UNITED STATES P T NT OFFICE.
ROZANDER S. HIGGINS, OF NEOGA, ILLINOIS.
SULKY-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,157, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed October 25, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROZANDER S. HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Neoga, in the county of Cumberland and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sulky or riding plows, and more especially on the device for which Letters Patent N 0.206,? 32 were granted to me on the 6th August, 1878.
One object of the present invention is to provide better means for raising the rear end of the plow, so that the plow will enter the ground more quickly. Ifound thatin my previous device I could not put the plow into the ground without going live or six feet, and sometimes farther, because the rear of the plow could not be raised up for the purpose.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved means for preventing the dirt from collecting on the furrow-wheel and causing the plow to run deep.
My improvements consist, first, in mounting the furrow-wheel on an arm hinged to thestandard and extending rearwardly and upwardly, and then bent over the beam to form a horizontal or lateral bearing for a set-screw working through a lug formed on the strapplate which holds the arm in place against the beam, while permitting the tine adjustment of the arm by means of the set-screw, as hereinafter described.
' My improvements consist, further, in combining with said hinged arm a vertical bar hinged thereto, and fulcrumed at its upper end to a foot-lever hinged to the rear end of the beam for raising the plow, as hereinafter described.
My improvements consist, further, in combinin g with the furrow-wheel a scraper, which is formed with an arm bent at right angles thereto and hinged on the beam, and having a lateral portion provided with a set-screw bearing on the beam, so as to adjust the scraper to the wheel, as hereinafter described.
In order that my invention maybe fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved device from the share side, the parts being rep- (No model.)
resented in their normal condition. Fig. 2 is a side view from the landside, showing the plow adjusted on and the scraper to the furrow-wheel, and in dotted lines the position of the plow and foot'lever when the rear end of the plow is raised for inserting the pointin the ground. Fig. 3 is a top view of the device.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the dilif'erent figures.
Referring to the drawings, A is the plowbeam, which may be attached by any suitable means to the sulky-frame. (Not shown.)
B is the standard, braced by an arm, I), to the beam.
0 is the share, and D is the landside.
E is an arm, hinged at e to the standard and extending rearwardly and upwardly, and then bent over the plow-beam, as shown at e.
F is the furrow-wheel, mounted on a stud, G,journaled in the elbow of the arm E. To the rear of the stud G, and hinged to the arm E at h, is a vertical, or nearly vertical, arm, H, whose upper end is fulcrumed at h to a footlever, I, hinged att' to the rear end of the beam. The upright portion of the arm E is held in place by a strap-plate, J, securely bolted to the side of the beam, and formed with a vertical arm, j,and a lug, j,which receives a set-screw, K, whose point works on the bent portion 8 of the arm E for adjusting the latter, and consequently elevating the rear end of the plow to a certain extent, so as to give a fine adjustment thereto relatively to the furrow-wheel. The foot-lever I is for the purpose of lifting the rear end of the plow quickly and provides a coarse adjustment.
L is a scraper for the furrow-wheel, hinged by its bent or horizontal portion 1 on the rear end of the beam at a, and extending laterally, as at l, to receive a set-screw, M, for adjusting the scraper toits work by pressingon the beam and lifting its lateral portion or extension.
It will be observed that the scraper and furrow-wheel can be adjusted relatively to each other. The set-screw K adjusts the landside to a nicety and keeps it from sliding on the bottom of the furrow, because it is carried on the furrow-wheel. The scraper keeps all dirt off the wheel, which is thus prevented from elevating the rear end of the plow by dirt adhering thereto.
Having thus described my invention, the
following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of hinged arm E, standard B, furrow-wheel F, and set-screw K, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the hinged arin E and furrow-wheel, of the strap-plate J, haxing lugj, and set-screw K, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the vertical bar H, foot-lever I, hinged arm E, furrow-wheel F,
and plow-standard, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The scraper L, having horizontal portion 1, hinged on the top of the plow-beam a, 15 formed with lateral extension I, and provided with set-screw M, in combination with the furrow-wheel F, as set forth.
