This invention relates to Yan improved temporary bolting device.
' The prime object of the present invention pertains to the provision of an improved bolting device operative for electively drawing together and temporarily bolting metal parts such as steel sheets and plates preparatory to permanently uniting such metal parts as by riveting.
In riveting together steel plates in building various metal structures, it is the practice to draw together and secure the metal plates or sheets at a plurality of points by means of bolting-up devices inserted through the registering holes in said plates that later serve for the riveting operation. These devices temporarily hold the plates together and are later replaced by rivets. Various devices have been used for this temporary bolting operation. These have ranged from large power operated machines to small hand or finger operated so-,called caps, depending upon the character of work to be performed. Ordinary bolts and nuts have also been used, but the latter requiring as they doy very inconvenient manipulation from both sides of the plates, have proved unsatisfactory. Power operated machines are cumbersome and unwieldy' for general work; and the smaller units'are only adaptable for very thin sheets and, therefore, have a limited application. v'
'Ihe prime object of my present invention relates to the provision of a temporary bolting device of the small unit and manually operated type which is usable with ordinary ubolts but which may be completely handled or operated from one side of the plates or sheets to be secured. A corollary object of the invention relates to the provision of such a bolting device which constructionally meets the major requirements met with in practice, such as s'erviceability with plates or metal parts having a wide range of thicknesses, the ability to be used in quantity for agiven piece of work, simplicity of construction and certainty of functioning, and the ability, of being applied to and removed from the work with great rapidity, in addition to being capable of being used with ordinary bolts and manipulated from one side of the assembled work.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my invention is directed to the provision of a temporary bolting device such as is sought to be defined in the appended claims and described in the following specification taken together with the annexed drawing, in which: i I
Fig.l l is a vertical elevational view withiparts shown'in section of oneyform ofthe temporary bolting device 'of the present invention, depicting the manner of its use'and vshowing the same in the initial position when applied to the work; Fig. 2 is'a similar view ofthe same and showing the'same in anal position when applied to 'thworm j Fig. 3 isa perspective view lof the gripper memberofthedevice; y
Fig; 4 isv a perspective view on 'a reduced scalfe of the'bolting device of Figs."1 and 2; andl Fig. `5 is a view'corresponding to Fig. 2,'but showing'a modied structure of the device.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing and having reference rst to Figs. 1 to 4 thereof, the temporary `boltingdevice `of the invention comprises a unit generally` designated asA, intended and adapted to Abe lused With-bolts', 'such as`B for Adrawing'rtogether and temporarily se-Y curing in drawn-'together conditionfa4 plurality of metal parts such as 'the' metal plates v or sheets .generally designated as C' at the registering riveting 'openings l0 Vof these plates. "A plurality of bolts such as' B are loosely inserted fromv the-'back of the plates through these registering openings and a plurality of bolting devices A are applied to the Work by being placed-in the position shown Ain Fig. l ofthe drawing and are then Wholly `manipulated from thefrontv side of the 'plates to draw up the bolts B land thereby. draw together the plates C; securing 'these plates in theb'olted'- Aup condition as Shown `in Fig'. 2 of the drawingkj, v 4
The bolting device vA"co'mprise's anelongated hollow casing generally fdesig'nated as l2 for mounting and housing the operatingparts, an operating lmember generally designated as llifrol tatably mounted at the top of thecasing rI2"`and a grippingmember generally designated 'as I6 in said casing suspendedly mounted from theop erating member. 'The casing l2, besides defin-v ing the means for supporting and housing the Aoperating member I4 and the gripping member I6, forms a hand hold for therdevice, the outer Wall of the same being knu'rled as at I8 for this purpose. The operating member-l #and the gripping member I6 as welly as'the' casing l2 are so related and so constructed that upon'rotation of the operating member in; one direction, the gripping member-is caused to engagethe thread 20 of the bolt'vB and to draw the bolt to draw up and secure the plates C' together, and upon ro+ -tationofthe oaperating member i4 in theopposite direction, the gripping Amember I6 is caused to disengage and release the bolt B.v i
The hollow casing I2 is preferably made cylindrical in form and is shaped to provide a top internally threaded end 22, a bottom preferably anged, surface engaging end 24, an external finger-hold wall 26, and an internal camming wall 28, the camming part of which consists of an inclined shoulder 30 formed between the main body of the casing and the lower diameter enlarged part of the casing, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2,.
