This invention relates to overall chains or girdies for the pneumatic tires of road vehicle wheels. More particularly it. consists of improvements in chain or girdle shoes of the kind com prising a transverse tread portion with side flaps pivoted thereto. Shoes of this kind are described in my prior patent specifications Nos. 2,095,523 and 2,283,264.
The present invention has for its main object to provide an improved shoe for these overall chains or girdles, which shoe is self-cleaning and not liable to be packed by mud, stones or snow in use. Another object is to provide a shoe which obtains an efiective grip on bad terrain.
A. further object is to provide a shoe with fore and aft transverse elements which are spaced apart but at their ends are separated by wearing pieces located intermediately of the fore and aft elements,
A still further object is to provide supports for the ends of transverse elements of the shoe, which supports form oppositely inclined seatings for said ends. Other objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention is now described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the shoe comprises two twisted elements l and 2 extending trans versely of the tire T, the latter being for example of the size kntwnas. 15.00 by 20 inches: the elements are made of twisted metal ribbon, substantially rigid longitudinally and provided with flat extremital tabs or tab pieces 3, 3 and 4, 4 respectively These tabs are secured upon the exterior of oppositely inclined seatings 5, 5 formed by the angular sides of outer channel pieces I, 8 at the ends of the shoe. The oppositely inclined seatings 5, 6 formed by the angular sides of the outer channel pieces are shown set at 45 degrees to the central plane of the shoe, these sides constituting with the dependent channel flanges l0, engaged by the hinge pin l2, and the hinge portions 13 of the side flap I4, a triangulated structure which provides a rigid support for the adjacent ends ofv the twisted elements I and 2. The said inclined seatings extend away from the tire T, so as to flaps M, which are secured to the hinge pins l2- These side flaps are linked together along each side of the tire by retaining chains 15 (see Fig. 5) in the manner known from my prior patent specification No. 2,283,264. i
The side flaps are shown provided with partcircular stop pieces H, to limit the inwards movement or" the hinged side flaps, these stop pieces being welded at I'l to the dependent flanges In. and recessed to fit the rib I4 on the side flap, but these stop pieces I! form no part of the present invention.
The shoe also comprises inner channel pieces formed with parallel side walls 18 and a central web 19. These side walls are apertured at I8 near their ends remote from the web It so as to receive the hinge-pins i2. The. web I9 of each inner channel piece bears. against the underside of the web H. of the corresponding outer channel piece I or 3 and is rigidly secured thereto, as by rivets 20.

The two twisted elements I, 2 secured on their oppositely inclined seatings 5, 6 are located fore and aft of the metal wearing pieces H, which as stated are secured by rivets 20 upon the middle webs H, is of the outer and inner channel pieces.
The separation of the two twisted'elements l, 2 of each shoe by a distance equal to the width of the web l l of the outer channel piece renders the twisted elements self-cleaning in use so that they do not become packed or bridged by mud, stones or snow under difiicult operating conditions. It also facilitates the connection of the attachment tabs or lugs to the channel pieces by rivets or the Fig. 4 shows the bridge-like shape of each outer channel section piece 1 or 8, with its angular sides or ramps 5, 6 leading inwardly from the central web H to the end sides or flanges l0. Its shape is that of five contiguous sides of an the construction according to the present invention, not only are two twisted elements employed, but their extremital tab pieces are secured to the oppositely inclined seatings 5, 6 and not to webs parallel with the axes of the hinge pins.
What I claim is:
1. In a non-skid device comprising a plurality of shoes with side chains connecting said shoes around a wheel, a shoe including two twisted elements made from metal bars, an attachment tab piece being formed at each end of each said twisted element, lateral bridge pieces extending fore and aft of the transverse center line of said shoe, said bridge pieces forming seatings for said attachment tabs, each of said bridge pieces having its two seatings angularly inclined oppositely to one another and towards the fore and aft edges of said shoe, and means for securing said attachment tabs externally upon said seatings.
2. In a non-skid device comprising a plurality of shoes with side chains connecting said shoes around awheel, a shoe comprising two substantially rigid twisted metal elements arranged in parallel relation, attachment tab pieces at both ends of said twisted elements, and lateral supports for said twisted elements, said supports ineluding bridge pieces withexternal faces forming seatings for said tabs, said seatings being angularly inclined in opposite directions in relation to the transverse center line of said shoe and converging outwardly of the circumference of the wheel,

In a non-skid device of the character described, a shoe comprising two parallel twisted elements with attachment tabs at both ends of said twisted elements and channel section members arranged laterally of the wheel, said channel section members being each of semi-polygonal shape including a web and oppositely inclined ramps leading inwardly from said web in directions fore and aft of the transverse center line of said shoe, and said tabs being secured to the exterior faces of said inclined ramps.
4. In a non-skid device of the character described, a shoe comprising two parallel twisted elements with attachment tabs at both ends of said twisted elements and channel section members arranged laterally of the wheel, said twisted elements being arranged transversely of said shoe andfore and aft of the center of said shoe, said channel section pieces being each of bridge shape with a central web and oppositely inclined ramps leading inwardly from said web, said tabs being secured to said oppositely inclined ramps, and metal wearing pieces secured upon said central webs intermediately of the said fore and aft twisted elements.
5. In a non-skid device comprising a plurality of shoes with side chains connecting said shoes around a wheel, a shoe having two spaced apart twisted metal elements arranged transversely of the wheel and in fore and aft relation to the center of said shoe, attachment tab pieces formed at both ends of each said twisted element, a channel section member arranged at each side of said shoe, said member having a central web and oppositely inclined seatings, the attachment tabs of said fore and aft twisted elements being secured to said oppositely inclined seatings, and inner supporting channel pieces having their webs secured under the webs of said first mentioned channel section members.

In a non-skid device comprising a plurality of shoes with side chains connecting said shoes around a wheel, a shoe having two twisted metal elements arranged transversely of the wheel and in fore and aft relation to the center of the shoe, attachment tab pieces formed at both ends of each said twisted element, a channel section member arranged at each side of said shoe, said member having a central web and oppositely inclined seatings to the exterior of which the attachment lugs of said fore and aft twisted elements are secured, and said inclined seatings being set at 45 to the central plane of the shoe.

A shoe for an overall non-skid chain comprising a tread portion formed of two parallel twisted metal ribbons adapted to be set across the tire tread and having extremital flat tab pieces, a channel section member at each end of the said tread portion, hinge pins mounted in the flanges of said channel section members to support the side flaps for the side connecting chains, said channel section members each having a web and side walls intermediate between said flanges and said web, said side walls being oppositely inclined in relation to said web, and an inner channel section member located inside each said channel section member, said hinge pins passing through the flanges of said inner channel section members, the webs of said inner channel section members bearing against the webs of said first mentioned channel section members, and said flat tab pieces of said twisted metal ribbons being respectively secured upon said oppositely inclined side walls of said first mentioned'channel section members,
