The present invention relates to apparatus for attaching baiiles to mulier tubes and more particularly to apparatus which positively` aligns the baiiies in av predetermined relation.
Before the employment of outwardly projecting louvers on muiiler tubes, it was the practice to provide baiiies having centralopenings through which the muiiier tube was disposed and then to spot weld the bafes onto the tubes to secure them in position. However, since the employment of louvers having projecting portions came intouse,
it was necessary to make the opening in thebafiies of such a sizeas to clear the louvers. p Since the openingsin the bailles were of such size'as to prevent a snug t on the portion ofthe tube not provided with louvers, it was then necessary to crimp the baffles in order to bring the central opening down to a size whereby the baies could be secured to theptube by some convenient method such as spot welding. The crimping operation is unsatisfactory as such and is expensive. Particularly unsatisfactory is the misalignment ofthe baiies that resultsin making diiicultsub' sequent telescoping over the baffles of anouter shell or tube.` Another practice has been to roll ridges in sheet metal before rolling it into muffler tubes and then mounting :baiiies on the ridges on the tubes. An example of. this practice is disclosed in PatentNo. 1,878,424 to Oldberg. .'Ihis method is unsatisfactory because in lock seaming the muier tubes, the ridges are crushed.
According to the present invention, apparatus is provided for expanding limited lengths of the muffler tube into peripheral vcontact with enlarged openings in the bailes. ment, a bead is struck up from the expanded portions of the tube on each vside of the baiiles to prevent axial movement of'the bales with respect to the tube. Briey, the invention consists of supporting the baffles in clamping units in a predetermined relation, disposing the muiller tube through the openings in the baiiies while they are supported in the clamping units, and then projecting a quill and mandrel assembly carrying expanding dies into the tube. The dies are moved radially outwardly to expand limited portions of the muiiler tube into engagement with the bailles to clamp the baiiles on the mutller tube. The dies are actuated by a hydraulic cylinder which moves the mandrel relatively to the quill and the quill and mandrel are moved into and out of the muler tube by means of a pneumatic cylinder. f
' Referring particularly to the drawings, the reference character I indicates a table, disclosed particularly in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, supporting clamping units 2, 3 and 4.
3 are arranged for receiving baffles 5 of one size andthe clamping unit 4 is designed for receiving baffles 6 of another size of smaller diameter than the baiiles 5. Each clamping unit 2, 3 and 4 is providedwith an upper and a lower half. Fig. 3 illustrates an end view of the clamping unit 3 and serves to illustrate the general form and operation of each oi the clamping units 2, 3 and 4. As shown, the clamping unit 3 is provided with a swingable upper half 1 and a stationary lower half 3, the two halves being connected by a pivot 9. The lower half 8 is mounted on a base I0 and is provided with a rearwardly extending ear II. The upper half 1 is provided with an upwardly projecting ear I2, shown in Figs. 2 and 3. z
Connecting the ears II and I2 is a toggle consisting of upper link members i3 and lower link members I4 placed on opposite sides of the ears I2 and il respectively. The inner ends of the links i3 and I4 are pivoted to each other on opposite sides of a block I5.
The base l extends rearwardly from the table I and is provided on opposite sides thereof with upwardly extending ears 2D. Between the ears 2l) there is pivoted at one end a pneumatic cylinder 2I, provided with compressed air inlet and exhaust conduits 22. A piston 23, within the cylinder 2 I is provided with a piston rod 24 which is connected to the block I5. By moving the piston 23 to the right, as viewed in Fig. 3, the piston rod 24 and the block I5 will move to the `right to bend the toggle, consisting of the links I3 and I4, in the center to pivot the upper half 1 of the clamping unit 3 about the pivot 9. A spring pressed stop 26 is provided to absorb the shock and limit the opening of the top half 1 of the clamping unit 3.
