My invention relates to sine Vises.
It has among its objects to provide an improved sine vise. A further object is to provide such an improved vise whereby the use of the same is markedly facilitated and whereby the range of selected angles and angular positions is substantially increased. Another object is to provide such an improved device adapted to clamp in the vise substantially larger work than heretofore possible while eliminating all need for providing the additional angle iron and other clamps heretofore required. A further object of my invention is to provide such a sine vise having a new construction and arrangement of rolls with respect to the clamping mechanism, whereby the above results are obtained. These and other objects and advantages of my improvements will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.

In the form shown in Figures 1-5, I have shown a sine vise including a base member I having on the upper face thereof a fixed jaw 2 and a cooperating movable jaw 3 adjustable longitudinally of the base member by an operating member 4 journaled in a fixed abutment 4a and adjusting the jaw 3 through suitable telescopic threaded connections 5, herein of the shrouded type described in my .copending application Serial No. 369,631, filed December 11, 1940, now Patent No. 2,320,606, granted June 1, 1943; transverse rolls 6 being provided at opposite ends of the bottom of the base I, together with longitudinal rolls I, hereinafter described.
Referring more particularly to Figure 2, it will be noted that the longitudinal rolls 'I-are disposed along each longitudina1 edge of the-bottom'of the base I. Herein, eachlongitudinal edge of the latter is longitudinally grooved throughout its length, as shown at 8, and the rolls 1 are seated therein and suitably attached to the base I by screws 9, herein longitudinally spaced from each other along the rolls 1 and extended diagonally upward through the rolls and into the base, as illustrated in Figure 3. It will also be noted that the rolls I extend substantially throughout the length of the base I while terminating short of the rolls 6 and extending into adjacency to the latter. 'As sho wn the ends of the rolls 1 toward the operating member 4 extend in thegrooves 8 along opposite ends of a short sloping cut away'portion' I0 leading to the ad jacent roll 6 and centrally located with respect to the latter, so that spacer blocks II may still be disposed in thiscut away portion Ill and under this end r0116, as illustrated in Figure 5. It will also be notedthat transversely extending oppositely sloping cut away partions I2-arealso provided in the bottom of the base member I and leading to the grooves 8, herein substantially midway between the ends of the rolls -'I, in such manner as to expose the latter rolls between their ends and also permit spacer blocks I3 to be disposed in supporting relation beneath either of these rolls, as, for example, illustrated in Figure 4. Attentionis also directed to the fact that the ends of the rolls 6 only extend slightly over the ends of the rolls 1 and herein terminate substantially short of the center lines of the latter rolls. Thus, unobstructed corner spaces I4 are'provided at'the ends of one transverse roll 6, while'the grooves 8 herein also extend along the base I in such manner as to form like unobstructed spaces Ma'at opposite ends of the other roll 6.
" In the use of my improved construction, in addition to the usual angularpositions made possible by the use of therolls-B when the sine vise is supported on a suitable support, as, for example, a magnetic chuck face l5, it will be apparent that either longitudinal side rall I may be supported on suitable'spacer blocks I3 at any selected angle with respect "to the ;chuck face.
Further, due to the cutting'back of the rolls .6, the latter in no way obstruct the new .use of the rolls I as described, while,stillenabling'the'rolls 6 to continue to be used asheretofore.
As a result of my improvements, it willalso be apparent that long work may be readily clamped in the vise jaws as shown in Figure 4,- in-a convenient position tofbeoperated upon as, for'ex ample, by a grinding wheel or other'tool. Further, it will be noted-thatmy improved construction in thus making the jaws of the viseavailable to clamp such work in this new relation, also makes it possible to eliminate all necessity for using the angle irons, heretofore clamped in the vise jaws, when operating on long work, as well as any need for the additional clamps for clamping the work to the angle irons in a position longitudinally of the vise and at one side of the latter.
In Figure 6, I have illustrated a modified construction which may be used if desired. In this construction, it will be noted that each longitudinal roll 1 extends substantially throughout the length of the bottom of the base I. More particularly, one end l6 of each roll 1 extends substantially to the end of the base I adjacent the operating member 4 while terminating suiiiciently short of that end of the base to enable that extremity of the roll to be protected b the base, the adjacent roll 6 also being suitably shortened in thi construction. The other end ll of each roll I is also preferably cut oil at 45, as illustrated, and the adjacent transverse roll 6 is similarly cut oif at l8, with the two adjacent bevelled 'ends I? and [8 brought into adjacency butnot necessarily into contact, as illustrated. Obviously, this construction may be used in the same general manner as that heretofore described while using the longer longitudinal rolls 1 and still protecting the ends thereof and maintaining both transverse rolls 6 of such length as not to interfere with the use of the rolls 1.
