UNITED s jrA'Ii-:s4 PA'iiiN'l foFFlcE This invention relates to unique improvements in a lawn mower blade sharpener.
One of the main objects of this invention is to provide an efilcientl and inexpensive device for sharpening the blades of lawn mowers and the like, which device is arranged to be held in the hand and to be conveniently drawn along the edge part of the blade for quickly sharpening the same.
Another object of this invention is to provide such a sharpening device whichis sturdily built and is also economical in its construction, can be conveniently manipulated, and will render eilicient service for an extended period of time.
A more particular object of this invention is to provide such a sharpening device which is provided with several abrading members, whereby to sharpen the edge as well as remove the burr from the blade, and wherein these members are arranged so as to be adjustable in order to place different parts of the members into active position and they are also readily removable and replaceable, whereby to greatly extend the period of efflcient utility of this device.
' These and various other objects and purposes 4and advantages are attained with this invention,- Vas will become apparentfrom the following description, taken in connectionv with the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention in its preferred form, it being evident that other arrangements and forms of construction may be adopted lin carrying out the objects and purposes of this invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view illustrating this -invention in one-of its forms of construction, showing the operative side thereof. 1
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof,y taken on line 2-2 of Fig.41.
Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 4 is la cross-sectional view, taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2, also showing a part of a blade in connection with the Sharpener.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the abrading members.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the 'guide member which is eiIective in properly guiding the sharpener along the blade.
This sharpening device, in the form illustrated herein, comprises a main member or supporting member il whereon the several abrading members are mounted. This member il is substantially block-shaped and is arranged to be held in the hand; and it preferably includes a block I2 of hard wood which contains a flat operative handle I4 on the other side opposite said side I3. Said handle Il is detachably mounted yon the block, as by screws I5 or the like, to facilitate adjusting and mounting the various members of this device. i
The abrading means orI abrading members used in this illustrated device comprise a pair of abrading members I6 which are mounted spaced apart on said side I3, said members being arranged and adapted to abrade and act upon the narrowed vedge part l1 ofthe blade I8 of a lawn mower and the like, as indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawing. Said abrading members further comprise a member I9, which is mounted between the two members I6 herein, and it projects from said side I3 and acts on the side of the blade adjoining the edge part Il1 being effective in straightening said side and removing any burr that may be formed thereon.
These abrading members I6 and I9 herein are preferably provided in the form of at files, substantially as indicated in thedrawing, which are readily and inexpensively obtainable; and they are mounted on the operative side I3 of the block so as to allow for moving and adjusting and also for reversing the files. so as to place and to utilize different parts of each le on the device for sharpening action. The mounting means used herein thereforefinclude adjustable holding elements or members, being shown herein as a pair of hook-bolts 2l for each ille I6, each having a shank part extending thru the block I2 and being provided with a nut 22 for securing the bolt and drawing the file firmly down onto the face I3 of the block. The member I9 is set partly into the block and -extends partly outward from the face la, as best shown in Fig. 4; and herein this block I2 is preferably made in two parts or halves,
as illustrated, while one half may be provided with a slight groove for better receiving this file I9 therein. Screws or elements 23 are used to force these two parts of the block tightly together and to permit separation thereof when desired.
A guide member 2| is also provided herein, and it is preferably in the shape of a plate or strip of metal which has its, intermediate part placed against the file I9 seated between the two halves of the block, and Ahas a locking toe or ange 25 turned against the inward side of the block, to positively retain this member 24 in place. The outer part 28 of this plate is bent or slanted away from the file I9, so that the beveled or slanting side-.or face Ia whereon the abrading members` edgegpart l1 01 the blade I8 Will fit Properly beand reversed. being thus enabled to be turned end-ior-end and likewise edge-for-edge, so as to utilise at least four diiIerent portions oi.' the fila for sharpening action. 'I'he guide member 24 can then likewise be removed and renewed if necessary.
l The tiles Il can similarly be reversed, by releasing bolts Il, and they can furthermore-be adjusted lengthwise toward either side of the block. as indicated by dot-and-dash lines at Il in Pig. l. so as to bring different parts of these illes into use in the sharpening operation.
This blade sharpener can thus b e readily and economically constructed, and is also convenient in operation for quickly and eiliciently sharpen, ing the blades of lawn mowers and the like.
I claim: y
l. A lawn mower blade Sharpener comprising a supporting member having a substantiallyA ilat side and a pair of illes spaced apart on said side to act nthe edge of the blade, a ille mounted be# tween said pair and projecting beyond them from said side to act on the side of the blade, means for mounting said files adjustably and replaceably on said member to bring diii'erent parts of said. files into action, a guide plate projecting from said member adjacent said projecting ille and cooperating therewith in guiding the sharpener along the blade, and means on said member for operating it by hand.
2. The subject matter set claim in claim 1. wherein the projecting ille is a ilat double-faced ille, and the supporting member is a block o! two halves detachabiy secured together, holding said ille and the guide plate therebetween,.and said ille isjreversible end-'i'or-end and edge-ior-edge in said block. Y
3. The subject matter set forth in claim l, wherein all the tiles are iiat double-faced ones and they are reversible on tbe member.
4. A lawn mower blade sharpener comprising a block-shaped member carrying abrading means on one side thereof. means for mounting the abrading means on said side so as to have its iongitudinai axis positioned transversely of the block and enable moving said means longitudinally ior adjusting'the same transversely of the block and place dierent parts oi the abrading means into active position, a me extending longitudinally or vthe block and being mounted adjustably and reversibly to extend a short distance beyond said side and said abrading means, to act on the side o! the blade. and guide means mounted adjacent said nie and cooperating therewith for guiding the sharpener, said guidemeans being positioned to bear on the slanting edge part of the blade and urge the blade against said ille duringv the sharpening operation.
5. A lawn mower blade sharpener comprising` a supporting member having handle means on one side and a plurality ot nles mounted spaced apart on the opposite side adapted to act on slant from said one side and said projecting illev and cooperating with the latter for guiding the Sharpener along the edge of the blade.