As shown particularly in Fig. unit 2 is actuated by a cylinder 21 and the clamping unit 4 is actuated by a cylinder 28. It will be understood that the piston 29 in the cylinder 21 acts through its piston rod 3U to actuate a toggle mechanism to lift the top half of the clamping unit 2 and that the piston 36, in the cylinder 28, acts through its piston rod 31 to actuate a toggle mechanism 38 to lift the top half of the clamping unit 4.
The clamping units 2 and 3 are provided with chambers 39 for receiving and clamping the baffles 5 and the clamping unit 4 is provided with chambers 48 for receiving and clamping thebaffles 5. When the cylinders 21, 2| and 28 have been actuated to lift the top halves of the clamping units, 2, 3 and 4 respectively, baflles 5 and 6 are placed in the lower halves of the chambers 2, the clamping The clamping units 2 and n 39 and 40 respectively. While the upper halves of the clamping units 2, 3 and 4 are raised, the mufiler tube 4I, which is to receive the ballles 5 and 6, is disposed manually through the openings in the bailles 5 and 6 and is positioned against an adjustable stop 42, shown particularly in Figs. l and 2. The stop 42 is secured to the table I by a screw 43, passing through an elongated slot 44 in the base plate 45 of the stop 42. By raising the screw 43 and moving the base plate 45 longitudinally of the table I, the position of the stop 42 may be varied to correctly position the muflier tube 4I with respect to the clamping units 2, 3 and 4. Adjacent the stop 42 is a rest 46 suitably secured to the table I, on which the outer end of the muflier tube 4I is supported. The top surface of the rest 46 is provided with a curved tube receiving slot 41. When the muiiier tube 4I has been inserted in the baffles 5 and 5, the cylinders 21, 2I and 28 are actuated to close the clamping units 2, 3 and 4 to clamp the bailles 5 and 6 and the mufller tube 4I therein as hereinafter explained.
For the purpose of adjustment, the clamping units 2, 3 and 4 are slidable longitudinally on the table I and maintained in alignment by a key 48, shown in Fig. 3, the key way therefor being partly in the table I and partly in the bases of the clamping unit. In view ofthe fact that apparatus, according to the present invention may be employed for a variety of combinations of clamping units and thus bailles, the table I is provided with holes for receiving securing screws by which the 'clamping units may be secured thereto. As shown particularly in'Fig. 3, the clamping unit 3 is secured to the table I by securing screws 49, projecting through the base I0 into the table I. It will be understood also that in the use of the machine, additional clamping units may be employed, or the clamping units employed may be for use with bailles of only one size, rather than two sizes, as shown.
When the muffler tube 4I and ballies 5 and 6 have been arranged in position within the clamping units 2, 3 and 4, the structure for expanding spaced portions of the muier tube 4I into contact with the baffles 5 and 6 is inserted. This structure consists of a quill having concentrically disposed therein a mandrel 56. The quill 55 is of very slightly less external diameter than the internal diameter of the tube 4I, and the mandrel 56 is slidably disposed within a longitudinal bore 51, within the quill 55.
The quill 55 and the mandrel 5G and their associated parts are disclosed broadly in Fig. 1, and more specically in Figs. 4 through 9. Reference to Figs. 1 and 6 discloses the lexpanding dies which consist of a plurality of segments 58, carried by the quill 55, there being one set of expanding die segments 58 for each baffle to be secured to the tube 4I. The expanding dies are disclosed more particularly in Figs. 6, 7 and 8. Fig.- 6 discloses a section through the mandrel 56, the quill 55, and one set of die segments 58. Each complete expanding die consists oi four segments 58, disposed in slots 59 in the quill 55. Figs. 4 and 5 disclose enlarged cross-sectional portions of the mandrel 56 and the quill 55, together with portions of the bailles 5 and 6, and the expanding die segments 58, associated therewith. Each die segment is provided with a follower member 60, projecting through slots in the quill 55 to the bore 51 therein. The follower members 60 extend into operative association with inclined cam grooves 6I in the mandrel 56.
