Application February 17, 1942, Serial No. 431,285
(Cl. 1GO-242) 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a roller window screen and has for its primary object a screen carried by a spring roller and operatively attached be tween the usual form of window casing and the slidable sash thereof for the purpose of automatically positioning the screen covering the opening of varying sizes when the window is moved to its open position in the window frame.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a Window screen normally mounted upon a roller whereby the screen is automatically extended during the window opening operation and re-rolled upon the roller out of use when the window is returned to its closed position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an automatically operated Window screen adapted for use with any width of window and being of simple construction and inexpensive to manufacture as well as serviceable and advantageous wherever a window screen is required, and having adjustments furnished to accommodate diierent lengths of window screen ready for use and detachably mounted upon the window frame.
With these general objects in view and those that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a window frame having the usual sliding sash and with my automatic window screen mounted thereon, the Window being in a partially open position;
Figure 2 is a slightly enlarged vertical sectional view taken upon line 2-2 of Figure 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 3 is a similar enlarged sectional view taken upon line 3-3 of Figure 1, and likewise being enlarged and with parts broken away;
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken through the lower portion of the sash in its closed position with the automatic window screen entirely rolled upon its spring roller.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, there is illustrated the usual form of rectangular window frame having opposite sides III and bottom II with the window sill I2 carried by and forming a part of the bottom of the window frame.
The window sash I3 is vertically slidable in the window frame and provided with oppositely positioned removable retaining strips I4 normally overlying the opposite edges of the sash I3 which is thereby operatively mounted for use in the frame I0 although manually removable at will.
The gist of my invention consists of a screen I5 which may be of fabric or metal or any material desired having the necessary foraminous body structure and with one end of the screen I5 secured to the lower rail I5 as by hold-fast devices I'I passing through a binding I8 permanently attached to one end of the screen I5. The opposite end of the screen I5 is attached to the spring operated roller or barrel Iil whereby the coil spring 29 is mounted within said barrel I9 and automatically rewinds the window screen I5 during the closing of the sash opening 2U. The screen I5 may be made of impregnated weatherproofed material.
The most material feature of the invention is the manner of mounting the automatic roller I9 to the screen I5 upon the window frame Iii and this is accomplished by a pair of attaching brackets 2| secured to the opposite inner faces 22 of the window frame lil.
The mounting brackets 2| are adjustable in height, made possible by the attaching screws 23 passing through the brackets 2| and into the ad jacent face 24 of the window frame III, as best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 oi the drawing. The position of the attaching brackets 2| is regulated when mounting the roller screen I5 upon the window frame I5 and being so arranged that the complete window screen I5 may be accommodated wound upon the spring roller I9, as shown in Figure 4 of the drawing.
An idler roller 25 has end trunnions for revolubly mounting the idler 25 in the brackets 2l with said idler roller 25 in parallelism with spring actuated mounting roller I9.
The complete operation or' the device will be at once apparent from this detailed description thereof, it being understood that with the screen I5 having one end attached to the lower edge or rail of the slidable sash I3, that the opening or the sash I3 pulls upwardly on the screen I5 unwinding the same Irom the spring roller i9 substantially covering the opening 2d of the window frame. Upon closing the sash I6 by lowering the same, the spring 20 of the automatic roller I9 rewinds the screen I5 upon said roller I after the manner of a window shade or other spring mounted automatically operated roller.
It will be apparent that by releasing the set screws 23 for the brackets 2| that the relative positions of the roller I9 and roller 25 may be made to accommodate different forms of window screen as well as to accurately adjust the mounting bracket 2| to accommodate the screen l5 when completely rewound upon the spring roller I9 with the window sash I6 in its lowered closed position.
While the form of the invention herein described and illustrated is believed to be the preferable embodiment of the invention, it will be understood thatv minor' changes can be made in the form proportions and details of construction without departing in any manner from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim: i l
1. In a roller window screen of the character described, a mounting bracket adjustably secured to a side of a window frame adjacent the lower end thereof, a screen roller'and a guide roller for the screen journaledI at one end insaid bracket, the adjustable mounting for said bracket including la'screw;between the endsrthereof about which the bracket may be held to posi-- tion the axis r,of the screen roller at a greater distance from the window 'sill than the maximum radius of the screen Wound on the screen roller.
2. In a roller window screen of the characterdescribed, a mounting bracket adjustably secured to a side of a window frame adjacent the lower end thereof, a screen roller and a guide roller for the screen journaled at one end in said bracket, the bracket comprising a plate having end anges for engaging the adjacent side of a window frame and provide projection space for the journal pins of the screen and guide rollers. 3. In a roller window screen of the character described, a mounting bracket adjustably Secured to a side of a window frame adjacent the lower end thereof, a screen roller and a guide roller for the screen journaled at one end in said bracket, the adjustable mounting for the bracket including a screw between the ends thereof aboutwhich the bracket may be pivoted to position the axis of the screen roller at a greater distance from the window sill than the maximum radius of the screen wound on the screen roller, thebracket comprising a plate having end anges for engaging the adjacent side of the window frame to space the plate from the window frame and provide projection space for the journal pins of ythe screen and guide rollers.
