No.. 394,410 fi1edMay21, 1941. It will, be
substanevident, however, that various features of t he inthe. heir hanger tframe .3 are].tblocklik ke s I8 s d ng-h r c ive i cnsitud n ly extendin ialined key slots I9 in the top surface of the plate l2. Projecting upwardly from the plate I2 befltween the key blocks [8, ISisa block or lug 20 integral with the plate I2 and. slidingly fitted within a longitudinal guideway 2| formed in the hanger frame projection l'l. Secured by screws 22 to the opposite sides of the hanger frame projection H are gib members 23, 23, webbed for revention may be incorporated in other forms of cutting apparatus and'may :be associated with mining machines of other types.
The kerf cutting apparatus l includes a suprectionure-lative to its guides on the hangerframe inforcement, and having inwardly directed top ledges 24 provided with inner inclined surfaces 25 engaging corresponding inclined surfaces 26 on the hanger frame. These gibs have inwardly directed jhottom flanges. 21 underlying and. engaging the plate guides I3. The key blocks [8. received in the plate slots l9 receive the. lateral thrust of the cutter bar during the kerf cutting thrustsof the cutter bar" in a vertical direction,
i. e., in adirection at right anglestothe direction :'in which lateral thrusts are imposed, in an abvious manner. l l l For adjusting the cutterbar in an endwise di- 3, is an adjusting screw '28 engaging a nut 29 'be varied as desired. When the adjusting screw has been adjusted to move the cutter bar into the desired position, the gibs 23 may be tightened to clamp the parts firmly in position. I
By arranging the bar adjusting screw .wholly outside of the cutter bar in the manner disclosed,
and by the provision of the gibs 'and guides arranged in the manner set. forth, the cutter bar may be made up of plates and bar members without the necessity of slotting the plates to receivethe adjusting screwwithin the cutter bar, as in previous known devices. Further by adjustably cutter bar, a'member carrying said cutter bar and guided on said guideway for adjustment relative to said frame in a direction lengthwise of said bar, means for rigidly securing said bar to said adjustable member for adjustment therewith, a sliding interlocking connection between said frame and said member for reducing the transmission of lateral stresses'to said guideway while permitting adjustment of said member, said interlocking connection being efiective irrespective of the adjusted position of said member on said guideway, and a rigid interlocking connection extending in parallelism with saidsliding connection and disposed between said bar and said member for reducing the transmission of lateral stresses to said securing means.
2. A kerf cutting apparatus comprising, in
combination; a hanger frameproviding a guideguiding the cutter bar relative to the hanger frame in the manner disclosed the cutter bar is not only made more rugged but also is supported in an improved manner. By the provision of the keys and key blocks, lateral stresses on the bar rivetsand gibs are minimized, resulting in a more rugged construction, and by. tightening the gibs the parts may be firmly held in adjusted position. Further by the provision of the improved hanger frame structure, the cutter bar is supported in an improved manner, and by the particular disposition of the bar on the hanger, slotting or otherwise weakening of the cutter bar is eliminated resulting in a stronger construction. These and other advantages of the invention will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While there is in this application specifically described one form'which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A kerf cutting apparatus comprising, in combination, a hangerframe providing a guideway, a
way, a cutter bar, a member carrying said bar and guided on said guideway for adjustment relative to said frame, a key and slot connection between said frame and said member for reducing the transmission of lateral stresses .to said guideway, meansfor rigidly securing said bar to said member, a key and slot connection between said bar and said member for reducing the transmission of lateral stresses to said securing means, and adjustable means arranged between said member and said frame for adjusting said member on its guideway, the key of said first mentioned key and slot connection slidingin the slot thereof'during such adjustment.
3. A kerf cutting apparatus comprising, in combination, a hanger frame providing a guideway, a
cutter bar, a member carrying said cutter bar and guided on said guideway for adjustment relative to said frame in a direction lengthwise of said bar, a sliding interlocking connection between said frame and said member for reducing the transmission of lateral stresses to said guideway While permitting free adjustment of said member, said sliding connection being effective irrespective of the adjusted position of said member on said guideway, elements for rigidl securing said bar and said member together, and rigid interlocking connection between said bar and said member for reducing the transmission of the lateral stresses to said securing elements.