Associated with eachdie segment 58 lis acantilever leaf spring 62, 4having one" end thereoiianchored in a slot 63, in the quill 55. Each spring 62 has the freeend thereof radially movable in a slot 64 in the quill 55 and is stressed to normally urge associated die segments 58 radially inwardly by bearing on shoulders 65 thereon.. 'Ihe springs 62 continuously urge the die segments 58 into engagement with the inclined surfaces of the cam grooves 6| respectively.I By reference to'Figsql, 4 and 5, it will be observed that when the mandrel 56 is movedto the left, as shown, with respect to the'quill 55, the die segments 58 will be cammed radially outwardly againstthe opposition of the springs 62, and further thanvwhen the mandrel 56 is moved to theright, with respect to the quill 55, the springs 62 `will urge the die segments 58 radially inwardly.
The die segments 58 are sho-wn particularly in Figs. 6, '1 and 8. One of the die segments 58l of each set, as shown particularly in Fig. 6, is provided with a groove 66, disposed in alignment with an axiallyA extending groove 61 in the surface of the quill 55. The grooves 66 and 61 are for the ypurpose of receiving the lock seam 68 `in the muler tube 4|. Since the; groove 66 is provided in one of the die segments 53 of each set, thelock seam 68 will not act to distortthe muiiier tube 4| upon expansion of the die segments 58 and cause a discontinuous engagement between the tube 4| and the bailievbeing secured. It is preferred that the depth ofthe grooves 66 in the die segments 58 be such that they snugly receive the lock seam 68 and will therefore expand that part .of the muiler tube 4|, seam 68,
secured.
Of the four die segments 58, comprising each set, two of them are provided at opposite ends thereof with tongues 18 for cooperative disposition in grooves 1| in adjacent die segments 58. The-tongues 1|]`v and grooves 1| interlock, as shown in Fig. 6, so that as the die segments 58are Cammed radially by the inclinedsurfaces of the camming grooves 6|, to expand axially spaced parts of the muiiier tube 4| into engagement with the baffles 5 and 6,'there will not be a continuous axial line of separation between the die segments 58, with the result that a continuous line of engagement'between the muler tube 4| and the baies 5 vand 6 is obtained.
It will be observed that each'of the die segments 58 is provided with a pair of spaced ridges 12. ' In operation of' the apparatus, according to the present invention, after thevbailles 5` and 6 receiving the baflles 5 are 58, expanding portions of the muiiler tube 4| into contact withthe baiile ilanges14. The result is that the groups of bales being in alignment may readily telescopically receivel outertubes. As will be apparent from Fig. 1, the clamping members 2 and 3 take one form, and the clamping member 4 takes another form although the functions of the two forms are the same. The clamping members 2 and 3 each comprise abody portion 15, which as shown in Fig. 3, comprises two halves 1 and 8, pivoted at 9. Each half of the body portion 15 is provided with a backing member.16, and a housing member 11, separatedby a spacing member 18. The housing members 11 and spacing members 13 are connected to the body members 15-by bolts 19. As will appearparticularly in Figs' land 4, the chambers 39 for annular in conguration and aredenedby the backing members 16, the housing members 11 bers 18. The backing up members 16 also provide supplementaryrings 82, the halves of which bear against the muiiler tube 4| when the clamping units 2 and 3 are closed, to support and align the muffler tube 4| in a predetermined position, prior to and during the expanding action of the segments 58. In the form of the invention shown, the supplementary rings 82have a somewhat less internal diameter than the backing up rings 80. This is because the lform o f the apparatus shown is for use in securing baiiles to mufler tubeswhen the baffles 'have suiiciently large openings to permit them to be moved over the externallyv projecting louvers y83 with vwhich the muiller tube 4| isk provided. However, it is considered, as disclosed inmy co-pending application executedv on and the spacing memin Fig. 4, the backing even date herewith and filed herewith, that the invention is equally applicable for securing baflles to muffler tubes which are not provided with externally projecting louvers. In such a case, the bailles may have openings approximating the size of the mufer tube to which they are to be secured, and therefore it would not be necessary to expand the sections 8| of the muiller tube 4| so greatly as shown. Consequently the difference between the internal diameter of each backing up ring 80 and the internal diameter of its associated supplementary ring 82 need not be nearly so great as illustrated in Fig. 4. It will be understood, as is well known in the art, that baiiies are secured to portions of the muffler tubes in which there are no louveis.
