SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,457, dated December 14, 1880.
Application filed August 3, 1880. (ModeL) To. all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN DANIEL SANDERS,
' detached without the use of tools, will be fasting left for the insertion of a whiffletree-ring,
a chain-link, or other object to which the link is to be attached. One end of the body A is slightly beveled, and is slotted longitudinally to receive the tenon formed upon the end of the short bar B, which is hinged in place by a rivet or screw. The other end of the body A is beveled for the correspondingly-beveled end of the bar B to fit against. In the outer side of the beveled end of the body A is formed a longitudinal shoulder, G, to receive the free end of the spring-latch D, which is secured by a rivet or screw atits other endin a recess, F,
formed in the outer side of the bar B. The free end of the spring-latch D projects alittle, so that it can be raised from the shoulder G with the fingers in opening the link.
Thus far the construction does not differ substantially from what is already known to the public; but my improvement consists in forming upon the outer side of the free end of the bar B a lip, E, to cover and protect the free end of the spring-latch D, to prevent anything from striking against the free end of the said spring-latch and opening the link accidentally when the link is in use. The lip E also serves as a convenient handle in opening the link.
When the bar B is pressed down into place in closing the link, the spring-latch D springs into place and fastens the link automatically.
The solid side of the body A of the link is designed to be made heavier than the open side, to prevent the link from springing open when subjected to a heavy draft-strain.
