UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICEO CHARLES ROHLFS, OF BROOKLYN, NEYV YORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,382, dated December 14, 1880.
Application filed September 25, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES ROHLFS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tail-Pieces for Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in dispensing with the use of holes in the apparatus usually known as the tail-piece, and substituting therefor my plan, as shown.
I use a tail-piece made of wood, metal, or other suitable material, so constructed that the knotted end of the string can be put in or taken out of place Without the aid of holes or pegs, as illustrated in the accompanying drawin gs, like letters referring to the same parts in either view.
Figure l is a view of the tail-piece, seen from 20 above, showing the slits C. Fig. 2 is a view from its side, showing the ridge B and the manner of holding fast the string.
In Fig. l A is the main part of the tailpiece; B, a ridge crossing it transversely; O, 25 small slits cut into the ridge B to receive and, together with the knot in the string, hold the string in place.
What I claim as my invention is A tail-piece for violins and similar stringed o instruments, consisting of the body A and ridge B, with the slits O, constructed and arranged as described, and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES ROHLFS.
