverse slits (which extend into the backing as well as the label strip) extending into the wider portion. This arrangement insures that the cross-slitted portion and the other portion of the backing strip will be of approximately equal tensile strength so that they can be readily stripped by pulling them over angled edges as herein described.
In Fig. 6, the device Il* is shown unsplit and with its end provided with one anglevportion 2l, so that the cover member 22 is .removed laterally, leaving the adhesive matter Il, il, at the angle indicated at 2|, thus facilitating the easy removal of the cover or protective member without tearing the same and without injury to the adhesive label or sticker member, 23.
In Figs. 'I and 8, I have shown a sheet 2l, provided with adhesive areas, as 25, 25, and with a cover or protective sheet 26, split at 26', with the edges at the split overlying an area 24' uncoated with the adhesive, as seen in Fig. '7, so that when the member 2l is -bent at the uncoated area, the edges of the cover sheet will be raised so as to be easily grasped between the fingers and removed or started, whether placed in any kind of device or machine or not.
In Figs. 9 and l0, I have shown a device Il, similar to that shown in Figs. 1 to 4, with a knife blade 21 positioned in the juncture of the edges of said device, and so shaped and positioned that the cover strip or member 28, as it is 4pulled outwardly and against the edge of the knife blade 21 is split, as indicated at 21', Fig. 10.
It will be understood that the particular form, or size of the label or sticker member, and the application of the pressure sensitive adhesive thereto may be varied in many ways, the object of the present invention is to make it easier and quicker to remove the protective or cover strip or member placed over the adhesive side thereof, and to do it without injury to the member or members having the adhesive thereon, and without tearing the cover or protective strip or member and thus making it necessary to get another starting thereof.
By splitting the cover sheet or strip, asvindicated, and having the edges at the split overlie an uncoated area, it is very easy to get hold of the edges of the cover strip to remove it, as indicated in the drawing and particularly` in the larger sheets shown in Figs. 'l and 8.
By providing the device with the angularly positioned guide members, as i2, I2, or 20, or a single angular member` 2|, Fig. 6, the cover or protective member can-be quickly, evenly and continuously removed without tearing either the adhesive member, or the cover member.
' It will be understood also that the label ortag members thus made can be used in any suitable machine or holding apparatus for convenience and which includes the features of device ll here shown for illustrative purposes, that is: the angular guides for the cover sheet or strip as it leaves the adhesive.
I do not limit my invention to the details of construction and arrangement shown on the drawing for illustrative purposes, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.

An article of the character referred to comprising a label having a relatively non-adhesive zone extending therethrough with adhesive portions on both sides of the zone and a backing sheet having a cut along said zone, the cut edges of the backing sheet substantially meeting in nonoverlapping relationship.

An article of the character referred to comprising a backing sheet and a label sheet coated with adhesive which may be peeled off the backing sheet, the label sheet having a narrow relatively non-adhesive zone with adhesive areas on each side of the zone, the backing sheet having a slit extending lengthwise of said zone intermediate the edges of the zone, the edges of the slit substantially meeting in non-overlapping relationship, and the label sheet extending continuously across the zone transversely thereof and one dimension of the label sheet being at least a multiple of the corresponding dimension of a label.

An article of the character referred to comprising two elongate superposed backing and label strips held together with a coating of normallytacky adhesive which is fast to the label strip but readily peels off the backing strip, the label strip consisting of a series of label units defined by lines of cuts and arranged in a continuous row, one of the strips having a slit extending lengthwise of the article intermediate the edges ofthe other strip, and the label strip having a relatively non-adhesive zone extending lengthwise of the article along said slit.
6. A label assembly comprising superposed backing and label strips temporarily held together by interposed normally-tacky adhesive from which the backing strip is readily peelable; said backing strip being slit longitudinally of said assembly; said label strip having a non-adhesive area underlying said slit; and both said strips being partially divided 'by a series of cuts extending from one edge of said assembly to points adjacent but spaced from said slit.