4 As shown particularly in Fig. 1, the body members 15 are connected for convenience on oppovsitely disposed sides of the chamber 39 forming members 16, 18 and 11. This arrangement is provided for preventing interference between the supporting and operating mechanism for the clamping units 2 and 3. However, it will be appreciated that if it were desired to space the baffles 5 further apart, that there would be'no interference and that the said opposite arrangei ment of the parts, as disclosed in Fig. 1, need not be resorted to.
The clamping unit 4, differing in form but not function from the clamping units 2 and 3, is provided with a pair of body members 90, comprising upper and lower halves 9| and 92 respectively, which are pivoted together in the same manner as the upper and lower halves 1 and 8 of the clamping unit 3, asshown in Fig. 3. To the body member halves 9| and 92 are secured opposed supporting sections 93 and 94, as shown in Fig. 1. To the supporting sections 93 are secured by screws 91, backing members 95 and housing members 96. Likewise, to the supporting sections 94 are secured, but to opposite sides thereof, backing up members 98 and housing members 99, by screws |00. It will be seen from the drawings that the backing members 95, together with the housing members 96 and the backing members 98, together with the housing members 99, provide the annular chambers 40 for receiving baliies B. The parts of the clamping unit 4 function in the same manner as the corresponding parts of the .clamping units 2 a-nd 3.
Each backing up ring 66 of the clamping units 2, 3 and 4 is provided with an ejecting pin ||l| disclosed particularly in Figs, 3 and l0. The pins are disposed in bores |02 and are provided with pistons |03 which are disposed in enlarged bores |04. Springs |05 in the bores |04 resiliently bear against the pistons |03 to urge the 'pins |0| upwardly to eject each mufiler and baffle assembly after baffles have been secured on a muffler tube 4| and the clampingrunits 2, 3 and 4 opened.
For moving the quill 55 into and out of the muler tube 4| there is provided beneath the table a pneumatic cylinder H0, having suitable air inlet and outlet conduits The cylinder H6 is provided with a piston ||2 to which is connected a piston rod ||3 as shown in Fig. l. The piston rod H3 is in turn connected to a bracket H4, depending from a carriage H5, supported from the table i on sliding plates H6, as shown in Figs. 1 and ll. The connection between the piston rod |3 and the bracket H4 is provided by a cap H1, threaded to the end of the pistoni-od I i3, and by an annular dog I i8 clamped by screws l I9 to the bracket ||4 hydraulic cylinder Supported on the carriage I|5 is a hydraulic cylinder |20 having a. piston |2| to which is connected a piston rod |22, in turn connected by a coupling |23 to the mandrel 56, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The coupling |23 consists of a block |24, having the piston-rod |22 threaded thereto. The block |24 is provided at one end thereof with a semi-circular recess |25, having therein a ridge |26 and a removable semi-circular cap |21 having a recess corresponding in configuration to the semi-circular recess |25. The mandrel 56 is provided with a groove |28 for receiving the ridge |26 and the corresponding portion of removable cap |21. The cap |21 is secured to the block |24 by screws |29 to provide a positive yet separable connection betweeny the mandrel 56 and the block nected by screws |36 to the carriage ||5. The connection between the quill 55 and the member |35 is similar to the connection between the mandrel 56 and the block |24, the connection being separable by virtue of a removable cap |31, secured to the member |35 by screws |38 shown particularly in Fig. 2.
