of the free rotary movement of the roller the workpiece'is freely fed through the machine in the stitching operation.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have diagrammaticallyillustrated, in section, a part of the sole 33 of a shoe, part of an upper 34 in the operation of stitching the upper to the sole as indicated at 35. By reas'onfof the angular'support of the' workpiece by the end portion 20 of the plate H, as well as angularity provided by the roller 25. The workpiece is supported in a position which facilitates the stitching operation as at 35,- allowing the presser foot end IE to snugly fit along the irregular contour of the upper of a shoe during the stitching operation. The teeth 22' offthe supporting plate, as well as the teeth of the roller retains the workpiece at all times in proper position, and the portion 36 of the roller which pro- J'ects above the surface of the plate engages: the workpiece to'slightly lift the same from the plate in the feeding operation thereof. v
It may be said that the workpiece support comprises a unit presenting onebevelled or angular surface, and thissurface. is divided into,a-stationary or non-movable portion and a movable claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 7
1. The combination with a sewing machine of a workpiece supporting attachment, said attach.
ment comprising a plate having a downwardly inclined surface arranged beneath the needle of the machine, said surface being formed by elongated tooth like projections extending in the direction of the feed of a workpiece beneath the needle of the machine, means exposed through saidsurface engaging a workpiece; to aid in the operation of stitching the same, and said last named means comprising a freely rotatable 2. The combination with a sewing machine of a workpiece supporting attachment, said attach ment comprising a plate having a downwardly inclined surface arranged beneath the needle of the machine, said surface being formed by elongated tooth like projections extending in the direction'of the feed of a workpiece beneath the needle of the machine, means exposed through said surface engaging a workpiece to aid in the operation of stitching the same, said last named means comprising a freely rotatable element, and said element having a bevelled surface conforming to the inclination of the inclined surface of said supporting plate.
3. A workpiece supporting attachment, for
stitching machines, said attachment comprising a post, an axis arranged at right angles toj'one end-portion of the post, a roller freely rotatable on said axis, said roller having'a' bevelled surface adapted to be engaged by theworkpiece and arranged substantiallyin' alinement with'the stitching mechanism of the machine at one sideof the needle of themachine, stationarymeans secured to said post adjacent and partially enveloping said roller forming asupport for the workpiece, and said means having an upper surface conforming in part to the bevelled surface of-said roller.
4. A workpiece supporting attachment for stitching machines, said attachment comprising a post, an axis arranged at right angles to one end portion of the post, a roller freely rotatable on said axis, said roller having a bevelled surface adapted to' be engaged by the workpiece and arranged substantially in alinement with the stitching mechanism of the machine at one side of the needle of the machine, stationary means on said post adjacent and partially enveloping said roller forming a support for the workpiece, the bevelled surface of said roller having teeth or projections, and said last named means having a surface substantially paralleling the bevelled surfaceof theroller.
i -5. A workpiece supporting attachment for stitchingmachines, said attachment comprising a post, an axis arranged at right angles to one end portion of the post, a roller freely rotatable on said axis, said roller having a bevelled surface'adapted to be engaged by the workpiece and arrangedsubstantially in alinement with the stitching mechanism of the machine/at one side of the .needle of the machine, means on said post adjacent said roller forming a support for the workpiece, the bevelled surface *of said roller having teeth or projections, said last named means having a surface substantially paralleling the bevelled surface of the roller, and said last named surface being formed. by elongated teeth arranged at right angles to' theaxis of said roller.
6. A workpiece support attachment for sewing machines comprising a plate, means adjustably supporting the plate beneath the needle of the machine, said platehaving-a horizontally flat portion, and-a downwardly inclined curved portion arranged beneath the needle of the machine, the lowerend of said inclined curved portion terminating in an inwardly turned lip, and the outer surface of said inclined portion being formed by longitudinally extending and transversely spaced ribs.
'7. A workpiece supporting attachment for stitching machines, said attachment comprising a mounting portion and a work engaging plate inclined downwardly with .respect thereto and arranged beneath the needle-of the machine,
means for adjustably supporting theattachment in the machine to position said plate with respect to the needleand presser foot of the machine,
the central portion of said plate being apertured, and a roller mounted for free rotation in the aperture of said plate, with the surface .of said roller exposed through the plate to engage the workpiece, in providing free movement of the workpiece over the plate in the. operation of stitching the same.
8. A workpiece supporting attachment for stitching machines, said attachment comprising amounting. portion and a work engaging plate inclined downwardly with respect thereto and arranged beneath. the needle of the machine,
means foradjustably supporting the attachment in the machine to positionsaid plate with respect to the needle and presser foot ofthe machine, the central portion of said plate being apertured, a roller mounted for free rotation in the aperture 'of' said plate, with the surface of said roller exposed through the plate to engage the work-f piece, in providing free movement of the workpiece over the-plate in theoperation o'f stitchingthe same, and said roller being conical in forn'f presenting a bevelled surface in alinement with the angular portion of said plate. 9.
