Description

| v. LUCEIA March 14, 1944. I
COMBINATION PRESSING AND STEAMIIIG IRON File'd Aug. 16, 1940 17 INVENTOR.
\' IIIIIIIIIIIIIII' Patented Mar. 14, 1944 COMBINATION PRgllsggllfgG AND STEAMING Louis V. Lucia, West Hartford, Conn., assignor to The Silex Company, Hartford, Conn., a corporation of Connecticut Application August 16, 1940, Serial No. 352,926
2 Claims.
This invention relates to combination steaming and pressing irons and more particularly to electric hand pressing irons from which steam is ejected upon the work so as to dampen the same while it is being pressed. 4
In steam irons such as heretofore used, it has been customary to eject the steam from a plurality of localized jet openings. confines the application of the steam to a small area of the work surface and does not permit it to spread out for a suiiicient area, under the surface of the iron, to cover the entire'surface of the work.
\ Other such pressing irons have been constructed with numerous jets spread out on the surface of the iron and connected by means of ducts. In such instances, the ducts and.jets are subject to accumulation of sediment therein, from foreign matter in the water used to generate the steam, and often become clogged to a degree which renders the iron inoperable as well as dangerous to ,use.
An object of this invention therefore, is to provide, for a steaming iron of the character described, novel means whereby the steam ejected therefrom may be applied to cover the surface of the work.
A further object is to provide such an iron having steam ducts in the surface thereof for spreading the application of the steam upon the work surface.
A still further object is to provide an iron having such means and which may be economically produced,
Further objects of the invention will be more clearly understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawing in which- I I Fig. 1 is a view of a steam iron embodying my invention, with parts thereof being shown in central vertical section.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view in elevation.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged bottom view of a portion of the sole plate, the steam distributing chamber cover removed therefrom Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view in vertical-section inlinellofFig.2.
As illustrated in the drawing, y improved steam iron may comprise a casing 5, having a steam chamber 5 therein, to which steam may be supplied, or in which water may beheated to.
This, however,
The said plug may have steam jet apertures i3 therein, in a surrounding wall which forms a sediment, or condensate retaining recess it. A
surrounding flange I5 is also provided on said plug and fits within a recess in the sole plate to position the screw plug so as to permitproper clearance for the passage of steam over the said surrounding wall and into the jets l3.
The present invention is particularly intended 10. to provide steam distributing means in the form 15 to a direction away therefrom, in order to provide proper distribution of steam along the full length thereof and communicate with the steam chamber In by means of steam ports I] which lead from the bottoms of said grooves to a portion in the said steam distribution chamber above the top of the screw plug I 2.
It will be noted that the screw pl s I! may be easily removed for accessibility in cleaning the steam passages and all surfaces of the steam distributing chamber, and that my invention further provides steam distributing grooves in the sole plate which open upon the surface of the work and are so arranged as to spreadout the application of the steam to the surface of the 30 work material without interruptions and thereby permit an even and unbroken application of steam to said work over an area of practically iron.
i. In a steaming iron of the character described comprising a casinghaving asteamchamber therein, a sole plate having an ironing surface, the steam distributing chamber in said sole 46 plate communicating with said steam chamber, and a removable cover forming the lower wall,
of said distributing chamber; the combination of 'open groovesun said ironing surface and apertures in said the: each communicating with said as steam distributing chamber for distributing steam therefrom upon a surface being ironed.
2. A steaming iron of the character describedcomprising a casing having a steam chamber therein, a sole plate, a steam .distributing cham- 6 her in said sole plate communicating with said steam chamber, and means comprising a plurality of open grooves in said sole plate communicatingwi saidsteam chamberandadetachable plug fo the lower wall of said disss tributing chamber and having apertures therein for delivering steam to a surface being ironed.
