9 Claims. (01. 4-454) This invention relates to improvements in toilet flushing mechanism.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of an attachment adapted to be used in connection with'water closets and flush tanks therefor having means associated therewith which will efficiently and automatically insure the flushing action.
Other'objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts thruout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a flush tank and bowl associated therewith having the improved attachment connected as a part thereof.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view showing the manner of mounting the seat upon the bowl for cooperative connection with the improved flushing attachment.
Figures 3 and 4 are cross sectional views taken substantially on their respective lines in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Figure 5 is a horizontal cross sectional View taken thru the improved attachment substantially on the line 55 of Figure 4.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown only a preferred embodiment of the invention, the letter A may generally designate a flush tank adapted to be associated with a water closet :bowl B in any approved and conventional arrangement which will admit of the association of the improved flushing attachment C of this invention.
The tank A may be mounted upon a wall Ill and has a pipe H leading therefrom to the bowl B. The flushing mechanism within the tank A may be of conventional character and preferably includes a valve l2 which regulates the flushing of the water thru the pipe ll into the bowl B. The valve 12 may be of the ball or cup type and has a lift rod l3 connected therewith and leading upwardly thru the flush tank to a point of im- To that end the seat D at each side of the rear end thereof is provided with hinge bars or members I 6, pivoted at IT. At their rear ends they are slotted at l8 for connection with the strip or piece I4 and more particularly the laterally extending lugs or screws 20 connected in the end of the strip M, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings. Centrally upon the rear end of the seat D there is provided an apertured ear or extension to which a lift rod 2'! of the attachment C is connected.
Referring to the attachment C, the same comprises a casing of rectangular shape adapted for exterior detachable connection upon the tank A. In the preferred instance the casing 39 is provided with angle clips 3| at opposite ends thereof adapted for detachable connection :by screws 32 upon the top wall or cover 33" of the tank A, as shown in Figure 1. The tank 30 is relatively small and compact and of course may be detachably connected upon the top wall or cover to suit the leverage and trip needs of the attachment C.
A pair of lever supporting angles 33 and 34 are detachably and adjustably connected by screws 35 upon the floor wall 36 of the casing 30; the latter being provided with an inverted U-shaped wall construction 40 defining a chamber M thru which the angle pieces 33 and 34 extend. These angle pieces are slotted at 42 to permit of their forward and rearward adjustment. At their outer ends they are suitably notched to pivotally receive the spindle ends 45 of a lever 55. The lever at its forward end has a swivel or pivot connection 5| with the upper end of the lift rod 21. At its rear end the lever 56 extends into the compartment 4| and is provided with an adjustable spring seat 5| which may be slid therealong to the proper point, depending upon the adjustable positioning of the supporting angles 33 and 34. This seat 5| is provided with an upwardly extending link 53 having connection at 54 with a trip lever 55. The latter is pivoted at one end, at 55, and at its opposite end it is pointed and slightly hook-shaped for trip connection with one end of a lever 65. The lever 60 is pivoted at 6| and at its opposite end has a flexible connection 62 with the flush rod 13.
A compression spring 63 is mounted upon the seat St and engages the inside of the top Wall at the casing portion 40 for normally urging the forward or outer end of the lever 50 upwardly in order, to elevate the seat D, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The trip lever will then be in the full line position shown in Figure xi. The flush rod lever has a spiral coil spring H mounted at the pivot point thereof to normally maintain the lever 60 in the neutral position, shown in full lines in Figure 4 of the drawings. This coil spring H can be dispensed with if desired. However, it will insure a more accurate operation of the device.
With the parts arranged as shown in Figure 4, when weight is placed upon the seat D, thru the lift rod 2'1, the forward end of the lever 59 will be pulled downward and the spring 63 compressed. The trip lever 55 will be thrown to the dot and dash line position shown in Figure 4 of the drawings. The lever 69 of course will permit the free end of the trip lever 55 to pass the same, and the coil spring H will bring the is released from the seat D, the spring '63 will throw the rear end of the lever 50 downwardly and will pull the trip lever 55 to the full line position shown in Figure 4. As it swings thru the are shown by the dot and dash lines, the lever '60 will be thrown to the dot and dash line position shown in Figure 4. This will pull the flush valve I 2 off of its seat and permit the water from the flush tank to flush the bowl B.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that an eiiicient, relatively economical and highly adaptable form of trip mechanism has been provided for flush tanks which is capable of association with various shapes and sizes of tanks and bowls, with but little efiort needed to put into operation.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be made to the .form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
We claim:
1. In trip mechanism for water closet flush tanks and the like, the combination of a casing, means for attaching the casing to a flush tank, a pivoted flush valve attaching lever in the casing, a pivoted trip lever upon the casing adapted upon movement to trip the position of the first mentioned lever, a third lever, means pivotally mounting said third lever upon the casing for operation in a plane normal to the action of the first two mentioned levers, means connecting one end of the third lever to an intermediate portion of the trip lever, and spring means for urging one end of the third lever into a predetermined position.
