' Machine for Treating Raw Hides.
N-o-. .2 35,442. Patented Dec. 14, I880.
$2 v EVEN-UR .NJEYERS, PHDTO-LIEICOGRAPHER. WA SHINGTON. D. O.
. v UNITED STATE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUeUsr-G. KRUEGEB, a citizen of the United States, residing atGhicage, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Machines for Treating Raw Hides; and I do hereby declare thatithe follow- 'in g is a full, clear, and exact description of thesame, reference bein g had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference 5 marked thereon.
Figure J of the drawings is a perspective "view ofa machine embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a top-plan view, partly in section Fig. 4, a detail view of the mechan ism for changing motion.
, The present invention has relation to that class of machines fortreating raw hides for which a'patent was granted to me July 22,
1879, No. 217,808; and; it consists in certain new and useful improvements thereon, asillustrated in the drawings and hereinafter described, whereby an automatic reverse motion is obtained that causes the machine to run faster one way than the other, the speed thereof being regulated to run, as desired, bythe size'of the cog-wheels,which is considered valuable and important in the treatment of raw hides, as it, at the same time the hides are being worked, stretches them.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre sents the frame-work of the machine, to which the several operating parts are connected.
The cages B0 are similar to those described and shown in my former patent, each of which i has a horizontal gear-wheel, ct, engaging with i pinions b c. I
The pinion b. which meshes with the teeth upon the wheel a of the cage B, has connected to it a lever, d, which is used to move the pinion back and' forward upon the horizontal shaft D, to engage or disengage or throw the pinion in or out of gear with the wheel a, so a that the cages B 6 may be run independently of each other, as found desirable.
The pinion c, unlike the sliding, pinionl), is rigidly connected to the shaft D, the shaft having secured to it a gear-wheel, e, and worm f. The worm f engages with the large wheel E, the latter carrying a weighted lever, F, or,
PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST 0. 'KRUEGER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MACHINE FOR TREATING RAW HIDES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,442, dated December 14, 1880.
Application filed October 19, 1880. (No model.)
. 'in other words, connected to the shaft of said wheel, the wheelhavingholes gaxially through the same and at equal distances apart for the reception .of pins '5. These pins t may be changed from one hole to another without stopping the machine, thus enabling the machine to be run to any length desired without loss of power, these pins acting the same as those in my former patent to shift the weighted lever F, but were stationary and not capable of being inserted in any one of the series of holes, as in the present case.
On a shaft, 7c, is a gearwheel, I, which meshes with the teeth of the wheel 6. Upon a shaft, m, is rigidly secured a pulley, n, and next to this is a loose pulley, 0, and again a third pulley, 19, which is also loosely hung upon the shaft. The lastanentioned pulley has rigidly connected to it a cog-wheel, 1', which meshes with the wheel 6. Upon the shaft m and next to the wheel 7 is a wheel, 8, of increased diameter, said wheel engaging with the teethupon the wheel 1.
The belt G, running from the fast pulley n to the loose pulleys carried by the worm and wheel; with the lever and shifting-bar H, in connection with the various cog-wheels above mentioned, causes an automatic reverse motion that compels the machine to run faster one way than the other.
Having now fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a machine for treating raw. hides, the cages B O, shaft D, having gear-wheel e, and worm f, in combination with the pulleys no 19 and wheels Zr 8, with an automatic shifting mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
-2. In a machine for treating raw hides, the combination, with the shiftingbar H and weighted lever F, of the gear-wheel E, having a series of holes, g, and the removable pins t", substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST 0. KRUEGER.
