Description

Sept. 19, 1944. ER. W R
' ROTARY TYPE HOLDER Filed Aug. 13, 19455 INVENTDR. g W. W44
Patented Sept. 19, 1944 ROTARY TYPE HOLDER Emil R. Weber, Mount Royal, Pa., assignor to Jas. H. Matthews & Company, Pittsburgh, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application August 13, 1943, Serial No. 498,456 x 4 Claims.
Thi invention relates to new and useful improvements in type holders for mounting on the shaft of a machine, and it is among the objects Fig. 1 is an exploded view in side elevationof a type holder and shaft embodying the principles of this invention;
Fig. 2 a side elevational view of the type holder and shaft in their assembled relation;
Fig. 3 an end elevational View taken along the line 3-3, Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 an end elevational view of a portion of the type holder taken along the line 44, Fig. 1.
In the drawing the numeral I designates a shaft having a collar 2 and shank 3 with a groove 4 in a chamfered or rounded end 5. The shaft is provided with a slot 6 for a purpose to be hereinafter stated. The numerals l and 8 designate type holders having segment-shaped recesses 9, as shown in. Fig. 4, for receiving type In, the type holder disks being provided with key-ways II for engaging the key (not shown) mounted in the key slot l2 of the shaft shank 3.
As shown in Fig.1, the type holder 1 is provided with an annular groove l3 for receiving an annular bead M of the type holder 8 and the latter is provided with an annular groove I-5 for receiving the annular bead I6 of a locking plate H, which is shown in Fig. 3 as adapted to receive spring fingers l8 mounted to have limited movement on dowel pins IS.
The spring fingers I8 are biased by springs 20 that are fastened by screws 2| to normally urge the spring fingers radially inward. The fingers iii are held by a cover plate 22 which is fastened by screws 23.
The type holders are assembled on the shank 3 of shaft l as shown in Fig. 2 by first placing the disks 1-8 and the lockin plate I! in abutting relation with the type l assembled therebetween. The cover plate 22 is secured on the locking plate I! and the assembled type holder is then slipped over the end of shank 3 with the key-ways H in alignment'with the key of the shank to bring the end type holder disk in abutting relation with the collar 2.
As the spring fingers IB slide over the front portion of the shank it will snap in place in the groove 4 to lock the holder on the shaft. When it is desired to remove the type holder assembly from the shank 3, a flat key 25 of substantially the thickness of the slot 6 is inserted in slot 6 of the shaft which causes the spring fingers Hi to spread, thus permitting the removal of the type holder assembly.
A type holder constructed in accordance with the foregoing description permits speedy replacement of the type, which is employed for embossing material passing beneath the type holder while the shaft is subjected to rotation. By eliminating the need of manually operable fa tening means, the wear on the type holder and shaft is reduced and the operation of changing type is greatly facilitated.
Although one embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.
I claim:
1. A type holder comprising a cylindrical shank having an abutting shoulder, said shank having an annular groove spaced from the end thereof and said shank having a slot extending from the end to beyond the annular groove, a type holder disk adapted to be keyed on said shank having a segment shaped recess for receiving type, and a locking plate for said disk having a spring finger normally biased radially inward adapted to snap into the annular groove of the shank to hold the typeholder in assembled position in abutting engagement with the shoulder in said shank.
2. A type holder comprising a cylindrical shank having an abutting shoulder, said shank having an annular groove spaced from the end thereof and said shank having a slot extending from the end to beyond the annular groove, a type holder disk adapted to be keyed on said shank having a segment shaped recess for receiving type, a locking plate for said disk having a spring finger normally biased radially inward adapted to snap into the annular groove of the shankto hold the typeholder in assembled position in abutting engagement with the-shoulder in said shank, and means for disengaging the spring fingers of the locking plate from the groove of said shank comprising a flat key insertable inthe end slot of the shank to spread the fingers out of engagement with the annular groove.
3. In a revolving type holder, a shank having a shoulder spaced from the end thereof and having an annular groove therein, the shank having a rounded end and having a slot ex- 7 tending axially from the end of the shank through said annular groove, a type holder assemblycomprising a plurality of disks having segment shaped recesses for receiving typ and a locking collar therefor embodying a plurality of spring biased fingers adapted to extend into the annular groove of the shank, said type holders andlocking collar being slid over the shank with the rounded end spreading the spring fingers to the diameter of the shank, said fingers snapping into position in the annular groove to lock the type holders on said shank, and means insertable in the end slot of the shank for spreadannular groove of the shaft, said type holders and locking collar being locked on said shaft, 7 and means insertable in the end slot of the shaft for spreading the spring fingers to remov the type holders from said shaft.
