Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL FOSTER, OF OARTHAGE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRED CHAMPAGNE, OF MORIAH, NEW YORK.
MEDICINAL PREPARATION FOR THE HAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,223, dated December 7, 1880.
Application filed February 20, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL FOSTER, of Carthage, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Compound for Use for Dressing the Human Hair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a preparation for the hair, the object ofrit being to act medicinally upon the scalp to prevent or cure cutaneous, irritations to which the soap is liable, and also to promote the growth of the hair and give it a glossy and healthy appearance.
The invention is a compound of the ingredients specified belowin the proportions given, prepared and mixed in the manner fully hereinafter explained.
I take first of alcohol, two quarts, (95 proof oastor-oil, four ounces; bay-rum, two ounces; cloves, one-eighth of an ounce; mace, one-eighth of an ounce; common sage, oneeighth of an ounce; eleoampane, one-eighth of an ounce, powdered; common salt, one-half of an ounce; tincture cantharides, one teaspoonful; red Saunders, oneounce; and alcohol, two ounces, mixed together. These ingredicuts are thoroughly mixed, and then put into glass bottles, closely corked, and allowed to stand ten days, and then filtered. To this mixture, after filtering, I add one-halt ounce of lemon-grass oil and one-half ounce of oil of citronelle, mixed together. The completed mixture should then be allowed to stand twelve hours in closely-covered vessels, and it is then ready for use.
This mixture is not intended to and will not color the hair, but simply acts medicinally to cleanse and invigorate the skin, and thus to promote the comfort of the user and to stimulate the healthful growth of the hair.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The described compound, consisting of alcohol, castor-oil, bay-rum, cloves, mace, sage, eleeampane, salt, tincture cantharides, and red saunders, with any suitable perfume, substantially in the proportions set forth.
Dated January 29, 1878.
