BED PAN COVER Filed Nov. 24, 1941 INVENTOIR. LUC/NDA JANE lf/Sf/C,

Patented July 11, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BEDPAN COVER Lucinda Jane Kiser, Indianapolis, Ind.
Application November 24, 1941, Serial No. 420,243
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to improvements in a cover and pad for bed pans.
It has for its object to provide a cover and pad for bed pans which. may be readily applied to the pan and which will cushion the patient while using the pan and which, at the same time, will provide a cover member so that the entire top of the pan may be covered after use by the patient and in the transportation of the pan to the toilet room, and to provide protection to the bed clothing while the pan is being used.
For the purpose of disclosing the invention, I have illustrated an embodiment of the same in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a plan view of a bed pan having my cushion applied thereto and with the cover closed;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a bed pan showing the cushion in longitudinal section; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a bed pan with the cushion in position and the cover open.
The general type of bed pan now in use is provided with a wedge-shaped nose or rear end I which merges into a rounded front end 2 having the usual spout 3 projecting therefrom.
My cushion comprises a cushion 4 adapted to conform in general shape to the top of the wedgeshaped portion of the pan. This cushion is provided with a rounded edge 5 conforming to the opening in the pan and is extended forwardly on both sides of the pan with side members 6 and 1 thereby covering the front end of the pan along each forward edge. The cushion tapers in thickness from rear to front, being thicker at the portion 4 and having the side members tapering to a comparatively thin end portion. The side members 6 and l terminate in a pocket 8 having downwardly extending side walls 9 graduall increasing in width toward the front, and formed integrally with the pocket is a cover II! which, in use. may be folded or thrown back to uncover the opening in the pan. After use, the cover may be folded rearwardly to completely cover the top surface of the pan while the pan is being transported.
The rear end of the pad is provided with a pocket having side walls I l and end walls l2 which terminate in a flat bottom wall l3. This pocket receives the rear end of the pan and due to the engagement of the forward pocket over the spout 3 of the pan and of the rear pocket over the rear nose of the pan, the entire pad will be held snugly in position.
The pad is preferably formed of rubber Or like material impervious to moisture and yet having a certain amount of stretch. The pad portion proper may be formed of sponge rubber with its outer surface formed to be impervious to the passage of moisture, and the top surface of the pad may extend and have as an integral portion thereof the pocket portion 9, as well as the cover I claim as my invention:
1. A bed pan cushion formed of elastic material impervious to moisture comprising a top cushion pad conforming in shape to the rear portion of a bed pan and having a pair of forwardly extending side portions adapted to extend forwardly and around the opening in a bed pan and terminate in a forward pocket for the reception of the spout of the bed pan, a cover secured to the forward end of the cushion adapted to be folded over the entire pan for concealing the same, the rear end of the pad having downwardly extending side and end walls, and a bottom wall connected to said side and end walls and extending forwardly a short distance to form a pocket on the under surface of said pad for the reception of the rear end of the pad and cooperating with the forward pocket for maintaining the pan in position.
2. A bed pan cushion comprising a cushion formed of sponge rubber shaped to conform to the rear end of a bed pan and having a pair of forwardly extending arms projecting forwardly beyond the opening in the pan and lying adjacent the side edges of the pan, the forward ends of the arms terminating in a pocket shaped to receive the spout of a bed pan, an integrally formed cover attached to the top wall of the pocket and having a general contour coincident with the contour of th entire bed pan, the rear end of the pad having downwardly extending side and end walls, and a bottom well connected to said'side and end. walls to form a pocket on the under face of the pad for the reception of the rear end of the pan and the entire structure being formed of a resilient material impervious to moisture whereby the resiliency of the material will aid in maintaining the pad in position on a pan.
