(ci. i3-1s) i -4 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in casting rods, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising unique mechanical means whereby longer and more accurate casts may be made with less eiort.
Other objects of the invention arerto provide a mechanical casting rod of the aforementioned character which will .be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly emcient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing andstilllfurther objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a 'study of the following specification, takenin connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a casting rod constructed in accordance with the present invention. Y
Figure 2 is a. view in vertical longitudinal section through the device.
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation with a portion broken away in section, showing the device ready to make a mechanical cast.
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view, taken subot Figure 1.-
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view, taken lsubtantially on the line 5 5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section, showing another form of the invention. l l
Figure 7 is an enlarged view in vertical longitudinal section through a portion of the modification.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be -seen that reference numeral I designates a tubular rod of suitable length, diameter and material. Mounted longitudinally on one end portion of the rod I is an elongated handle 2. The handle 2 has extending thereinto from its forward end Ia socket, or bore. lwhlch accommodates the rod I'. o Artubular, tapered arm 4 is hingedly mounted at 5 on the forward end portion of the rod I for swinging movement in a vertical plane. Coacting latch elements 8 on the hingedly connected ends of the rod I and the arm 4 releasably secure the latter in longitudinal alignment with the former.
A wire rod 'I is operable in the tubular rod I and is pivotally connected at 8 to the hinged end operable in slots I5 which are with the tubular rod tubular rod I.
portion of the arm 4. A head 9 is fixed on the rear end of the rod I for sliding movement in the tubular rod I. The rod 'I is slidable through an abutment III in the tubular rod I. The abutment I 0 is spaced forwardly from the rear end ofthe A coil spring II, which is under tension at all times, encircles the wire rod 'I betweenv the members I I) and 9 for actuating the arm 4 and for tudinal alignment with the tubular rod I.
A trigger I2 is pivotally mounted at I3 in the handle 2 for engagement behind the head 9 (see Fig. 3) for holding the arm' 4 in an angular position through the medium of the rod I when a mechanical cast is to be made. A coil spring I4 is engaged with the trigger I2 for engaging said trigger behind the head 9.
provided therefor in the tubular rod i, and the lower portion of the handle 2. i
It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, when a manual cast is to be made in the usual manner, the arm 4 is permitted to remain in longitudinal alignment I, in which position it is secu-red by the coacting latch elements 6 with the assistance of the coil spring II. When a mechanical cast is to be made, the arm 4 is swung upwardly on the hinge 5, thereby disengaging the latch elements 6 and pulling the wirerod 'I forwardly for compressing the spring I I. When the head 9 clears the trigger I2, the spring I4 engages said trigger behind said head. As the cast is made, the trigger I2 is pulled and disengaged from the head 9. The coil spring I I then actuates the arms 4 through the medium of the wire rod v'I for swinging the arm 4 forwardly and ldownwardly in a manner to materially increase the distance of the cast. The adjacent ends of the members I and 4 `are provided, respectively, I8 and II. The closure Il is slotted to accommodate the pivotal connection 8 of the wire rod l. The closure I6 is slotted for the passage of the Wire rod 1.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawings, there is shown a handle I8 of the type comprising adrop reel seat I9. 'A trigger 20 is pivotally mounted at 2| in the rear leg of the reel seat I9.V Forwardly of the reel seat i9, a secondary trigger or dog 22 is pivotally mounted at 26 in the handle I8 for engagement behind the-head 9. A flexible strand`23 operatively connectsl the trigger 20 to the secondary trigger or `dog; 22 for actuating the latter to inoperative yieldingly holding same in longi- The trigger I2 is position against the tension operable trigger of its coil spring 2d.- The flexible strand 23 is operable in a passage 2% which is provided therefor in the handle i8. In other respects this modification ,is substantially similar in construction and operation to the embodiment illustrated in Figures l to 5, inclusive, of the drawings.
It is believed that the many advantages of a casting rod constructed in accordance' with the present invention will be readily understood, and although preferred embodiments of the device are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood ,that further modifications-and changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A fishing pole comprising a tubular rod, a handle on one end portion of said rod, an arm hingedly mounted on the other end of the rod, a member operable in the rod and pivot-.ally connected to the arm for actuating same in one direction, and a coil connected to said member for`actuating same.
Z. A fishing pole oi' the character describen comprising a tubular rod, a handle on one end portion` of said rod, an arm hingedly mounted on theother end portion of the rod, an operating rod slidable in the first-named rod and pivotally connected to the hinged end portion of the arrn, a coil spring in the tubular rod operatively connected to said operating rod for actuating same for swinging the arm in one direction, a manually in the handle for releasably securing the operating' rod against movement under the inuence of the coil spring, and means for reieasably securing the arm against swinging movement on the tubular rod.
spring in the rod operatively lmounted on 3. A fishing pole of the character described comprising a tubular shaft, a handle on one end portion of said tubular shaft, an arm hingediy the other end portion of the tubular shaft, a rod operable inthe tubular shaft and pivotally connected to Ahe hinged end portion of the arm, an abutment in the tubular shaft, the rod being slidable through said abutment, a head on one end portion of the rod, a coil spring mounted under tension between the abutment and the head for actuating the rod for swinging the arm in one direction, and a manually operable, spring-pressed trigger pivotaliy mounted in the handle. and engageable with the head for releasably securing the rod against actuation by the coil spring.
A fishing pole of the character described comprising a tubular shaft, a handle on one end portion of theV tubular shaft, said handle including a drop reel seat, a tubular arm hingedly mounted on the other end portion of the shaft, a rod operable in the shaft and pivotally connected to the hinged end portion of the arm, a head on the rod operable in the shaft, a coil spring vin. the shaft engaged with the head for actuating the rod for swinging l manually operable trigger pivotally mounted on the reel seat of the handle, a spring-pressed secondary trigger pivotally mounted in the' hantending strand `operable in the passage and operatively connecting the 'first-named trigger ond-named trigger.
