No. 234,417. Patented Nov. 16,1880.

NTTED STATES PATENT @Errea JANE MERRIAM, OF MILWAUKEE, VISGONSIN.
COVERING FOR STEAMPIPES,`&,C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,417, dated November 16, 1880. Application filed September 17, 1880. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern .Be it known that I, JANE MERRIAM, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coverings for Steam-Pipes, Boilers, Src.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof'.
My invention relates to steam boiler'and pipe covering, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 isa side View ofa portion ot' my improved covering with its Various layers exposed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof, and Fig. 3, a like section of the casing with which I propose to cover steam-pipes before they are placed in the logs used by the Steam Supply Company. Fig. 4 isa gasket, which I propose placing about the pipe and between the ends of the logs.
The casing F is of wire-gauze generally, and is iilled with mineral wool, the sides being held'apart by braces of wire c, bent into a series of connected Us, as shown in Fig. 2, and in uprightpipes these braces may be quartered and placed in various parts of the covering to prevent the mineral wool from falling down and packing, and to prevent the ,wool from falling through onto the pipe I place a layer ot' asbestus paper, C', between the wool and inner wall,D, ofthe casing. This casing alone makes a complete covering, but it may be found expedient at times to interpose a layer of paper, C, and wire-gauze B between itand the pipe.
After the casing is on I secure its edges together by double-pointed tacks b, or by wires a passed about the whole.
In placing the sections of my covering I may interpose between each of them a gasket, Fig. 4, of wire-gauze filled with mineral wool,
but I generally propose to interpose it between the ends of the logs used by the steamsupply and about the pipes which are inserted therein, but it will be found useful wherever great heat is to be encountered. Of course, instead of making the easing F of wi regauze, I may make it of sheet metal without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The sections are all made in the shop and shipped complete in such shape that an unskilled workman may put them on, and when on I propose to wrap it with cemented canvas.
I am aware that incombustible and nonconducting material has been placed about boilers, pipes, Ste., and bound to them by wiregauze, and such I do not claim.
WhatIdo claim as my invention isl. In a covering for pipes and boilers, a casng of wire-gauze filled with mineral wool and adapted for being placed about the pipe or boiler and secured thereon, substantially as described.
2. In a covering for pipes, boilers, te., a casing ot' wire-gauze iilled with mineral wool, having a layer ot' asbestus between the wool and its inner wall, and adapted to be placed about a pipe or boiler, as set forth.
3. In a covering for pipes, boilers, 85e., a casing Jlilled with mineral wool, in combination with bracing-Wires c for holding the walls apart, as set forth.
4. A gasket composed of mineral wool encompassed by wire-gauze on all sides, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of August, 1880.
JANE MERRIAM.