The connection between the bracket ||4 and the carriage ||5 consists of a restricted extension |39 (see Fig. l1) projecting upwardly through a slot |46 in the table and a guiding plate |4| disposed between the inside faces of the sliding plates ||6. The bracket ||4 together with the guiding plate |4| are connected to the carriage ||5 by bolts |42. The slot |40 in the table extends longitudinally of the table I, as disclosedv yplate |45 similar to the guiding plate |4|, disposed between the sliding plates H6, a block |46 disposed in the slot |40 and a plate |41 disposed beneath the table and overlapping the edges of the slot |40. The parts |45, |46 and |41 are secured by screws |48 to the carriage ||5.
In order to reinforce the action of the screws |36 in supporting the member |35 from the carriage H5, there are disposed between the hydraulic cylinder |20 assembly and the member |35, a pair of tubes |49. Bolts v|50 are disposed through openings in the member |35 and through the tubes |49 into threaded engagement with the |29 assembly to clamp the tubes |49 between the member |35 and the hydraulic cylinder |26 assembly.
The hydraulic cylinder |20 is provided with inlet and outlet conduits |5| for conducting hydraulic fluid for controlling the movement of the piston |2|. The operation of the apparatus is as follows: When the hydraulic cylinder |20 is at the left end of the table or in other words, at the opposite end of the table to which it is shown in Fig. 12, the quill l55 together with the mandrel 56 are spaced laterally from the clamping units 2, 3 and 4. By manipulating a suitable control valve (not shown), compressed air is di.. rected to cause the pistons in the cylinders 21, 2| and 28 to open the clamping units to permit the insertion of baffles 5 and 6 in the lower halves of the chambers, 39 and 40. The muiller tube 4I is then disposed throu-gh the openings in the bailles and 6 and aforesaid suitablecontrol-valve is manipulated to actuate the pistons in the pneumatic cylinders 27, 2| and 28 to close the clamping units 2, Sand 4 to clamp the bailles 5 and 6 56 to the right to insert the quill 55, together with the mandrel 56 into the muiiler tube 4|. Following this movement, a suitable Valve (not shown) is manipulated, preferably automatically, to move the hydraulic piston 12| tothe left as Viewed in Fig. 13, to move the mandrel 56 to the left, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5, to cause the inclined surfaces in the cam grooves 6| to cam the die segments 58 outwardly to expand spaced restricted portions of the muffler tube 4| into engagement with the flanges 14 of the bailles 5'and 6 as hereinabove explained.
, Since the hydraulicA cylinder |20, which actuates the mandrel 56, andthe member |35, which supports the-quill 55, are-,both supported from the carriage H5, it will be clear lthat the thrust resisting the movement-.of the piston I 2| in the hydraulic cylinder |20 is vabsorbed ybythe carriage H5, s o that during the relative movement between the quill 55 andthe mandrel 56, there 55 and the mandrel 56 may be then withdrawn from the muffler tube 4| andfthis result is accomplished by moving the piston l| |2 in the pneumatic cylinder ||0 to the left to move the carriage I5 and the structure mounted on it to the left. The clamping units 2,' 3 and 4 may then be opened, themuiller tube 4| with thebales 5 and 6 secured thereto removed, and new bailles 5 and 6 inserted in portions ofthe chambers 39 and 40 respectively, of the lower halves of the clamping units 2, 3 and 4 to start a new cycle of operation.
While the bailles disclosed in ther drawings and described above are annular inconguration with concentrically disposed openings, it is to be understood that the invention is'equally applicablel to securing bailles which'are of some other conguration than annular, as for instance, ellipf tical, and which have openings therein which are not concentric, but which areV disposed to one side of the center.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:
1. A device of the character described for securing a plurality of bailies having annular flanges outlining openings therein to a tube projecting through said openings, comprising a mandrel for receiving a tube thereona plurality of radially expanding dies, each comprising a plurality ofcircumferentially aligned expanding dies on said mandrel, means 4to xedly support said baffles in a predetermined axial alignment and radially opposite said radially expanding dies respectively, means for projecting said diesoutwardly to radially expand .the tubeV onto said flanges, and means to engage ,the outside of the tube Ato support the same while the expandingy dies are moved radially outwardly to expand the tube onto the flanges.

