The present'invention relates to improvements in thread tensioning devices for use in sewing machines operating on shoes or other heavy Inaterials of the type employing a hook needle and a take-upacting to take up each loop of thread drawn through the work by the needle and to give up thread during each sewing cycle at a rate greater than required by the other stitch form-j ing devices, so that the portion of thread ene'ag'e' ing the take-up becomes slack during a part of each sewing cycle. An example-of a machine of this type is disclosed in U. S. A particularly efiective construction and arrangement is in a machine having a rotary take-up, the take-up stroke of which imparts a movement transverse to the thread length in one direction and the give-upstroke of which imparts-a transverse movement to the thread in the opposite direction. In its; preferred form, the tensioning device consistsbf a friction plate and a cooperating thread engaging block having surfaces arranged within the plane of rotation of'the take-11p and ofjsaid trahsversethread movement and yielding-means acting at one end of the plate nearest which the thread passes during the give-up stroke of the take-up to cause'maximum tension to be applied to, the thread during the give-up stroke When the thread'passes along the surfacestowards the other'end of the plate, the effect of the yielding means is continuously reduced'until a, position is reached where little or no tension is imparted to the threa'd. The only adjustment to be made is in the tension of the spring 26 and once this is set by rotation of the thumb nut 28, no further changes are needed.
The nature and scope of the invention having been indicated and a particular embodiment thereof having been specifically described, what is claimed is:
1. In a sewing machine having a hook needle and a take-up acting to take up and give up thread and to move the thread transversely of its length, a tensioning device constructed and arranged to impart a variable tension to the thread, variation of which is controlled by transverse movement of the thread between the takeup and the work.
2. In a shoe sewing machine having a hook needle and a take-up, the take-up stroke of which imparts transverse movement to the thread in one direction and the give-up stroke of which imparts transverse movement to the thread in the opposite direction, a tensioning device constructed and arranged to impart a variable tension to the thread, variation of which is controlled by the transverse movement of the thread between the take-up and the work to increase the tension when the thread is moved transversely in one direction and to reduce the tension when the thread is moved transversely in the opposite direction.
3. In a sewing machine having a hook needle and a take-up acting to take up and give up thread and to move the thread transversely of its length, a tensioning device between the take-up and the work including a block and a plate having cooperating thread-engaging surfaces between and along which the thread moves, and yielding means near one end of the plate for exerting a varying pressure through the plate on the thread as it moves along said surfaces in a direction transversely of the length of the thread.
4. 6. A shoe sewing machine having, in combination, a hook needle, a take-up comprising a rotary member arranged to move in a circular path, a thread engaging member on the rotary member acting to take up and give up thread to the needle and to impart transverse movement to the thread between the take-up and give-up strokes, and a tensioning device for the thread between the thread engaging member and the work including a friction plate and a cooperating thread engaging block having surfaces arranged within the plane of rotation of the thread engaging member to enable movement of the thread along the plate during actuation of the take-up, a stud loosely supported by the block secured to one end of the plate nearest which the thread passes while being given up by the take-up, and yielding means acting on the stud to impart greater friction to the thread when located nearer the stud than when passing between the plate and block at a greater distance from the stud.

A shoe sewing machine having, in combination, a hook needle, a take-up comprising a rotary member arrranged to move in a circular path, a thread engaging member on the rotary member acting to take up and give up thread to the needle and to impart transverse movement to the thread between the take-up and give-up strokes, and a tensioning device for the thread between the thread engaging member and the work including a friction plate and cooperating thread engaging block having surfaces arranged within the plane of rotation of the thread engaging member to enable transverse movement of the thread along the plate during actuation of the take-up, yielding means acting at one end of the plate located at a position to impart greater friction to the thread while being given up than while being taken up by the takeup, and a thread uide 'forlim'itlng; transverse movement of the thread; while being taken up.
