E. H. ASHCROFT. Covering for Steam Pipes.
No. 235,846. Patented Dec. 28,1880.-
N. PEFERS. PHOTWLITHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD H. ASHCROFT, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
COVERING FOR STEAM-Pl PES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 235,846, dated-December 28, 1880.
Application filed November 1, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern): 7
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. ASHCROFT,
of Lynn, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Goveringfor Steam- Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a transverse section, of a pipe embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. 1 The object of my invention is to prevent the condensation of steam in its passage through conducting -pipes, particularly streetmains that are laid under ground.
The invention consists in covering the pipes with animal hair or other analogous substance and securing the same within a protecting casin g provided with coupling-flanges, as hereinafter particularly described.
In the accompanying drawings, arepresents a length of pipe fitted with screw-coupling flanges b b at its opposite ends; 0, a rigid cylindrical casing connected with the respective flanges b b, and d the interposed covering material. The flanges b b are provided with annular grooves 17 t, to receive the ends of the casing and a packing of lead or cement to secure and seal the same, and thereby form a Water-tight joint.
The casing c is preferably made in the form of a hollow cylinder of sheet metal; but any 5 other suitable material may be substituted that will confine the covering material, and which may be made in sectional partssuch as longitudinal strips, circumferential hoops, or other frame-worlc-the whole, when connected together, being coated with a plastic cement, as shown at h..
The covering material should be properly cured or dried, and may be applied in any desired thickness, but's'hould fill the intermediate space between the pipe and exterior casing.
The construction and the method of connecting therespective parts together, as shown, will enable the manufacturer to cover and complete each length of pipe, so that it may be transported ready for laying.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim I l. A covering for a steam-conducting pipe, consisting of animal hair or other analogous material inclosed within a surrounding casing or frame-work and the connected couplingflanges, and with or Without an exterior coating of plastic cement, substantially as described.
2. The pipe a, provided with the adjustable coupling-flanges b b, havin g the annular grooves *5 i, the connected casing c, and an interposed covering material, substantially as described.
EDWARD H. ASHGROFT.
