1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewing appliances for use in conjunction with sewing machines, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for holding buttons, snap fasteners, et cetera, to facilitate the attaching thereof without danger of the operator injuring his or her fingers.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a holder of the aforementioned character which is adapted to accommodate various sizes of buttons and snap fasteners.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a sewing appliance f the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoin and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a sewing appliance constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the device in use.
Figure 2 is a top plan View thereof.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional View, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view, stantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail view in perspective of one of the substantially channel-shaped gripping jaws or arms.
Figure 6 is a detail view in perspective of one of the toothed fabric engaging bars.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a pair of opposed, coacting, substantially channel-shaped jaws of suitable dimensions and material, preferably metal.
It will be observed that the jaws I taper toward one end. The large end portions of the jaws I taken subare pivotally connected at 2. It will also be noted that one of the jaws I is secured within the other of said jaws.
Bars 3, also of suitable material, preferably metal, are mounted longitudinally on the free end portions of the jaws I on the outer sides thereof. The bars 3 comprise toothed lower edges 4 which extend below the jaws l for engagement with the fabric, as at 5.
It is thought that the manner in which the device is used will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the button 6 or other fastener to be sewed to the fabric 5 is engaged between the jaws l where it is frictionally held. It will be observed that the construction and arrangement is such that buttons and other fasteners of various sizes may readily be inserted between the jaws. The toothed bars 3 are then engaged with the fabric 5 with the button 6 positioned beneath the sewing machine needle 1. The sewing machine is then driven with one hand applied to the usual fly wheel thereof while the other hand of the operator holds the appliance for feeding or manipulating the button beneath the needle I.
It is believed that the many advantages of a sewing appliance constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A sewing appliance of the character described comprising a pair of opposed, coacting jaws pivotally connected at one end, said jaws being substantially channel-shaped in cross-section for receiving a button therein and frictionally gripping said button therebetween, and toothed bars on the free end portions of the jaws engageable with the material to which the button is to be sewed, said jaws tapering toward their free ends.
