Description

(in Kodel.) 'H MQD-OUGALL. Button-and Stud.
No.'235,446. Fat ented D ec. 14,1880.
N-PETERS, PHOTO-UIHOG AEHER. WASHINGTON, Dv c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGH MGDOUGALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BUTTON AND STUD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,446, dated December 14, 1880.
Application filed October 28, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH MGDOUGALL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons and Studs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sleeve-buttons, collar-buttons, and studs, in whichare combined a front plate, a post projecting therefrom, and provided witha fixed arm, a movable arm secured .to the post by a pivot arranged parallel with said front plate, and a catch fonholding said movable arm in a locked position when desired. I
'The invention consists in the combination of a front plate, a post projecting therefrom, and provided with a fixed arm, a movable arm secured to the post by a pivot arranged parallel with said front plate, and provided with a projecting toe, a spindle capable of being turned, and extending beyond the edge of said f ont plate, and a catch upon said spindle for engaging with the toe upon the movable arm, and adapted to be disengaged therefrom by the turning of the spindle. The said spindle is preferably provided in rear of said shoulder or catch with a stop to prevent the undue movement of the movable arm, and I may also combine with the said spindle and its catch a spring for turning said spindle and causing said catch to automatically engage with the toe upon said movable arm.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the under Sldq of a sleeve-button embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section thereof upon the dotted line as m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 represents a horizontal section through henost and the toe of the movable arm and aview of the under side of the front plate and appurtenances, all the figures being made on an enlarged scale for the sake of more clearly illustrating my invention.
A designates the front plate, which may be uany desired shape and material, preferably metal, and which maybe decorated or finished in any suitable style to suit the taste of the manufacturer. Upon the under side of said front plate is rigidly secured a post, B, the
lower portion of which is bent over transversely to the post proper, sov as to form a fixed arm, 0. The post and arm'are represented as composed of a single strip or bar bent so as to form a bow-shaped arm and an open post, the two ends being fixed to the front plate, A; but said post and arm might be otherwise formed.
D design ates a movable arm, pivoted in open post B by a pivot or pin, 0., arranged parallel with the front plate, A, and having extending transversely to it a toe or gate, 12.
When the button is to be inserted in a button-hole the arm D is turned on its pivot or pin a so as to bring it into aposition approximately parallel with the arm 0, as shown clearly. in dotted outline in Fig. 2.
Upon the back of the front plate, A, and
projecting beyond the edge thereof, is a spindle, c, which is so arranged in a bearing, 01, and in the rim of the front plate, A, that it may be conveniently turned or oscillated, and which is prox'ided outside the rim or edge of the front piece with a thumb-piece, c,whereby it may be turned or oscillated. On its under side the spindle c has a slanting or cam-shaped incline, as seen in Fig. 2, which terminates in an abrupt shoulder or catch, 6, and in rear of said catch is a long projection, f, upon the spindle, which serves as a stop to prevent undue movement of the movable arm D. The movable arm D is preferably somewhat shorter than the bow-shaped arm 0, so that it may be swung back within the arm 0 when the button is to be inserted. After the arms 0 and D are inserted through the button-hole the armD is turned toward a position approximately in line with the arm (J, and the toe or gate 1), bearing upon the inclined or slanted camshaped surface upon the spindle 0, turns the latter until the said gate or toe passes the catch 0 and strikes against the stop f,whereby gii : remove it from thebutton-h0ls, ailihatiisnm- 1 v essary is to move the thumb-piece c" to oscil lata thespindle c amimm'e thecatclramrt 0f 1 1 the movable arm l) may swing'up inton pnsi engagemenmvith the toe or gate'b, whereupon tion parallel with the fixedarm C. 1