The operating member I4 comprises a threaded stem 32 which mates with the casing threaded end 22 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the` the stem 32, rotation of the ngerpiece. llllfuidcf-v tioning to rotate the stem and thereby threadedly move the same longitudinally off .thelcasingl be# tween the descended and elevated positions shown respectively in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
'I'he gripping V,member YI Gais s uspendedlymount.- ,ed from the-bottom `end of the operating stem .32 sol that the =lattermay be rotated relatively to thefprmer, Aand Athe said Igripping.member comprises two laterally movable jaws 3.6 and 38 adapted to engage'the threads 20' of the bolt B and provided with the lateral extensions ,-4.0- and IIZ adapted to be engaged and'.disengagedl by the camming wall 30 of the casing when -and as the said gripping member is =movedlong i.udinally of the casing, engagement causing the -jaws to-contract laterally and ,disengagement-permitting the jaws to expand laterally. The'jaws .t6-'and 38 are internallygthreaded', and when madeA of a stamping,l may be bodily threadedY asl clearly shown` in Figs. l, 2 and-3 of the drawing, for eilecting eiicientengagement with Vthe threads' 2B of thebolt` B over a substantial vportion ofthe lensthof. the bolt. The grippingmember lris suspendedlyfmounted in the operating member: 32 to permitirse rotation of the latter* relatively to the former, by loosely rveting'the circular. top portionfM. of .the gripping member I6 to the stem 3.21.15 means. of the Arivet element 46". In` assem., bling theV operating .member and thev gripping member to the casing, this rivetingstep maybe used asithe last stepof the assembling operation;
It isdesi-red to effect an initial .gradualfengagement. and drawing u'p of the bolt Band anv operation of fthe parts sothat when-finallybolted up, theplates fare drawn together and-secured tightly andgeifectively.' To'this end; the partsare constructed to permit a substantial longitudinal movement .of thefgripping member Tas Vbetween the position of Fig.-Y 1 andthe position of 'Figi-2, .the initial engagement `'with' the threads.: of' 'the bolt B beingthe loose receptive engagement shown in Figi and the: final engagementbeing the thread locking one shown in Fig-2. V-In-.the' rst position the lower ends of the vjaws 36 and 38 may protrude a substantiall distance from the lower opening 45 of 'the casing I 2'; and in the second position lateral extensionsl and 42v of the gripping. member, after having passedV the camming shoulder 30, are tightly-inrengagement with the reduced wall of thecasing-asbest shown in Fig. Zof the drawing.. -v
In Fig. 5of' the drawing, I-show.l a-somewhat modified' structure off-the device inwhich the gripping member is mounted on-r4 and assembled withthe operating member by'means of a separate screw instead ofv by being riveted thereto, so` thatif desired, the partsamay be more'readily disassembled and maybe assembled-"without a riveting operation. The Lpar-tsof the device shown in Fig. 5 are otherwise the same and are designated by similar but primed reference characters. The mounting of the gripping member IB' to the stem 32' of the operating member I4 is by means of a screw 48, the head 50 of which engages the circular top 44' of the gripping member and the shank of which is centrally received by the stem 32', the threaded terminus 52 of the screw having the lock nut 54 applied thereto loosely enough to permit rotation of the operating` member I4' relative-'to the gripping member I6'.
The operation and use of the temporary bolting device described will be apparent. 'Ihe device is a small unit as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. Withy theV parts in position as shown in Fig. l, the devicenis placed over the threaded shank of ythe bolt B, inserted loosely through the plates C.
The iingerpiece 34 is then rotated to move the operating member I4 to the position shown in Fig. v2 of the drawing, while the casing I2 is held .by Ytlfie-rigers ofthe user. Thecasing I2 isJ thereby moved into engagement withthe top one of the plates C,.whi1ethe gripping member I6 moves uplongi-tudinally within the casing. 'Ihe resilient gripping jawsk 36v and 38 of the gripping member at -rst loosely engage the threadsof the boltB and gradually move into gripping engagement, this gripping being. increasingly rml-y eiected as .the lateral projections .40 and .42 of the gripping jaws move. over the cammingV shoulder 39 of the casing.. At this time the plates have `been drawn together, the bottom end'24` of the casing being firmly seated onthe top one of the'plates C. The ufinal.incremental turn of the operating member causes the parts to iinally assume the position ,shownA in Fig. Zwith the plates in firmly bolted condition. By reverse rotation of thejoperating member, the ungripping and releasing of the bolt maybe quickly eiiected. By means of this'simple construction,v all ofthe advantages set forth hereinabove areF obtained.