3. The invention as defined in claiml wherein the expanding. dies are provided with marginal beads for forming circumferential ridges in the tube at the edges'of .the flange for lockingthe sameA against axial movement relative to the tube.
It is to be understood that within the scope 'of the present invention other combinations of clamping units than the units 2, 3 and 4 disclosed may be employed, and different .forms of clamping units if desired may be employed. Furthermore, it is contemplated asdisclosed particularly in my aforesaid co-pending application, that at they same time, bales maybe secured toa mulller tube, which have relatively large openings and relatively small openings, with respect to the tube tomwhich they are being secured-,it being understood that those baffles with relatively large` openings are for disposition over outwardly projecting louvers and that those bailles with relatively small openings are foruse where there are no outwardly projecting louversor wherethere are no louvers at all lin the portions ofthe tube over which the baffles must be moved to bring them into the desired relation for aflixation to thev tube.

Adevice ofthe character described for securing'a baiile having an opening therein to a tube projecting through said opening, comprising a rod for receiving a tube thereon, a. plurality of circumferentially aligned expanding dies supported by said rod, and means for projecting said dies radially outwardly to radially expand the` tube into engagement with said baiilefor securing the same to said baille, said 'dies having adjacent edges in overlapping rela-tion circumi ferentiallyof said tube whereby said dies in all positions of radial movement provide together a continuous circumference. v

A device of the. character described for securing a baille having an Iopening therein vto a tube projecting through said opening, comprising a mandrel having a quill telescoped thereon for receiving and supporting a` tube thereon, a plurality of circumferentially aligned expanding dies supported by said quill, and camming means supported by said mandrel for projecting said dies outwardly to radially expand the tube into Aengagement with said flange, ysaid quill having openings therein through which. the camming connection between said camming means `and 'I dies is effected.

A device of the character*'described` for-securing a baille having an annular ilange outlining an opening therein to a tube projecting through said opening, comprising a mandrel having a quill telescoped thereon for receiving a tube thereon, a plurality of circumferentially aligned expanding dies supported by said quill, and having portions circumferentially overlapping portions of said quill, said quill having openings therein through which portions of said dies project to said mandrel, said openings having walls preventing movement of said dies longitudinally of said quill, said mandrel having camming means engaging with said dies for projecting said dies outwardly to radially expand the tube into engagement with said ilange, and means to move said mandrel with respect to said quill to actuate said camming means.

A device of the character described for securing a baille having an opening therein to a tube projecting through said opening comprising a mandrel having a quill telescoped thereon for receiving and supporting a tube thereon, a plurality of circumferentially aligned expandingl dies supported by said quill, camming means supported by said mandrel for projecting said dies outwardly to radially expand the tube into engagement with said balile, and spring means supported by said quill for urging said dies into engagement with said camming means, said quill having openings therein through which the camming connection between said camming means and dies is effected.

A device oi' the character described for securing bailles having central openings therein to a tube projecting through said openings, comprising a cradle, means to clamp a plurality of baffles in said cradle in a predetermined alignment, a mandrel having a quill telescoped thereon for disposition in a tube disposed through the baille openings, a plurality of sets of circumferentially aligned expanding dies supported by said quill, there being one set for each baille, and camming means supported by said mandrel for projecting said dies outwardly to radially expand portions of the tube beneath said baffles respectively into engagement with said baiiles.

