1 Claim.
This invention relates to street signs.
An object of this invention is to provide a street sign which is readable both by day and night.
A further object of this invention is to provide a street sign of the character described having trafilc stop and go lights, directional signs, and parking signs, all at different heights or levels on a stanchion or post.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a street sign of the character described employing a plastic transparent sign on which directional words are painted or otherwise marked, and illumination behind the sign, so that it may be seen at night time as well as during the day.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a street sign of the character described in which the traffic light housing, the directional signs and the parking signs are removable for cleaning and replacement.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable street sign of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a street sign embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, ill designates a street sign embodying the invention. The same comprises a base II, and a metal tube l2 fixed thereto and upstanding therefrom. Tube l2 has outer screw threads l3 at its upper end.
Said tube is furthermore formed, below the upper end thereof with a plurality of pairs of flat recesses l5 at different levels. The recesses in each pair are at right angles to one another. Said tube is formed with'a pair of screw threaded holes IS in each recessed surface l5 thereof.
Placed against one recessed surface l5 of each pair is a parking sign 20 fixed in place by bolts or screws 2| passing through suitable openings in the sign and screwed in openings IS. The parking signs may thus be at different levels and in different angular directions.
Screwed to the upper threaded portion I! of tube or pipe I2 is a hollow member 22 having a tubular portion 23 formed with vertical wings 24 extending at right angles to one another. Tubular portion 23 has an internally screw threaded portion 25 at its upper end for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
Each wing 24 has a vertical slot 26 extendin to its upper end, but terminating short of the lower end thereof and of dove-tailed crosssection.
Mounted on each wing is a directional sign 21. Each sign 2'! is made of transparent plastic material such as Lucite, Plexiglas, Vinylite or the like hard material.
The sign 2'! has an arrow head shaped portion 28 at its outer end. It has parallel side walls .29 and is open at the bottom. It is thus formed with a chamber 30 which extends to its inner end. At its inner end it has a portion 3| of dovetail cross-section slidably received in slot 26 of wing 24. The lower edge of portion 3| rests on the bottom of slot 26 as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
To close chamber 30 there is Provided a cover 34 formed with flanges 35 contacting the lower edges of side walls 29, and meshing with a flange 3la on said end portion 3|, and fixed thereto by screws 31.
The signs 21 may have directional words and numbers painted or otherwise applied to the outer surfaces of side walls 29. These words and numbers can b easily read during the day, and also at night when the sign is illuminated, both by the light transmitted through the transparent walls of the sign and windows 29, the latter being useful when red and green lights are used as in a dim-out.
Screwed to the top threaded portion 25 is the usual trail'lc stop and go light housing 50. The wiring 5| therefor also passes down through member 22 and pipe I2.
It will be noted that housing 50, as well as signs 21 and 20 may be disassembled for cleaning and replacements I It will thus be seen that ther is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted meet the conditions of practical use. i
As various possible embodiments might bemade of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:'
A street sign comprising a post, a hollow member secured to the upper end of the post having a pair of hollow wings, each wing having a vertical slot of dove-tail cross-section, a directional sign of transparent plastic material mounted on each wing, each directional sign comprising a top wall, and parallel side walls having display matter on the external surfaces thereof and being open at the bottom, and forming a chamber extending to the inner end thereof, a flanged cover closing the bottom of said chamber, and said directional sign having at its inner end a portion of dove-tail cross-section received in said slot, said side walls being formed with pairs of window openings,
terminalswithin said chamber at the ends of said window openings, fluorescent bulbs in said chamber engaging said terminals and wiring for said terminals passing through said chamber, wings and tubular post.
