In Fig. 11 the cutter is shown at said opposite side with the two shims at the other side thereof. With the downward movement of the drill and the accompanyin cutter, the lower edge portion of the section 49 being sharpened, a hole 46 will be drilled and a slit made in the paper as shown in Fig. 16. Such slit is to one side of a diameter of the hole 46 which parallels said slit. In a second operation the drill will be removed and the cutter alone operated, whereupon a second slit will be cut through the paper spaced from but parallel to the first slit 5|, thereby leaving a slot 52 having parallel sides as shown in Fig. 17. A third form of cutter assembly may be used with the machine for cutting what is known as the Kalamazoo slots or recesses in the edges of the paper at spaced apart points. This includes a supporting body 36b, similarly slotted at 31 for the attachment by means of the set screws 38 and having a cutter 53, of the shape best shown in Fig. 12, connected with the supporting body and i with its lower edges sharpened and of a shape to make a substantially rectangular slot or recess 54 (Fig. 18) when the cutter is moved down to pass through the sheets of the pack 5. In this case the drill will not be used. The lower portion of the body 361) is recessed and a curved member 55 secured in the upper portion thereof, as shown at Fig. 13, the front edge of w ch comes to the rear inner cutting edge of the cutter 53, said member 55 serving as a deflecting member for the paper parts which are cut from the sheets and acting to move the same automatically in a rearward direction and direct them into the descending current of air passing through the tube 26 and thence to and through the fan housing 21.
A horizontal plate 55 is mounted for a sliding movement upon a guideway 51 in the upper part of the supporting casting 2 at one position, as shown in Fig. 2, passing through a side of and across the tube 26. When in such position across the tube an insurance is had against the passage oi any articles downwardly through the tube to the fan 29, such as tools or the like which may be around the machine when used in various adjustments of the machine or in interchangin the slotting assemblies. A vertical leg 58 is integral with and extends downwardly from the slide support 51 at the lower end of which an arm 59 is pivotally mounted and extends upwardly (Fig. 1),

The tube is then open for the downward passage of the pieces of paper which are cut from the sheets of paper when the slotting takes place. But automatically on the return upward movement of the drill to an upper position, the plate 56 is carried across the upper end portion of the tube 25; and it is moved to its outer position to clear the tube only at the times when the drilling and cutting operations take place. This structure is a safeguard and insurance against the dropping of undesired articles through the tube to the rotating fan 29 which, if it occurred, might damage the fan or the motor 28 and which also might be hard to recover. But if anything drops down the tube only to the stop which is made by the plate 56, it is relatively easy to recover the same and without any danger of damage. A further object is to conserve power since the fan is driven more easily when air is prevented from entering the tube.
The construction described has proven very practical and useful. The packs of paper, each pack including a plurality of sheets of paper in superimposed relation, are very quickly and accurately processed and provided with the desired shape or configuration of slot therein, most of which include an inner portion of circular form made by the drill, with lateral slots leading from the circular openings to the adjacent edge of the sheets of paper. The various slotting devices consisting of the supports 36, 36a or 361) and the appropriate cutters secured thereto are interchangeable. The adjustment of the supporting block by means of the set screws 34 and the slots through which they pass, permits the accurate adjustment of the cutters to desired positions with reference to the drill.
The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim:
1. In a machine for forming notched openings in a stack of sheets and the like, a boring tool, and a slotting tool located closely adjacent said boring tool, said slotting tool comprising a blade angular in cross section and having the work engaging edge thereof sharpened, said sharpened edge being substantially coplanar with the cutting edge of the boring tool, and means for reciprocating said tools together relative to the work.
