Description
Nov. 28,1944. .M. MALLORY ENGINE GOVERNOR Filed Jan. 8, 1944 I Patented Nov. 28,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 7 ENGINE oovamvoa Marion Mallory,l)etroit, Mich. Application January 8', 1944,, Serial No. 517,485
7 Claims.
This invention relates to an engine governor.
In-my previous application Serial No. 473,062, filed January 21, 1943, I have shown a governor for controlling the speed of an internal combustion engine wherein the governor valve is controlled by a suction device operated by the intake passageway suction and provided with an air bleed to atmosphere controlled by a centriiugally unbalanced valve. This centrifugal governor has I proved very successful in operation.
The present invention relates to 'a modification of my aforementioned governor and in particular is concerned with a governor wherein the governor valve will open very quickly as soon as the engine speed decreases below the governor speed and whereinthe governor valve will close enough for centrifugal valve It to open orifice II and admit air to suction device 1 I. This rapid valve mechanism will have a greater air bleeding Y effect on the suction device I the further adjusting valve 23 is turned in to restrict orifice 22. Under such condition, assuming the engine is running at its governed speed and. valve Ii is partly or fully closed, governor valve 6 willop'en very quickly as soon as the engine speed decreases opening of governor valve 8 is desirable in some cases but it valve 23 is screwed in farenough to reduce the power of suction device II, then governor valve 6 will close more slowly permitting more rapidly when the engine reaches its governed speed to prevent overrunningof the engine beyond its governed speed.
The drawing is a vertical section partly in elevation showing my governor used with a car.- buretor.
My engine governor comprises 'the following parts: a carburetor I having air inlet 2, manually controlled throttle valve 8, governor housing 4 having a fuel mixture outlet 5, butterfly governor valve 5 mounted on pin I, crank arm 8 fixed on the pin "I and connected by link 9 with diaphragm III 'in the suction device II. Suction device: II is connected by means oi. conduit l2, passageway ill in the distributor shaft and orifices I4 and I5 with atmosphere. Orifice I4 is controlled by centrifugally unbalanced valve I8, which is urged toward open. position by tension spring I'I. Suction device I I is connected by conduits I8, I9 with the intake passageway onthe engine or" outlet side 5 of governor valve 8. Conduit I9 is con-,
nected by conduit into venturi 2| An adjustable restriction is provided between conduits I9- and I8 in the form of an orifice 22 which is controlled by a conical needle valve 23 in housing 24. Needle valve'23 has a screw fit in housing 24 so that it can be turned inwardly to restrict orifice 22 and turned outwardly to open or decrease the restriction oforifice 22. a
' Theapparatus as thus far described is identithe engine to overrun beyond the governed speed; 1
for example, if the engine is idling with no load and throttle 5 is opened wide, spring 21 will pull governor valve 6 wide open and the enginewill run several hundred R. P. M. over its governed speed and then settle back to it's governed speed. This is due to the delay in the power or vacuum built up in suction device ll.
To overcome this condition I use a vacuum "operated by-pass around adjustable restriction B because the ball valve 2! remains cal with that-{shown in my copending application 1 Serial No. 478,062 and functions in the manner described in said copending application.
The purpose of the adjustable restriction 22,
23 is to meter the suction or vacuum impressed v on diaphragm I0 through conduits I8. I! and 20. If needle valve 23 is screwed in toward a closed position, the suction on diaphragm III will.
be lowered because orifice I I, of the centrifugal 22, 23. This vacuum operated by-pass comprises a conduit 28 running from conduit I9 to conduit l8. Conduit 28, is provided with a valve 29 backed up by compression spring SI and normally seating on seat 3i. Hence-when governor valve Ii starts to close and the vacuum increases in conduit I 8, valve 29 opens thereby admitting more suction to suction device I l which causes the valve 8 to close more rapidly. The by-pass valve 29 does not ailect or slow down the opening of valve ill under such conditions. I claim:

A device for controlling the speed or an internal combustion engine having an intake passageway comprising a governor valve, a suction responsive device connected to said governor valve for controlling the same, a conduit connecting the suction device with the intake passageway on the engine side of said governor valve. a restriction. in said conduit, a by-pass ,conduit around said restriction, acheck valve controlling said by-pass, said check valve being responsive to the suction in the intake passageway to open as the suction is increased'due to the closing of the governor-valve whereby the closing of the governor valve is accelerated.
