Description

(Cl. 242-1457) The present invention relates to a tool, and more particularly to a tool adapted for use in guiding a cable or the like upon a winch, drum, or other device. Y
In the handling of steel cable or ber rope for winding the same upon a drum the hands of a person will be injured and, further, the cable cannot be satisfactorily guided by hand upon the drum. been in use becomes frayed, and if drawn through' the hands it will seriously injure them.
It is an object of my invention to provide a guide tool which is of a character that may be Frequently, a cable or rope which has,
easily handled by a person and'which may be manipulated to guide a cable upon a drum or the like without injury to the individual or to the cable.
My invention rin its preferred form comprises a pair of pivotally mounted arm members having a scissor-like action and having guide means at one of the ends of each arm member which are adapted to be placed about a cable and brought into juxtaposition by actuation of the arm members, enabling the operator to control and guide the cable. Preferably, the guide means carried by the ends of the arm members comprise rollers or spools having concave bearing surfaces which when positioned in juxtaposition upon actuation of the arm members snugly receive the cable. Since the arm members are mounted for scissorlike action any projections or frayed portions of cable will pass through the guide elements since the arm members will be forced apart by the defect in the cable.
In power driven Winches or the like considerable speed is imparted to the wire being wound upon the drum of the winch and cannot be guided by hand since the friction between the cable and the hands would severely burn the latter.
Now, in order to acquaint those skilled in the art with the manner of constructing and utilizing my invention, I shall describe in connection with the accompanying drawing certain preferred embodiments of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool of my invention and illustrates its application in guiding a cable upon a power driven winch of a motor vehicle;

lI have shown in Figure l, in dotted line out- I line, a portion of a vehicle having a power driven winch I disposed between a radiator grill Zand a front bumper 3.` The winch is disposed be-V tween the frame rails of the vehicle forwardly thereof and the bumper is provided with a recessed portion 4 through which the cable vextends to the drum 5 of the winch. The power connecf` tion of the winch with the source of power is 'not' shown since this is well understood in the 'art and is not pertinent to an understanding' of my invention.
Referring now to Figures 2 through 4, it will be seen that the tool comprises a pair of straight arm members 6 and I pivotally mounted intermediate their ends at 8. As viewed in the drawing, the upper arm member 6 overlies the lower arm member l, and the arm members are provided with handle portions 9 and I0, respectively, which are adapted to overlie each other when the arm members are positioned as shown in full lines in Figure 2 and in Figure 3. The opposite ends of the arm members 6 and l have rotatable spools or rollers I I and I2, respectively, which are secured to their respective arm members by the pins I3 and I4, respectively. The spacer washer I5 is disposed between the base of the roller I2 and the upper surface of the lower arm l. The spools or rollers Il and I2 are each formed with a concave bearing surface I6 and in the preferred form of the invention the concavity is substantially semi-circular. vBy providing the spacer washer I5 both rollers II and I2 may be made identical, simplifying the machining of parts and making the tool.
Now, when it is desired to wind the cable I8 upon the drum 5 of the power driven winch I, the handles of the arm members 6 and 'I are grasped one in each hand and extended to the dotted line position shown in Figure 2. The rollers or spools II and I2 are then disposed one on each side of the cable, and the arm members are then actuated to the full line position shown in Figures 1 and 2. It will thus be seen that the cable is conned between the concave bearing surfaces I6 of the spools and the operator may conveniently guide the cable upon the drum. After the cable has been wound upon the drum the tool may be removed by disposing the handle in the dotted line position shown in Figure 2.
Referring now to Figure 5, I have shown a modified form of the invention in which the arms 6 and I comprise offset end portions I9 and 20, respectively. The rollers 2| and 22 are identical to the previously described rollers or spools I I and I2 and are mounted, one each, to each opposite offset end portion ofthe arm members by means of the pins 23`andl 24.. The remainder of the tool of Figure 5 is identical to that described in connection with Figures l through 4, and when the arm members and 'I' are disposed in their closed position, the rollers 2| and 22 are disposed in juxtaposition to provide a guide for a cable or the like. It will be seen` in the latter embodiment of my invention by providing the arm members B and I with the oppositely disposed offset portions the use of a spacer Washer or the like is not necessary, and further the force imparted to the tool by the cable being guided upon the drum Will be equally distributed to the two arm members.
' I claim: l. A tool comprising aI pair of arm members of diierent lengths pivotally mounted intermediate their ends, said arm members having handle portions at corresponding ends and to one sidel of the pivotal mounting thereof with the opposite end of onejof said arm members extending beyo-nd the opposite end of the other arm member, and guide spools rotatably mounted in the opposite ends of said arm members, said guide spools having concave bearing surfaces adapted to be disposed in juxtaposition for guiding a cable or the like.
2'. A tool comprising a' pair of arm members of different lengths pivotally mounted intermediate their ends, said arm members having handle portions at corresponding ends and to one side of the pivotal mounting thereof with the opposite end of one of said arm members extending beyond the opposite end of the other arm member, guide spools rotatably mounted in the opposite ends of said arm members and adapted to be disposed in juxtaposition by actuation of said arm members.

A tool comprising a pair ofl straight arm members of different lengths, .eachv having a handle portion at one end thereof, means for pivotally mounting said arms together intermediate their ends With the handle portions to one side of the pivotal mounting and arranged so that the handle portions may be disposed in overlying relation, and guide spools having concave bearing. surfaces, one each being rotatably mounted on the ends of each of said arm members opposite the handle portions thereof, said guide spools being adapted to be disposed in juxtaposition When said handle portions overlie each other.

A tool comprising a pair of arm members of different' lengths having offset portions at one of the ends of each thereof, said arm members having handle porti-ons at theirother ends, means for pivotally mounting said arm members together intermediate their ends and arranged so that the handle portions of said arm members may be dis-y posed in overlying relation, said arm members being pivotal'ly mounted together so that their offset portions are disposed' in opposed relation, and spools having concave bearing surfaces, one each being rotatably mounted in the offset por"- ti'ons of each of saidl arm members and adapted to be disposed in juxtaposition when said handles overlie each other.
