Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EETCEO ADAM SCHWAAB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HEAD-REST FOR CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,705, dated December 21, 1880. l
Application filed March 26, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM SOHWAAB, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests for Chairs, ot which the following is a specification.
In the laccompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation, partly in section, of a barbers chair provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail vertical transverse section ofthe head-rest and its improved adjusting mechanism.
The invention consists in the combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, B represents the chair-back suspended between the sides of the frame A in any suitable manner.
The head-rest D is hinged to a plate, D', which is set by two bolts in the customary manner into socket-holes of the back. The plate D is notched or otherwise provided with a perm anently-xed toothed segment, E, which is engaged by a spring-acted bolt, E', sliding in guides at the inside of the head-rest. This slide-bolt i" is operated by means of a hookshaped handle, E2, which is arranged at the rear of the head-rest and attached to the slidebolt. By raising the handle E2 the slide-bolt is withdrawn from the segment E, and the head-rest may be set to the desired inclination, the bolt being thrown back to engage the teeth ot' the segment as soon as the handle is released.
As the head-rest is set to the forward edge of the plate Dl the adjusting devices can be set inside the outer line of the back, so that they cannot readily catch in the clothing ot the wearer. Moreover, by placing the bolt E inside of the head the latter can be turned down parallel to the plate D', which could not be done if the bolt and its operating-knob were outside. As the segment E is fixed it strengthens the plate D'.
The catch may be carried by the head-rest and concealed from view, instead of projecting beyond the latter.
I claim- The combination, with the chair-back, of a plate, D', a head-rest hinged to said plate at its forward edge, a segmental rack secured to said plate, and a bolt, E', arranged within said head-rest to engage with the rack, and provided with an external handle, E2, asset forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention Ihave signed my name, in pres` ence of two witnesses, this 19th day of March, 1879.
ADAM SCHVVAAB.
