Application December 9, 1943, Serial No. 513,536
1 Claim.
This invention relates to an accessory for tobacco pipes or holders for cigarettes or cigars and refers more particularly to a smoke deflector adapted to fit within the outlet end of the bit or mouthpiece thereof and which is so constructed and associated with said bit as to direct the smoke, as it emerges from the same, to a region centrally of the oral cavity thereby preventing the concentrated smoke from impinging against the tongue or roof of the mouth until it is diffused and mixed with the air in the oral cavity, thus eliminating the so called biting action or burning of the tongue or surfaces of the oral cavity.
More specifically, the invention comprehends a smoke deflector of the indicated character which is fashioned to provide an inwardly or forwardly tapering member of channel-shaped cross-sectional configuration adapted to be frictionally fitted within the outlet end of a pipe or holder bit with the hollow face disposed upwardly and which member is formed at the outermost end with an upwardly directed rear end portion as a continuation of its bottom wall. a
As a further objective, the invention provides a smoke deflector as an accessory for tobacco pipes and holders for cigarettes and cigars which is extremely simple in its construction and mode of use, which may be readily emplaced and removed and which may be economically produced and sold at a minimum price.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention is set forth in detail in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through the outlet end of the bit of a pipe stem equipped with a smoke deflector constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating the same positioned in the mouth of a smoker.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the smoke deflector removed from the pipe stem bit.
Referring to'the drawing by characters of reference A designates the bit of a tobacco pipe or of a holder for a cigarette or cigar, said bit being formed with the usual bore or smoke passage B extending longitudinally thereof, the outlet end of the same being of the usual oblong shape in cross-section, while C designates generally the ISL-Z27) The accessory or deflector C, which is preferably constructed or fashioned from resilient sheet material, is of substantially channel-shape in cross-section, tapers longitudinally and is of a size to snugly fit within the rear outlet end of the smoke passage B of the bit A, with the lower wall 10 conforming generally to the width of and flatly engaging with the lower surface of the outlet end of the smoke passage. The accessory or deflector C also includes upwardly disposed side flanges H at the opposite edges of the lower wall I0, which flanges lie flatly against the side walls of the outlet end of the smoke passage B and the upper free edges of which flanges H bear against and are bridged by the upper Wall of the smoke passage. The wider rear end portion l2 of the bottom or lower wall Ill extends upwardly with the rear edge of said portion 12 disposed in the plane of the upper edges of the side flanges l l and serving as a means for deflecting the smoke to a region centrally of the oral cavity. This prevents the concentrated smoke from coming into direct contact with the tongue or surfaces of the oral cavity until it has had an opportunity to diffuse and mix with the air in the oral cavity thus preventing painful biting or burning of the tongue or muceous membrane lining the oral cavity.
From the foregoing it is obvious that a smoke deflector in the form of an accessory has been provided which may be readily emplaced by inserting and forcing the same in the outlet end of the smoke passage of the bit and removed therefrom by withdrawing said deflector therefrom.
What is claimed is:
An accessory for the bits of tobacco pipes and cigarette-and cigar holders comprising a shank member of channel-shaped cross-sectional configuration and including a bottom wall having converging opposite side edges formed with upstanding side flanges, and an inclined rear bottom wall portion extending from'its juncture with the bottom wall toward the free upper edges of side flanges and with its free rear edge disposed substantially in a plane therewith to provide means for directing the smoke issuing from the bit to a region centrally of the oral cavity when said accessory is fitted within the outlet end of the bit with the hollow surface of the same disposed upwardly and with the wider rear portion protruding slightly beyond the outlet end of the bit.