A device of the character described for securing a baille having an opening therein to a tube projecting through said opening, comprising means to support a baille and a tube projecting therethrough in predetermined xed relative positions, a mandrel having a quill telescoped thereon for disposition insaid tube, said quill supporting said tube, means for feeding said mandrel and quill into said tube, a plurality' of circumferentially aligned expanding dies supported by said quill, camming means carried by said mandrel for projecting said dies outwardly to radially expand the tube into engagement with said baille, and means to actuate said mandrel to actuate said camming means to projectr said dies outwardly, said quill having openings therein through which the camming connection between said camming means and dies is eiiected,

A device of the character described for securing a baille having an opening therein to a tube projecting through said opening, comprising means to support a baffle and a tube projecting therethrough in a predetermined xed relation, a mandrel having a quill telescoped thereon'for disposition in said tube, said quill supporting said tube, means for feeding said mandrel and quill into said tube, a plurality of circumferentially aligned expanding dies supported by said quill, camming means carried by said mandrel for projecting said dies outwardly to radially expand the tube into engagement with said baille, and means to move said mandrel axially with respect to said quill, to actuate said camming means to project said dies outwardly, said quill having openings therein through which the camming connection between said camming means and dies is eiected.

A device of the character described for securing a baffle having an opening therein to a tube projecting through said opening, comprising means to support a baille and a tube projecting therethrough in a predeterminediixed relation, a mandrel having a quill telescoped thereon for disposition in said tube, said quill supporting said tube, means for feeding said mandrel and quill into said tube, a plurality of circumferentially aligned slots having bottoms in said mandrel, the bottoms of said slots being inclined to the longitudinal axis of said mandrel and comprising camming surfaces, a plurality of circumferentially aligned expanding dies having portions projecting into said slots and into engagement with said camming surfaces, said quill having openings through which portions of said dies extend into said slots, and means to move said mandrel longitudinally with respect to said quill to cause said camming surfaces to ac t against the portions of said dies in contact therewith to project said dies outwardly to radially expand the tube into engagement with said baille.

A device of the character described for securing a baille having an opening therein to a tube projecting through said opening, comprising means to support a b aiile in fixed position, a mandrel having a quill telescoped thereon for disposition in a tube disposed through said opening in said baffle, means for feeding said mandrel and quill into said tube, a plurality of circumferentially aligned expanding dies supported by said quill, said dies having portions circumierentially overlapping portions of said quill, camming means carried by said mandrel for projecting said dies outwardly to radially expand the tube into engagement with said baule, and means to move said mandrel axially with respect to said quill to actuate said camming means to project said dies outwardly.

A device of the character described for securing a baffle having an opening therein to a tube projecting through said opening, comprising means to support a baiile having an opening therein in fixed position. a mandrel having a quill telescoped thereon for disposition in a tube disposed through said opening in said baille, a
carrier, a connection between said quill and carrier, actuating means mounted on said carrier, said actuating means being connected to said mandrel, means to move said carrier for moving as a unit said carrier, quill and mandrel to project said quill and mandrel into said tube, a plurality of circumferentially aligned expanding dies supported by said quill, means carried by said mandrel for projecting said dies outwardly to radially expand the tube into engagement with said baille, and means to actuate said actuating means on said carrier to move said-mandrel axially with respect to said quill to actuate said projecting means to project dies outwardly.

A device of the character described for securing a baiile having an opening therein to a tube projecting through said opening, comprising means to support a baille having an opening therein in fixed position, a mandrel having a quill telescoped thereon for disposition in a tube disposed through said opening in said baie, a table, a carrier on said table, a connection between said quill and said carrier, actuating means `mounted on said carrier, said actuating means being connected to said mandrel, a slot in said table, a bracket connected to said carrier and projecting through said slot, means disposed on the opposite side of said table from said carrier connected to said bracket to move said carrier along said table for moving as a unirI said carrier, quill and mandrel and for projecting said quill and mandrel into said tube, a plurality of circumferentially aligned expanding dies supported by said quill, means carried by said mandrel for projecting said dies outwardly to radially expand the tube into engagement with said baie, and means to actuate said actuating means on said carrier to move said mandrel axially with respect to said 20 said mandrel.
