O. L. BISHOP WELL PUMP 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 Filed June 10, 1941 m m M r I k Z n 7 0 I Aim-m 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 I Inventor UZWZZZeJeebzlskO/z Attorney April 25, 1944. o. L. BISHOP WE'LL PUMP Filed June 10, 1941 Patented Apr. 25, 1944 UNITED STATES t l -WENT I OFFICE WELL PUMP Orville Lee Bishop, Wendell, Idaho Application June 10, 1941, Serial No. 397,469
(Cl. 1ll36) 1 Claim.
A11 of the foregoing, and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the housing in vertical section.
Figure 2 is a view principally in vertical section through the lower portion of the apparatus.
Figure 3 is a detail view in vertica1 section, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a view in vertical section through the loWer portion of the air pump.
Figure 5 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, reference character I designates a housing or enclosure. The housing I may be of any suitable material and dimensions. In the embodiment of the invention what has been illustrated, the housing is positioned at the top of the well 2.
Mounted on the housing is a suitable pump operating mechanism 3. Extending from the pump operating mechanism 3 through the housing I into the well 2 is a casing 6. Mounted in the housing I is a storage tank 5. A suitable power plant 6 is mounted on the housing I and drives the pump operating mechanism 3 through a belt and pulley connection I. A pressure operated switch 8 on the storage tank 5 controls the power plant 6.
Mounted in the casing is a rod 3 which is actuated by the pump operating mechanism 3. Swivelly connected at It! to the lower end of the pump rod 9 is a plunger rod Ii. A pair of cup washers I2 are adjustably mounted on the threaded lower end portion of the plunger rod II, said cup washers being operable in a cylindrical lining I3 in the lower portion of the casing l. Mounted between the cup washers I2 is a rubber expander I4. An adjusting nut I5 is provided above the upper cup washer I2.
Threaded on the lower end portion of the casing 4 is a cast head It which is formed to provide chambers I1 and I3, said chambers communicating with each other through a passage I3. A tube 20 is threaded into the lower portion of the chamber I! of the head I6. Operable in the tube 20 is a sucker rod 2| which is connected by a coupling 22 to the plunger rod The tube 20 extends downwardly into the well and is provided, on its lower end, with a suitable pump or working barrel which is actuated by the sucker rod 2|.
Mounted on the head I6 is an air pump 23. The pump 23 includes a cylinder 24 which is threadedly secured to the head It and which communicates with the chamber I8 through an angular passage 25 in said head. Mounted in the lower end portion of the cylinders 24 is a rubber seat 26 with which a spring seated ball check valve 21 is engageable.
Operable in the cylinder 24 is a plunger comprising cup washers 28 which are adjustably mounted on the lower end portion of a rod 29. Adjacent its lower end, the casing 4 has formed therein a vertical slot 39. Mounted on the rod II and projecting horizontally therefrom are arms 3| which are operable in the slot 30 and which terminate at their outer ends in eyes 32. The rod 29 extends upwardly above the cylinder 24 and passes through the eyes 32 in which it is secured by nuts 33. It will thus be seen that the air pump 23 is connected to the rod I I for actuation thereby. A block 34 is mounted between the arms 3| and travels in the slot 30.
Threaded into the lower end portion of the chamber I8 of the head I6 is a suitable relief valve 35. Threaded into the upper end portion of the chamber l8 and rising from the head I6 is a discharge pipe 36. The upper end of the pipe 36 is connected to the storage tank 5. Interposed in the upper portion of the pipe 36 is a check valve 31.
It is thought that the operation of the apparatus will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. On the upstroke of the sucker rod 2|, the plunger comprising the elements II and I2 moves upwardly, at the same time raising the plunger of the air pump 23. The cup washers I2 prevent the water from passing upwardly in the casing 4. Of course, the
fluid may rise to the level of the lowermost washer I2. The fluid flows through the passage l9 into the chamber [8. On the downstroke of the sucker rod 2| the fluid above the level of the passage I9 is forced therethrough into the chamber l8 and at the same time air under pressure from the pump 23 is forced into said chamber l8. The fluid and air are forced upwardly through the discharge pipe 26 past the check valve 31 into the storage tank 5. A rubber expander 38 is provided on the rod 29 between the cups 28.
It is believed that the many advantages of a well pump constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the apparatus is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A well pump of the character described comprising a casing, a plunger operable in said casing, a mechanical pump operating unit operatively connected to the plunger for actuating the same; a head at the lower end of the casing, a tube depending from said head; a suction plunger mounted in the bottom end of said tube to draw water therein, a sucker rod operable in the tube and head connecting the plunger and suction plunger together; a liquid discharge pipe connected to the head; arms on the plunger operable in a vertical slot in said casing; an air pump mounted on the head and secured to the arms for actuation by the plunger, the air from the air pump to discharge into the liquid discharge pipe, and a storage tank connected to the discharge pipe for receiving water and air under pressure therefrom.
