rlhis invention relates to devices intended to absorb the shocks caused by the ring of rifles and shot guns and similar firearms.
An object is to provide a device which is simple enough to warrant its application to the lower priced firearms, and yet sound enough in design to warrant use on high grade guns.
Another object of this invention is to provide a recoil vabsorber with a minimum number of parts consistent with proper functioning, and also to provide one that can be used without injury to the shoulder.
It is also an object to provide a recoil device that will stand the rough usage to which such devices are subjected.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Figure 1 is a view with portions broken away to reveal the arrangement of the component parts oi' the invention,

Figure 4 is a QO-degree projection of Figure l, and
Figure 5 is a section thru 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, I is the stock of an ordinary riiie or shot gun. The stock should be of a length substantially less than the conventional stock so as to accommodate the recoil device. When the recoil absorber is attached to a gun the resultant stock length should agree with that of a conventional gun so as not to interfere with the proper use thereof.
2 is a base plate adapted to screw to the stock I by screws 3, and which conforms in outline to the contour of the gun stock. Base plate 2 carries a sleeve 4 integrally staked to the said :base plate 2, and perpendicular thereto. This sleeve 4 is staked or otherwise suitably secured to the base plate at substantially the midpoint thereof. End 5 of sleeve 4 is closed so as to form an abutment for compression spring .6 which is of sufficient resistance to pro-vide the proper absorption of the force of the recoil.
Plunger I is a sliding t in sleeve 4 and abuts against compression spring E. Plunger 'I receives the full force of the recoil thru spring 6, and eX- tends beyond the end of sleeve 4 as shown in Figures l and 4. Plunger l contains a longitudinal slot Ill which allows the escape of the imprisoned air between the Abottom of the sleeve 4 and the end of the plunger 'I as the force of the recoil drives the sleeve 4 against the spring 6 'and ccmpresses the latter. The above mentioned imprisflmed air finally escapes to the outer air thru hole Sleeve 4 has elongated slots 8 which are disposed diametrically opposite each other. Plunger 'I has a pin '9 integrally itted in a hole therein and which pin is adapted to slide freely in the elongated slot 8. The function of pin 9 is to limit the outward movement of plunger 'I relative to sleeve 4, and to also prevent turning of the said plunger relative to the said sleeve. The extremity of plunger 1, which protrudes from sleeve 4 a suitable distance, terminates in a portion which is reduced in diameter so as to form a shoulder or abutment I 2. This abutment serves to receive the force oi the impact of the exploding shell, and which impact is distributed to butt plate I3.
Butt plate I3 is of metal or any suitable material, and has a boss I4 which receives the impact. In general shape, butt plate i3 conforms to the contour of the stock. To prevent butt plate I3 from turning about the axis of plunger 1, a pin I5 is inserted intermediate plunger 'I and boss Screw I6 is threadedly engaged in plunger 'I and set into a counterbore in butt plate I3. Screw I6 also secures plunger l, pin I5, and butt plate I3 in one integral unit, and thereby facilitates assembling and disassembling.
Filler pad Il may be of sponge rubber or other resilient material, and conforms to the contour of the stock so as 'to continue the lines of the stock uninterruptedly to the cover plate IS. Hole II in the ller pad II allows the escape of air which is trapped by plunger 1.
Pins I8 in base plate 2 serve as dowels to prevent the said filler pad I'I from being dislocated from its norma] position between the said base plate 2 and :butt plate I3. Filler pad I1 is further secured in place by cementing to the said base plate and said butt plate, with shellac or any other suitable adhesive.
Cover plate I9 is of the conventional design and may be of hard rubber or other non-metallic material, and may be corrugated to prevent slipping when placed against the shoulder. This plate Ig is secured to the butt plate I3 by screws 2D.
In assembling the recoil absorber, the unit comprising the sleeve 4, spring 6, plunger l, pin 9 and base plate 2 is secured to the gun stock by screws 3; sleeve 4 being inserted in a hole in the gun stock I. Sponge rubber ller pad I'I is then cemented to the base plate 2. Butt plate I3 is then placed on plunger 1 and against shoulder I2; pin I5 is placed in the hole provided intermediate plunger 'I and boss I4, and screw I 6 then secures the butt plate I3 firmly in place, and prevents it from turning. Cover plate I9 is then placed on the butt plate I 3 and fastened by screws 20.
Although I have disclosed only one specific embodiment of my invention, I do not imply a limitation thereto but claim all reasonable equivalents which are embraced by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A recoil absorber for firearms comprising a base plate, a cylindrical sleeve containing a longitudinal slot, said sleeve passing thru said base plate and integral therewith, a plunger slidably disposed in said sleeve and protruding therefrom,
means integral with said plunger and coacting with said longitudinal slot to limit the extent of sliding movement of said plunger relative to said sleeve and to prevent relative turning about the axes of said sleeve and said plunger, a resilient compression member disposed within said sleeve and urging said plunger outwardly from said sleeve, a butt plate integral with the said protruding end of the said plunger and in spaced relation to the said base plate, and a compressible ller member intermediate the said base plate and said butt plate. v
2. A recoil absorber for firearms comprising a base plate having a centrally disposed aperture, a cylindrical sleeve secured in said aperture and having a plurality of diametrically-disposed slots, a plunger slidably-disposed in said sleeve and protruding therefrom, a pin passing diametrically thru said plunger and engaging said longitudinal slots and limiting the sliding movement of said plunger and preventing the turning thereof, a resilient member disposed within said sleeve and urging said plunger outwardly from said sleeve,
a butt plate secured to the protruding extremity of said plunger and a resilient ller member disposed intermediate the said base plate and said butt plate.
3. A recoil absorber for rearms comprising a cylindrical sleeve having one extremity closed and the other extremity open and provided with a plurality of longitudinal, diametrically-opposed slots, a base plate having a centrally-located hole, the open extremity of said sleeve secured in said centrally located hole, a plunger slidably disposed in said sleeve and protruding therefrom, a pin passing diametrically thru said plunger and engaging said longitudinal slots thereby allowing a limited sliding movement for said plunger and preventing turning thereof, a resilient member in said sleeve urging said plunger outwardly from said sleeve, a butt plate secured to the protruding portion of said plunger and a resilient iiller member interposed between the said base plate and said butt plate. f
4. A recoil absorbing stock for firearms comprising a gun stock containing a longitudinal hole, a cylindrical sleeve inserted in said hole and protruding therefrom and provided with a plu` rality of diametrically-disposed longitudinal slots, a base plate secured to said stock and having a hole into which the said protruding end of said sleeve is secured, a plunger slidably disposed in said sleeve and protruding therefrom, said plunger containing a longitudinal vent groove, a pin passing diametrically thru said plunger and engaging said longitudinal slots and limiting the sliding movement of said plunger and preventing axial turning thereof, a compression spring disposed in said sleeve urging said plunger outwardly from said sleeve, a butt plate secured to the protruding portion ofV said plunger and a yieldable filler member interposed between the said base plate and said butt plate, the said ller member having an aperture to allow the escape of trapped air.
