The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in casting rods, and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character comprising unique mechanical means whereby longer and more accurate casts may be made with less eiort.
Other objects of the invention arerto provide a mechanical casting rod of the aforementioned character which will .be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly emcient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing andstilllfurther objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a 'study of the following specification, takenin connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be -seen that reference numeral I designates a tubular rod of suitable length, diameter and material. Mounted longitudinally on one end portion of the rod I is an elongated handle 2. The handle 2 has extending thereinto from its forward end Ia socket, or bore. lwhlch accommodates the rod I'. o Artubular, tapered arm 4 is hingedly mounted at 5 on the forward end portion of the rod I for swinging movement in a vertical plane. Coacting latch elements 8 on the hingedly connected ends of the rod I and the arm 4 releasably secure the latter in longitudinal alignment with the former.

A trigger I2 is pivotally mounted at I3 in the handle 2 for engagement behind the head 9 (see Fig. 3) for holding the arm' 4 in an angular position through the medium of the rod I when a mechanical cast is to be made. A coil spring I4 is engaged with the trigger I2 for engaging said trigger behind the head 9.

It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, when a manual cast is to be made in the usual manner, the arm 4 is permitted to remain in longitudinal alignment I, in which position it is secu-red by the coacting latch elements 6 with the assistance of the coil spring II. When a mechanical cast is to be made, the arm 4 is swung upwardly on the hinge 5, thereby disengaging the latch elements 6 and pulling the wirerod 'I forwardly for compressing the spring I I. When the head 9 clears the trigger I2, the spring I4 engages said trigger behind said head. As the cast is made, the trigger I2 is pulled and disengaged from the head 9. The coil spring I I then actuates the arms 4 through the medium of the wire rod v'I for swinging the arm 4 forwardly and ldownwardly in a manner to materially increase the distance of the cast. The adjacent ends of the members I and 4 `are provided, respectively, I8 and II. The closure Il is slotted to accommodate the pivotal connection 8 of the wire rod l. The closure I6 is slotted for the passage of the Wire rod 1.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawings, there is shown a handle I8 of the type comprising adrop reel seat I9. 'A trigger 20 is pivotally mounted at 2| in the rear leg of the reel seat I9.V Forwardly of the reel seat i9, a secondary trigger or dog 22 is pivotally mounted at 26 in the handle I8 for engagement behind the-head 9. A flexible strand`23 operatively connectsl the trigger 20 to the secondary trigger or `dog; 22 for actuating the latter to inoperative yieldingly holding same in longi- The trigger I2 is position against the tension operable trigger of its coil spring 2d.- The flexible strand 23 is operable in a passage 2% which is provided therefor in the handle i8. In other respects this modification ,is substantially similar in construction and operation to the embodiment illustrated in Figures l to 5, inclusive, of the drawings.
It is believed that the many advantages of a casting rod constructed in accordance' with the present invention will be readily understood, and although preferred embodiments of the device are as illustrated and described, it is to be understood ,that further modifications-and changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A fishing pole comprising a tubular rod, a handle on one end portion of said rod, an arm hingedly mounted on the other end of the rod, a member operable in the rod and pivot-.ally connected to the arm for actuating same in one direction, and a coil connected to said member for`actuating same.
