ALARM-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,591, dated .April 12, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY LooKwooD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Alarm Lock Designed More Especially for the Doors of Dwelling-Houses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is an internal view of my invention; one of the side plates of the case being removed for the purpose of showing the interior. Fig, 2, a` section of ditto, taken in the line Fig. l. Fig. 3, a section of ditto, taken in the line y, y, Fig. 1.

This invention consists in having both the latch and bolt of the lock connected with the hammer of a bell in such a manner that an alarm will be sounded by operating either the latch or the bolt, and using in connec tion with the alarm arrangement a movable disk or plate placed within the lock and in line with the key holes, two key holes being in one side of the lock case and one in the other, and the plate being arranged so as to be turned by the key in operating the bolt, the plate actuating the alarm mechanism, and preventing, when at rest and the lock in a locked state, the insertion of a key at the outer side of the door, when locked at the inner side.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the case of the lock, in one part of which a bell B, is secured, the bell being fully inclosed within the case.
C, is a hammer the rod D, of which is pivoted within the case A, as shown at a.
E, is the latch of the lock, the inner end of which is attached to a lever F, having its fulcrum at and a spring Gr, bearing against it in such a way as to have a tendency to keep the latch E, thrown out from the case as far as it is designed to go. This will be fully understood by referring to Fig. l. The bit collar H, of the'knob spindle I, acts against the lever F, when the latch is forced into the case A.
J, is the bolt of the lock which is fitted between proper guides or stumps as usual and has a tumbler guard K, applied to it and arranged in the ordinary way. The spring Gr, bears against the tumbler guard K, and has a tendency to keep its pin or projection c, engaged with the bolt J.
L, is a bar which is iitted in guides d, in the lock case and allowed to slide freely therein at right angles with the latch and bolt. The lower end of this bar is connected to the hammer rod D. To the inner side of this bar L, two buttons e, e', are attached. These buttons are allowed to turn outward from bar L, in the direction indicated by the arrows, see Fig. l, but they are not allowed to turn from the bar in the opposite direction being prevented by stops To the latch E, an inclined projection g, is attached and a similar projection 7L, is attached to the bolt J. To the inner side of bar L, a button z', is pivoted the form of which is shown clearlyV in Fig. l.
M, is a plate or disk, the edge of which is provided with tooth-like projections j. This plate has a recess made in it corresponding to the form of the key holes j 7c, 7c, and the plate or disk is provided at each side with annular ledges Z, Z, which fit in corresponding recesses or grooves in the sides of the case A, the plate or disk M, being allowed to turn freely in the lock case. To one side of the plate or disk M, a spring on, is attached. This spring is of horseshoe form and it has a projection n, on it which catches into notches in the side of the lock case and prevents the disk or plate from casually turning or moving.
The operation is as follows VVhen the knob spindle I, is turned and the latch E, drawn within the case A, the projection g, on said latch will actuate the bar L, and hammer rod D, in consequence of said projection coming in Contact with the button c, and the alarm will be sounded, and when the bolt J, is drawn inward by the turning of the key the projection it, will come in contact with the button e', and the bar L, and hammer rod D, will be actuated. Thus it will be seen that the hammer C, will be made to strike the bell by the movement of either the latch or the bolt. The key N, acts on the tumbler guard K, and bolt J, as usual and when the key is turned the plate or disk M, is also turned, as the bit of the key fits within it. The two keyholes c, 7c, are at the inner side of the door, only one keyhole j, be-
ing` at the outer side, consequently When the door is locked at Athe inner side the plate or disk M, Will cover the outer key hole y', and prevent the insertion of a key, as the hole in the disk or plate Will not register with the hole j, When the lock is locked at the inner side of the door, hence the object of having the two holes lo, 7c, at the inner side of the door, viz, to permit the key to be inserted into the disk or plate M, at the inner side of the door when the disk or plate is out of register with the hole j, at the outer side of the door. Then the plate or disk M, is turned the projections at its periphery strikes against the button z', and actuates the bar L, and consequently the hammer C. The buttons e, e', and z', after being acted upon to move the bar L, all return to their original positions by their own Weight or gravity.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. The bar L, provided with the buttons e, e, connected with the hammer rod D, and arranged With the latch E, and bolt J, provided With projections g, h, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The movable or adjustable plate or disk M, arranged With Vthe key holes y', 7c, lo, and provided with projections j', to act on the button z', of the bar L, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the plate or disk M, and bar L, When arranged With the latch E, and bolt J, to operate as described.
