To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRA E. DAVENPORT, of Mechanicsville, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Sled-Brakes, ot' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates io a brake for bobsleighs; and it consists in a novel arrangement of levers and devices connected therewith, whereby the brakes are applied to the front sled by the momentum of the rear sled when the speed of the team is checked or when holding` back in going downhill.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure l is a bottom view of a bobsleigh provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is va longitudinal vertical sectional View of the same.

A represents the front sled, and B the rear one. A2 is the front bolster, and B2 the rear one, which are connected by two reaches, C C. The rear bolster is connected to the raves b b of the rear sled by hinge or eye joints c c. The front bolster is connected by a bolt, d, to a board, E, which lies parallel with the runners of the front sled and rests on the beams a t2 a3, which connect said runners. Near the ends of the board E are slots c e, in which work bolts D D, projecting upward from the beams a and a3, and said board is held down to its place by two clips, f f, passing into said bea-ms a a3. rlhe board is thus allowed to slide longitudinally on the beams without being displaced upward. In order to prevent too much wear of the contiguous surfaces, they may be faced with metal plates g.

One arm of each lever J is pivoted to the under side of the board E, and the other arm is connected by a rod, K, with one arm ot' a vertical elbow-lever, L, having its fulcrum on the inner side of the sled-runner, and having its other arm terminating in a dog, l, which constitutes the brake.
When the speed ofthe team is slackeued or when holding back in descending a hill the momentum ofthe rear sled, B, acting through the reaches C O and sliding board E, causes a forward movement of the long arms of the levers J J, a backward movement of their short arms and of the long arms ofthe elbowlevers L L, and a downward movement of the short arms of said levers L L, so as to cause the dogs l to catch in the road and thus brake the sled.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sled-brake attached to the front sled of a bob-sleigh, consisting of elbow-levers L, provided With dogs l, and connected with a 1011- gitudinallysliding board, E, actuated by the momentum of the rear sled through the bolsters and reaches connecting said front and rear sleds, substantially as herein described.