2. In trip mechanism for water closet flush tanks and the like, the combination of a casing, means for attaching thecasing to a flush tank, a pivoted flush valve attaching lever in the casing, a pivoted trip lever upon the casing adapted upon movement to trip the position of the first mentioned lever, a third lever, means pivotally mounting said third lever upon the casing for operation in a plane normal to the action of the first two mentioned levers, means connecting one end of the third lever to an intermediate portion of the trip lever, spring means for urging one end of the third lever into a predetermined position, and spring means for normally maintaining the first mentioned lever in a neutral position for tripping action by the trip lever.
3. In trip mechanism for water closet flush tanks and the like, the combination of a, casing, means for attaching the casing to a flush tank, a pivoted flush valve attaching lever in the easing, a pivoted trip lever upon the casing adapted upon movement to trip the position of the first mentioned lever, a third lever, means pivotally' mounting said third lever upon the casing for operation in a plane normal to the action of the first two mentioned levers, means connecting one end of the third lever to an intermediate portion of the trip lever, and spring means for urging one end of the third lever into a predetermined position.
4. In trip mechanism for water closet flush tanks and the like, the combination of a casing, means for attaching the casing to a flush tank,
a pivoted flush valve attaching lever in the casing,
a pivoted trip lever upon the casing adapted upon movement to trip the position of the first mentioned lever, a third lever, means pivotally mounting said third lever upon the casing for operation in a plane normal to the action of the first two mentioned levers, means connecting oneend of the third lever to an intermediate portion of the trip lever, spring means for urging one end of the third lever into a predetermined position, and spring means for normally maintaining the first mentioned lever in a neutral position for tripping action by the trip lever.
5. In trip mechanism for water closet flush tanks and the like, the combination of a casing, means for attaching the casing to a flush tank, a pivoted flush valve attaching lever in the casing, a pivoted trip lever upon the casing adapted upon movement to trip the position of the first mentioned lever, a third lever, mean pivotally mounting said third lever upon the casing for operation in a plane normal to the action of the first two mentioned levers, means connecting one end of the third lever to an intermediate portion of the trip lever, spring means for urging one end of the third lever into a predetermined position, and means for connecting the outer end of the third mentioned lever with a movable part of a toilet bowl seat.
6. In a trip attachment for flush tanks and the like, the combination of a supporting casing, a trip lever pivoted on the supporting casing, a second lever, means for mounting the second lever intermediate its end upon the casing so that the action of the second lever is in a plane substantially normal to the movement of the trip lever and whereby the pivot axis of the second lever may be moved towards or away from the plane of action of the trip lever, means connecting the proximate end of the second mentioned lever with the trip lever, and spring means acting upon said levers to normally maintain them in a predetermined position.
7. In a trip attachment for flush tanks and the like, the combination of a supporting casing, a trip lever pivoted on the supporting casing, a second lever, means for mounting the second lever intermediate its ends upon the casing so that the action of the second lever is in a plane substantially'normal to the movement of the trip lever and whereby the pivot axis of the second lever may be moved towards or away from the plane of action of the trip lever, means connecting the proximate end of the second mentioned lever with the trip lever, spring means acting upon said levers to normally maintain them in a predetermined position, a flush lever pivoted intermediate its ends upon said casing having means at. one end for connection with a flush valve and its opposite end being interposed in tripping position with respect to the trip lever.
8. In a trip attachment for flush tanks and the like, the combination of a supporting casing,
a trip lever pivoted on the supporting casing, a second lever, means for mounting the second lever intermediate its ends upon the casing so that the action of the second lever is in a plane substantially normal to the movement of the trip lever and whereby the pivot axis of the second lever may he moved towards or away from the plane of action of the trip lever, means connecting the proximate end of the second mentioned lever with the trip lever, spring means acting upon said levers to normally maintain them in a predetermined position, a flush lever pivoted intermediate its ends upon said casing having means at one end for connection with a flush valve and its opposite end being interposed in tripping position with respect to the trip lever, and a coil spring for normally maintaining said flush lever in a predetermined position.
9. In combination with a flush tank, a toilet bowl, a seat for the toilet bowl, means hingedly connecting the seat over the toilet bowl so that the rear end of the seat will have a vertical swinging movement, a casing mounted upon the flush tank, a flush lever pivoted between its end upon the casing, means connecting one end of said flush lever with the flush tank valve, a trip lever pivoted upon said casing having an end interposed in tripping relation with the end of the flush lever opposite its connection with the flush valve connecting means, means to normally maintain the flush lever in a neutral position, a third lever, means carried by the casing for pivotally supporting the third lever upon the casing for action in a plane normal to the plane of movements of the first two mentioned levers. said last mentioned means having adjustable connection with the casing so that the pivot axis of the third lever may be moved to vary the leverage action of the third lever, means connecting one end of the third lever with said trip lever, spring means normally maintaining the trip lever and said third mentioned lever in a predetermined position with the outer end of the third mentioned lever upwardly, and a link connection between the outer end of the third lever and the rear end of the seat normally maintaining the latter elevated.
