Description
UNTTED STATES PATENT r(Hflil'CE.
H. S. HALL, A. D. HUNT, AND C. J. WINGHESTER, OF JAMESTOVN, NEV YORK, ASSIGNORS TO H. S. HALL, A. D'. HUNT, AND C. E. JEFFORDS.
MACHINE FOR TAPERING STICKS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,570, dated April 12, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, H. S. HALL, A. D. HUNT, and CHARLES J. VVrNoHEsTER, all of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Rounding or Finishing Scythe-Snathes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, in which Figure l, is a back view of our invention in elevation. Fig. 2, is a vertical section of do, taken in the line a', Fig. l. Fig. 3, is a detached side view of the levers to which the shafts of the feed rollers are connected. Fig. 4, is a detached front view of the feed rollers and cylinder.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in the employment or use of a. hollow rotating cylinder' provided with radial sliding bearings and one or more cutters and two feed rollers, operated automatically from the driving or power shaft, substantially as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the snathes after being properly steamed and bent may be expeditiously finished orrounded or cut in taper form.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention we will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a framing which may be constructed in any proper way to support the working parts.
B, is the driving shaft placed in the lower part of the framing A.
C, is a hollow cylinder which is placed in the upper part of the framing A, and fit-ted between three pairs of friction wheels a, a, a, which are the bearings of the cylinder. A belt b, passes around a pulley c, on the driving shaft B, and also around the cylinder C.
l/Vithin the cylinder C, a ring or annular plate D, is placed concentrically and allowed to slide freely on guide pins cl, secured within the cylinder horizontally and having spiral springs e, placed on them which bear against the inner side of the ring or plate D, and have a tendency to force it out from the interior of the cylinder, see Fig. 2. To the ring or annular plate D, three projections f, f, j, are attached. These projections are grooved at the outer sides and work on guides g, at the inner side of the cylinder C. The inner surfaces of the projections f, are inclined and bear against the outer ends of slides 7L, which are fitted radially in slots in the face t, of the cylinder C. Each slide It, has a spring t', bearing against it which springs have a tendency to keep the slides thrust outward from the center of the face of the cylinder.
To the inner ends of two of the slides z, plates j, are attached, one to each. These plates are made concave at their edges and serve as bearings. To the inner end of the other slide z., a cutter 7e, is attached of gouge form.
At the center of the face 7L', of the cyliir der C, a circular opening Z, is made, and against the back side of the ring or plate D, a roller m, bears, said roller being at the end of a bar E, which is fitted loosely and allowed to slide on rods 1L, n, in the framing A. Each rod n, having a spiral spring o, on it, which springs have a tendency to keep the bar E, and roller m, thrust outward toward the back part of the framing A.
To the back side of the bar E, a roller p, is attached, see dotted lines in Fig. 2, and this roller bears against an inclined bar g, the upper end of which is connected by a joint to a slide s, which is fitted between vertical guides t, t, attached to the back of the framing A. Through the lower part of the bar g, a sector rod u, passes, and a set screw o, passes into the lower end of the bar and enables the bar to be set at any angle of inclination within the scope of its movement.
To the outer side of the slide s, a rack a', is attached, and into this rack a pinion J, gears, said pinion being on a shaft F, at the back of the framing. The outer end of shaft F, is connected by bevel wheels c', with a shaft G, having a worin wheel rl, (see dotted lines Fig. l) at one end, into which wheel a screw e, gears. a shaft f, which is connected by bevel wheels g, with a shaft L, that is driven by a belt from the driving shaft B. The shaft f, has a pinion j', placed on it, which pinion gears into a toothed wheel 7u', that is placed on a longitudinal shaft H, which extends the whole length of the framing A, and has one of its bearings in a lever l, attached to the framing by a pivot Z.
On the shaft H, and directly in front of The screw e', is on 1 the hole or aperture Z, of the face L, a feed roller m, is placed, and permanently attached. rliis feed roller is of double conical forni as shown cle-arly in F ig. 1l, and it is corrugated longitudinally. Directly belowr the shaft H, and in the saine plane a shaft J is placed, said shaft having a similar roller m, attached. One end of the shaft J, has its bearings in a vlever l, Which is precisely similar to the lever l, and is pivoted to the framing A., at n. The ends of the levers I, I, opposite to the ends that are pivotedtotlie framing are tted loosely on a rod L, on which spiral springs 0, are
placed, said springs bearing against the levers I, l, and having a tendency to keep the levers toward each other.
The operation is as follows z-Motion is given the shaft B, in any proper manner and the cylinder C, is rotated by the belt I), and the feed rollers mr, m, are rotated through the medium of the gearing herein before described. The snathe shown in red is placed between the rollers m, m, the small end foremost and said rollers feed the snathe through the opening Z, of the face h', of the cylinder and between the bearings j, j, and cutter c, the latter cutting the snathe in round taper form and the slides 72 of the bearings and cutter gradually expanding corresponding to the desired taper to be given the snathe in consequence of the gradual elevation of the inclined bar g, and through the medium of the rack a', and pinion Z2', said ybar actu-y ates the bar E, andthe roller m, pressing the plate D, inward` The taper or longitudinal profile form of the snathe may be modified as desired by varying the position of the bar g, and also its form. The rollers m', m, present the snathe at right angles to the cutter so that it Will be rounded and finished in precisely the same form as originally bent, the rollers in consequence of their double conical form preventing the snathe moving laterally out of proper position.
rlthis machine performs the desired Work very expeditiously and in a perfect manner. lf desired an additional cutter may be used as a smoother.
Having thus described our invention What We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
The rotating cylinder C, provided with the adjustable bearings y', j', and cutter 7L', Y
one or more, when said bearings and cutter are operated through the medium of the plate D, bar E, With inclined bar g, attached and the rack and pinion a, b, in connection with the springs e, or their equivalents sub-` stantially as described.
