This invention relates to hat boxes for mens hats and the like articles.

Heretofore, hat boxes usually required at least a string securing means of some kind to keep the cover on the body of the box and to enable the person carrying the box to grasp the string. Furthermore, hat boxes as heretofore made comprised a body having a bottom wall and an annular wall extendin the full height of the box. The covers of such boxes have flanges which frictionally fit onto the open end of the box, but because of the height of the body, the annular wall was not sufficiently rigid to provide a strong frictional grip with the cover, so that the cover would easily become loose and had a tendency to slip off. Furthermore, such boxes could not be grasped with one hand.

It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a hat box shaped and prepared in such a way that it may be gripped in one hand by a person carrying the box, and in which the cover will remain firmly frictionally fitted onto the body without tendency to slip off, thus obviating the necessity for strings.

It is a further object of the present invention to provide a more conveniently carried hat box by making the brim protecting portion of the hat box with an inclined surface on either the top or bottom portion thereof, or on both surfaces.

A further object is to provide a hat box with pressed in portions to permit the fingers to be inserted in the opening for obtaining a more positive grip on the hat box when being carried with the hand.

Further and other objects may be and may become apparent to one skilled in the art from the drawing and a perusal of the specification.

The hat box embodying the invention, as shown in the drawing, is more or less hat shaped, having a brim receiving portion and a crown receiving portion. Said hat box comprises a body 8 and a cover 7 frictionally fitted thereon, as explained hereinafter. The body 8 comprises a crown portion .9 and a brim portion I0, formed with an annular flange 2. The crown portion 9 has at its lower end, an outwardly extending lip l I engaging and adhered to the brim portion it by any suitable adhesive. Said crown portion may be somewhat frusto-conical in shape, if desired, as illustrated in the drawing.

The brim portion I0 may be inclined outwardly and away from the cover 1, for the purpose hereinafter appearing. The cover 1 comprises a flat wall 13, from which there extends an annular flange l4 frictionally fitted within the wall [2. If desired the flange 14 may frictionally receive the annular flange 12.

It will now be understood that a hat may be received within the box, the brim of the hat being received between the cover I and the brim portion 19 of the body, and the crown of the hat being received within the crown portion 9. Since the flange i2 is relatively short, it has enough rigidity to make a good frictional contact with the flange l6 of the cover 1, so as to prevent the cover from accidentally slipping off. Furthermore, the box may be carried by grasping the brim receiving portion of the box, so that the box may be held with one hand.

Since the closure has a good purchase or frictional fit into the flange 12 of the body of the box, no strings or other securing means are necessary to keep the cover fitted onto the box.

In view of the fact that the wall Ill is inclined, the brim receiving portion of the box may be held in one hand without danger of the box accidentally slipping out of the carriers hand.

The view in Fig. 3 shows a flat wall l3 of the cover I, while the view in Fig. 6 showsthe Wall l5 of the cover as concave. The concavity need only be slight so that the inner distance between the upper brim cover and base will be shorter than the distance therebetween at the outer peripheral edge thereof.

The partial section in Fig. 4 shows the pressed in portion it forced slightly away from and inwardly of the upper brim cover to permit the fingers to grip the opening adjacent portions. While the press in portion It has a general single curve as shown in Fig. l, the cut or perforated form ll may be shaped to intimately receive the fingers, which modification may be desirable for certain type hat boxes.

Single or double inwardly inclined surfaces may be used for the brim protecting upper and lower surfaces to insure a better grip when the package is being carried, and the pressed in portions are desirable for internal finger grip on the upper portion Hi.

What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A hat box having a brim receiving portion and a crown receiving portion, and comprising a body, and a cover fitted thereon, said body having a crown portion and a brim portion extending outwardly from the crown portion, said brim portion being formed with an annular flange, and said cover having an annular flange frictionally fitted with the annular flange of the brim portion of the body, said brim portion being inclined outwardly and away from the cover, said brim receiving portion being thinner adjacent the crown than at its outer periphery, said brim portion being formed with pressed in portions to provide a finger grip.

A hat box having a brim receiving portion and a crown receiving portion, and comprising a body, and a cover fitted thereon, said body having a crown portion and a brim portion extending outwardly from the crown portion, said brim portion being formed with an annular flange, and said cover, having an annular flange frictionally fitted with the annular flange of the brim portion of the body, said brim portion being formed with pressed in finger grip portions.

A hat box having a brim receiving portion and a crown receiving portion, and comprising a body, and a cover fitted thereon, said body having a crown portion, and a brim portion extending outwardly from the crown portion, said brim portion being formed with an annular flange, and said cover having an annular flange frictionally fitted with the annular flange of the brim portion of the body, said brim receiving portion being thinner adjacent the crown than at its outer periphery, the bottom wall of said cover being concave, inwardly.