It will be understood that, if desired, either form of my improved construction may be used in connection with a sine plate, as distinguished from a sine vise, the plate then, of course, being rovided with the usual holes to permit clamping usual in connection with the use of-such sine plates. While I have shown cylindrical roll members, it will be understood that I contemplate the use of members of any other suitable cross section adapted to permit the base to be rolled or pivoted about a portion of their periphery.
While I have herein specifically described two embodiments which my invention ma assume in practice, it will be understood that the same have been shown for purposes of illustration, and that the invention may be modified and embodied in other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sine vise having a base, clamping jaws on the upper face thereof including a jaw movable lengthwise of said base, transverse rolls at opposite ends of the bottom of said'b'ase, and longitudinal rolls extending along the longitudinal edges Of the bottomof said base, one of said transverse rolls terminating short of said longitudinal rolls and the other having bevelled ends disposed in adjacency'to like bevelled ends on the adjacent end of said longitudinal rolls.
2. A sine vise havin a base clamping means on the upper face thereof including a jaw movable lengthwise of said base, transverse rolls at opposite ends of the bottom of said base, and longitudinal rolls extending along the longitudinal edges of the bottom of said base, one of said transverse rolls terminating short of said longitudinal rolls and the other having bevelled ends disposed in adjacency to like bevelled ends on the adjacent end of said longitudinal rolls. said clamping means including an operating member at one end of said base and said first mentioned transverse roll being adjacent said operating :member and the second mentioned transverse roll at the opposite end of said base.
3. A device such as described comprising a rectangular base, a vise structure on the upper surface of the base having a fixed jaw at one end of the base and a rotary member for effecting vise adjustment located adjacent the opposite end of the base, and means rigidly attached to the base at its under surface which provides for mounting the base on a supporting surface at an inclination to a vertical longitudinal plane or to a transverse vertical plane, said means including lon roll members underlying the base along the longitudinal sides and short roll members underlying the base adjacent the other sides.
4. A device such as described comprising a rectangular base, a vise structure on the upper surface of the base having a fixed jaw at one end of the base and a rotary member for efiecting vise adjustment located adjacent the opposite end of the base, and means rigidly attached to the base at its under surface which provides for mounting the base on a supporting surface at an inclination to a vertical longitudinal plane or to a transverse vertical plane, said means including long roll members underlying the base along the longitudinal sides and short roll members underlying the base adjacent the other sides, said short roll members having their ends extended over the long roll members but to a limited extent only.
5. A device such as described comprising a rectangular base, a vise structure on the upper surface of the base having a fixed jaw at one end of the base and a rotary member for eflecting vise adjustment located adjacent the opposite end of the base, and means rigidly attached to the base at its under surface which provides for mounting the base on a supporting surface at an inclination to a vertical longitudinal plane or to a transverse vertical plane, said means including long roll members underlying the base along the longitudinal sides and short roll members underlying the base adjacent the other sides, said base being provided at points intermediate of the ends of the long roll members with cutaway portions on its under surface sloping toward said long roll portions.
6. A device such as described comprising a rectangular base, a vise structure on the upper surface of the base having a fixed jaw at one end of the base and a rotary member for effecting vise adjustment located adjacent the opposite end of the base, and means rigidly attached to the base at its under surface which provides for mounting the base on a supporting surface at an inclination to a vertical longitudinal plane or to a transverse vertical plane, said means including long roll members underlying the base along the longitudinal sides and short roll mem bers underlying the base adjacent the other sides, said long roll portions being accommodated in rabbets or grooves along the sides of 'the base so as to be approximately flush with the lower surface of the base.
7, A device such as described comprising a rectangular base, a vise structure fixed upon the upper surface of said base having a fixed jaw at one end of the base and a rotating adjusting screw projecting beyond the opposite end of the base in overhanging relation thereto, and means at the under surface of the base providing for the tilting thereof in either direction in a longitudinal vertical plane so that the base can be supported from either end in an upwardly inclined position, said means including a short roll member received in a rabbet or recess at rectangular base, a vise structure on the upper surface of the base having a fixed jaw at one end of the base and a movable jaw adapted to be moved toward and from the fixed jaw, and longitudinal roll members positioned in recesses along the longitudinal sides of the base so as to lie substantially flush with the bottom of the base, the under surface of the base being provided with cutouts sloping to the roll members 10 intermediate of the ends of said members.
