Description
March 28, 1944. L. E. DELOGHIA HANDLING DEVICE Filed June 5, 1945 Patented Mar. 28, 1944 HANDLING DEVICE Louis E. Deloghia, Agawam, Mass., assignor to Perkins Machine and Gear Company, West Springfield, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application June 3, 1943, Serial No. 489,489
2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for handling heated objects.
The principal obj cts of the invention are directed to the provision of devices for handling containers of heated objects such as baskets used in connection with metal heating apparatus and operations.
In metal treating operations, it is customary to employ containers or baskets which contain metal objects to be heated. The baskets are deposited in a furnace and cranes or the like are used to remove the baskets from the furnace. The baskets are extremely hot and to protect the workmen according to this invention a combined hood and lifter is provided which is so constructed and arranged that the hood may enclose the hot baskets while lifting devices engage the baskets for lifting and transporting the baskets in the hood.
With the foregoin and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the device of the invention having a plurality of the containers or baskets associated therewith; and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the baskets shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
The novel device of th invention may be constructed for use in connection with various containers but in the form to be described, it is adapted for baskets such as 2 that has a perforated bottom wall 4- and lifting trunnions t at opposite sides. Guides 8 are provided near the upper edges of the baskets so that they may be superposed and held in stacked relation.
The device includes a hood I0 preferably cylindrical in shape and is open at its lower side while its upper side is closed at It. Preferably the hood will be made from sheet metal and a bale I4 is fixed to its upper side for engagement by the cable hook of a crane or the like.
The hood on opposite sides is provided with slots I6 that are open at their lower ends. The sides of the slots may converge upwardly and at the lower ends one side of each slot is formed to provide a hook I8 for engaging and hooking under the trunnions 6 of the baskets.
The hook portions of the hood may, if desired,
be reinforced by members such as 20 that are welded or otherwise secured thereto.
The bale I4 is engaged by the hook of a crane cable and the hood is lowered to surround a basket or a stack thereof. The slots 16 are such as to permit the trunnions 6 to pass upwardly therethrough as the hood is lowered around the basket or baskets.
The hook is rotated so that the hooks [8 may underlie the trunnions of the lowermost basket and as the hood is elevated the trunnions of the lowermost basket are caught in the hooks whereby the stack of baskets may be transported.
The hood will be so constructed and arranged as to enclose the desired number of baskets for transportin them and will eliminate the radiation of heat for the protection of the workmen.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variation as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claims are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A device for transporting heated object carrying baskets having trunnions at the sides thereof comprising in combination, a hood open at its lower side and closed at its upper side for lowering to encompass a basket or a stack of baskets, slots extending upwardly on opposite sides of the hood to permit passage of the trunnions of the basket upwardly therethrough as the hood is lowered relative to the basket, and a side of each slot adjacent the open side of the hood formed to provide a hook for underlying the trunnion of the basket.
2. A device for transporting heated object carrying baskets having trunnions at the sides thereof comprising in combination, a hood open at its lower side and closed at its upper side for lowering to encompass a basket or a stack of baskets, slots extending upwardly on opposite sides of the hood to permit passage of the trunnions of the basket upwardly therethrough as the hood is lowered relative to the basket, a side of each slot adjacent the open side of the hood formed to provide a hook for underlying the trunnion of the basket, and a bale secured to the hood for lifting the same.
